Declaration of Personal Responsibility
Orders for my induction into the armed forces on September eighth 1943 have just arrived. Because we glory in the conviction that our wars are won not by irrational valor but through the exercise of moral responsibility, it is fitting for me to make the following declaration which is also a decision.
Like the majority of our people I watched the approach of the war with foreboding. Modern wars have proved subversive to the Democracies and history had shown them to be the iron gates to totalitarian slavery. On the other hand, members of my family had served in all our wars since the Declaration of Independence. I thought—our tradition of service is sensible and noble; if its occasional exploitation by Money, Politics and Imperialism is allowed to seriously discredit it, we are doomed.
When Pearl Harbor was attacked, I imagined that my country was in intense peril and come what might, unprecedented sacrifices were necessary for our national survival. In March and August of 1942 I volunteered, first for the Navy and then for the Army. And when I heard reports of what would formerly have been termed atrocities, I was not disturbed: for I judged that savagery was unavoidable in our nationÂ’s struggle for its life against diabolic adversaries.

Robert Lowell Papers
Scope and Contents
The Robert Lowell Papers, ca. 1845-1988, consist mainly of Lowell's working papers for the period 1970-1977. As such the papers include heavily revised drafts of manuscripts, galleys, and page proofs for NOTEBOOK (1970), THE DOLPHIN (1973), FOR LIZZIE AND HARRIET (1973), HISTORY (1973), and DAY BY DAY (1977). Also present are an early notebook, manuscripts for a few earlier works such as "Endecott and the Red Cross" (1965) and "Prometheus Bound" (1969), manuscripts for works published posthumously such as THE ORESTEIA OF AESCHYLUS (1978) and COLLECTED PROSE (1987), as well as some unfinished and/or unpublished items. The balance of the collection contains manuscripts by friends, colleagues, and students, as well as correspondence, clippings, financial and legal papers, honorary degrees, medical papers, music scores, photographs, school publications and yearbooks, and sound recordings. The bulk of this collection was acquired in 1982 and came in two large suitcases, largely unorganized and unlabelled. Lowell was frequently assisted by the poet Frank Bidart during the 1970s, who was consulted for advice regarding the organization and arrangement of manuscripts in this collection. The collection has been arranged into four series: I. Works, ca. 1930s-1987 (14 boxes), II. Correspondence, 1938-1977 (2 boxes), III. Personal Papers, 1845-1988 (5 boxes), and IV. Sound Recordings and Music Scores, 1958-1987 (19 items). The papers serve to document various aspects of Robert Lowell's life, chiefly his activities as poet, translator, and playwright, especially during the last seven years of his life. His working practices as a poet, his propensity for revision, and his evolving style during this later period are especially well represented in his manuscripts. His correspondence from colleagues and friends deals in part with his divorce from Elizabeth Hardwick and subsequent marriage to Caroline Blackwood, and his controversial treatment of these events in his poetry. Among Lowell's correspondents in this collection are William Alfred, Rolando Anzilotti, Frank Bidart, Elizabeth Bishop, Caroline Blackwood, Blair Clark, Elizabeth Hardwick, Stanley Kunitz, Harriet Winslow Lowell, Eugene J. McCarthy, Mary McCarthy, William Meredith, Marcia Nardi, Adrienne Cecile Rich, I. A. Richards, W. D. Snodgrass, Jean Stafford, Allen Tate, Peter Hillsman Taylor, Robert Penn Warren, and others.

