There has been an avalanche of renewed critical attention to Robert Lowell since the publication last month of his 1,186 page Collected Poems The New York Times Robert left Harvard after two years, transferring to Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, to study the Classics with John Crowe Ransom and fall under the austere spell of the New Critics. There he began lifelong friendships with poet Randall Jarrell and novelist Peter Taylor. Lowell moved on to graduate work at Louisiana State University, where he enjoyed the tutelage of Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren. With his new wife, the writer Jean Stafford, he shared a house in Monteagle, Tennessee, with Allen Tate and his wife, the writer Caroline Gordon.

Note: This page offers an introduction to Robert Lowell, the text of his poem "For the Union Dead", a discussion of this poem, some links to the web and a bibliography. These sections were taken from a (larger) bibliographical exercise for a course in 20th-century American Literature taught by Professor Vik Doyen . I worked on that assignment together with Ingrid Gillespie. The text on the author is co-authored by her.

1 Author Robert Lowell was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1917 into an historical family. His mother was a descendant of the first woman to step off the Mayflower. His other relatives included the likes of James Russell Lowell and Amy Lowell. Indeed, both the past and his private family situations would later be sources of inspiration for his writing. He was educated at a very wealthy private school, spent two years at Harvard, and graduated summa cum laude (degree in Classics, 1940) from Kenyon College in Ohio, where he met such writers as Randall Jarrell and the New Critic John Crowe Ransom. He was married to three writers, with a daughter from the second marriage, and a son from the third. Lowell attempted to enlist upon the U.S. declaring war in 1941, but was rejected on the grounds of physical unfitness. By the time he was drafted, he had changed his mind and was imprisoned for 5 months as a conscientious objector. He had converted to Roman Catholicism but later became agnostic. His early collections

Robert Lowell Biography
Robert Lowell (1917-1977)

Robert Lowell was born in Boston, Massachusetts to a distinguished family; his ancestors include poets James Russell Lowell and Amy Lowell. Following his family's expectations, he attended Harvard University, but under the advice of the psychiatrist who treated him for the first of many breakdowns and manic episodes, transferred to Kenyon College. There he studied with poet John Crowe Ransom...and met lifelong friends and literary mentors Peter Taylor and Randall Jarrell. After graduation from Kenyon, Lowell moved to Louisiana State University, where he worked with New Critics Robert Penn Warren and Cleanth Brooks. He was imprisoned as a conscientious objector during World War II, and his fiercely held Catholicism was central in his early, often oracular and opaque poetry. In the late 1950s he began writing in an autobiographical strain. The publication of Life Studies (1959) [in which appeared "For the Union Dead"] heralded his much freer prosody, as well as what would be called the confessional school f poetry....At the time of his sudden death in a taxi, he was returning to his second wife, Elizabeth Hardwick, after breaking with his third, Lady Caroline Blackwood.

Midcentury American great
Hugely prolific poet presents a challenge to his editors
By ROBERT PHILLIPS
COLLECTED POEMS. By Robert Lowell. Edited by Frank Bidart and David Gewanter with editorial assistance by DeSales Harrison. When Robert Frost died in 1963, critics were determined to pinpoint another Great American Poet. Robert Lowell emerged from the pack as Frost's successor. His breakthrough collection, Life Studies , had appeared in 1959 and won the National Book Award. An earlier collection, Lord Weary's Castle , had received the Pulitzer Prize. He replaced Frost in the American Academy of Arts and Letters. By my count 43 critical studies and biographies of Lowell have appeared to date.
This edition of Lowell's Collected Poems shows the critics were not wrong. First, there's the matter of Lowell's great productivity. The collection weighs in at nearly 1,200 pages and that's with the designer sometimes putting four poems on two facing pages. (When James Merrill's