Collected Poems
Reviewer: David McCooey May 1, 2004 Print this article Email to a friend Robert Lowell fashioned a poetic career disconcertingly intertwined with his life. Collected Poems By Robert Lowell; By the time of his death at 60, Robert Lowell had fashioned a poetic career that was disconcertingly intertwined with his life. He had married three times, suffered from mental illness (for which he was regularly in hospital) and detailed these events in his poetry. The cost of this interconnection between life and work is referred to at the end of his controversial work, The Dolphin (1973): "I have sat and listened to too many / words of the collaborating muse, / and plotted too freely with my life, / not avoiding injury to others, / not avoiding injury to myself." The link between self-injury and injury to others may have been learnt from Lowell's parents, whose icy, genteel antagonism is brilliantly presented in Life Studies (1959), the book seen as instigating the "confessional verse" movement, whose practitioners included Lowell's student, Sylvia Plath. In Life Studies, Lowell presents his childhood, family history and his struggle with marriage and mental illness as legitimate sources of highly artful poetry.

Robert Traill Spence Lowell:
The Relief of Lucknow
On, that last day in Lucknow fort!
We knew that it was the last;
That the enemy's lines crept surely on,
And the end was coming fast. To yield to that foe meant worse than death;
And the men and we all worked on;
It was one day more of smoke and roar,
And then it would all be done. There was one of us, a corporal's wife,
A fair, young, gentle thing,
Wasted with fever in the siege, And her mind was wandering. She lay on the ground, in her Scottish plaid, And I took her head on my knee; "When my father comes hame frae the pleugh," she said, "Oh, then please waken me." She slept like a child on her father's floor, In the flecking of woodbine shade, When the house-dog sprawls by the open door, And the mother's wheel is stayed. It was smoke and roar and powder-stench, And hopeless waiting for death;

Robert Lowell
Of the many poets writing in the United States in recent years one of the most outstanding was Robert Lowell. Related as he was to such earlier American poets as Amy Lowell and James Russell Lowell, Robert Lowell came by his interest in poetry naturally. His first book of poems, Land of Unlikeness , was published in 1944. From this volume he selected the best poems, which he reworked and published as Lord Weary's Castle . This collection won the Pulitzer Prize in 1946. Other volumes of his poetry are: The Mills of the Kavanaughs Life Studies (1959), and For the Union Dead (1964). Lowell taught at a number of schools, including Kenyon College, Boston University, and Harvard. Lowell's earlier poems, especially those that appeared in Lord Weary's Castle , represented an involvement with the traditions of the poets of the generation of T.S. Eliot and Allen Tate. However, in both subject matter and language, his later poems seem a departure from these traditions and assume a more contemporary posture. Because of his early traditional approach and later divergence, Lowell was one of the most transitional of contemporary American poets. Perhaps the chief characteristic of Lowell's poetry is its vitality. He never overelaborates about a feeling or thought just so that it will fill a poem, but instead packs the lines he writes with exuberant energy. Sometimes he may prove difficult to understand, yet he is not one who loves obscurity for its own sake. His rhyme and rhythm are regular, and the beat of his verses is strong; we can feel the pulse in them. When one of his rhymes is off or a rhythm is wrenched, it is for a poetic purpose.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Lowell's poetry is more difficult than readers expect, deceptively difficult. Since many students come to him expecting an accessible poet (after all, he's one of those "confessionals"), they sometimes resent having to mine his poems for the background and the allusive sources they contain. Attention to an explicative preparation usually helps. "New Critical" methods are very appropriate.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
The combination of the historical with the personal is one of Lowell's most pervasive themes. His illustrious and prominent family (the Lowells) created a burden for both his psyche and his art. The reader must know history to read Lowell. The human mind in search, moving with intuitive understanding (as opposed to a reliance on fact), sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, is Lowell's continuing theme.
Significant Form, Style, or Artistic Conventions
A range of forms must be studiedLowell is the most formal of poets, even toward the end, with the so-called "notebooks." Studying his intense revision (hardly a word left unchanged from the original version to the final) and examining his effort to skew natural language into his highly concentrated form are both good approaches.

His later work indicates a philosophic acceptance of life and the world. His Life Studies (1959) is a frank and highly autobiographical volume in verse and prose, one of the first and most influential works of what is widely called "confessional" poetry. Lowell often used his life as raw material for his verse, writing, for instance, of his family, his relationships with his wives, and his frequent bouts of depression and madness.
