FOUNDING THE NEW YORK REVIEW: Two Letters from Robert Lowell to Elizabeth Bishop
By Robert Lowell
This statement appeared in the first issue of The New York Review , February 1, 1963. To the Reader: The New York Review of Books presents reviews of some of the more interesting and important books published this winter. It does not, however, seek merely to fill the gap created by the printers' strike in New York City but to take the opportunity which the strike has presented to publish the sort of literary journal which the editors and contributors feel is needed in America. This issue of The New York Review does not pretend to cover all the books of the season or even all the important ones. Neither time nor space, however, have been spent on books which are trivial in their intentions or venal in their effects, except occasionally to reduce a temporarily inflated reputation or to call attention to a fraud. The contributors have supplied their reviews to this issue on short notice and without the expectation of payment: the editors have volunteered their time and, since the project was undertaken entirely without capital, the publishers, through the purchase of advertising, have made it possible to pay the printer. The hope of the editors is to suggest, however imperfectly, some of the qualities which a responsible literary journal should have and to discover whether there is, in America, not only the need for such a review but the demand for one. Readers are invited to submit their comments to

Lowell was barely published at this point, but because he came from a venerated Boston family the event made headline news. He would later turn the jail time into "Memories of West Street and Lepke," a centerpiece poem in Life Studies , the 1959 collection regarded by many as the most important book of American poetry in the second half of the twentieth century. top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR Collected Poems by Robert Lowell, Frank Bidart (Editor), David Gewanter (Editor)

Robert Lowell: Biographical Note Lowell graduated summa cum laude in Classics from Kenyon in 1940. He spent the next year studying with Cleanth Brooks and Robert Penn Warren at Louisiana State University. Before departing for Louisiana, Lowell married Jean Stafford, a writer of short stories and novels. 1940 also saw Lowell's conversion to Roman Catholicism, a repudiation of his ancestors' New England Protestantism as well as a dedication to what seemed to him the more authentic faith of the Roman Church. After a year at Louisiana State, Lowell and Stafford moved to Monteagle, Tennessee, where they shared a house with Allen Tate and his wife, the writer Caroline Gordon. When the Second World War began in 1941, Lowell had volunteered for military service. His poor eyesight led to his initial rejection from armed service. In 1943, however, Lowell received a conscription notice from the United States military. Shocked and dismayed by the Allied firebombing of civilians in German cities like Dresden, he declared himself at this time a conscientious objector. He served for several months in jail (his experiences form the basis of "Memories of West Street and Lepke"), and finished his sentence performing community service in Connecticut. During these months, he finished and published his first book, Land of Unlikeness . During the next year he revised the book and published the new version as Lord Weary's Castle in 1946. This book found a warm critical reception, sparked in part by Jarrell's appreciative review in

His works include Life Studies (1959), and For the Union Dead (1964). Much of his poetry is confessional. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, during World War II Lowell was imprisoned for five months for conscientious objection. Several of his poems, notably Memories of West Street and Lepke (1956), reflect on this experience. Skunk Hour (1957), included in the acclaimed volume Life Studies (1959), is another example of his autobiographical poetry. In the 1960s he was again a war protester and civil-rights activist. Other works include Land of Unlikeness The Mills of the Kaanaughs The Old Glory Near the Ocean Notebook The Dolphin (1973, Pulitzer Prize), and

Relinquunt Omnia Servare Rem Publicam.
The old South Boston Aquarium stands
in a Sahara of snow now. Its broken windows are boarded.
The bronze weathervane cod has lost half its scales.
The airy tanks are dry.
Once my nose crawled like a snail on the glass;
my hand tingled
to burst the bubbles
drifting from the noses of the cowed, compliant fish.
My hand draws back. I often sigh still
for the dark downward and vegetating kingdom of the fish and reptile. One morning last March, I pressed against the new barbed and galvanized fence on the Boston Common. Behind their cage, yellow dinosaur steamshovels were grunting as they cropped up tons of mush and grass to gouge their underworld garage. Parking spaces luxuriate like civic sandpiles in the heart of Boston. A girdle of orange, Puritan-pumpkin colored girders braces the tingling Statehouse, shaking over the excavations, as it faces Colonel Shaw and his bell-cheeked Negro infantry on St. Gaudens' shaking Civil War relief, propped by a plank splint against the garage's earthquake. Two months after marching through Boston

My Favorite Poet For the Union Dead validates Lowell's decision to declare poetry his mode of expression. Poems such as the dolorous My Last Evening with Uncle Devereaux Winslow and Terminal Days at Beverly Farm expose a man groping for hope after the deaths of close relatives; Waking in the Blue and Myopia: A night explore, respectively, Lowell's mental illness and attendant three month hospitalization, and a night of insomnia that becomes a maelstrom of tortured reflections and half-hewn thoughts; The Drinker explores alcoholism as a product of foiled love, with a question as to whether pathology or sheer carelessness and love of idleness is the underlying shibboleth. Water, the poem that stoked my love for Lowell, uses a maritime theme to express sorrow over a lost love. Beyond the Alps, from Life Studies, is reprised here with an elided stanza reinserted at the behest of coeval John Berryman. Lowell is one of those poets so gifted, so erudite, so steeped in classical literature, it's hard to grasp that, as he explains it, he was "less rather than more bookish than most children." Much of the isolation evinced in Lowell's poetry, as well as the restlessness of his life, both as youth and adult, are radiantly eviscerated in these two collections.

40. Robert Lowell’s Beautiful Nihilism
Art by Duncan Hannah. TRES REVIEW. CONTRIBUTORS. robert lowell’s Beautiful Nihilism by Jack Anders. cover. robert lowell’s poems are like a wheel.
http://www.mipoesias.com/April2004/tres1lowell.htm
Volume 16 ~ Spring 2004 ~ ISSN 1543-6063 Art by Duncan Hannah TRES REVIEW CONTRIBUTORS Robert Lowell’s Beautiful Nihilism
by Jack Anders L
owell is an interesting case because he enjoyed massive critical success and institutional validation during his life. He also came out of a relatively privileged and well-monied background and took full advantage of that. Because of his family’s name, wealth and connections he was able to receive an excellent education. Also, when he began the movement into more explicitly autobiographical poems in Life Studies He is a very interesting poet because even though he was publicly successful and never had to really deal with severe isolation or poverty, he nonetheless was powerfully subversive in his language and in that respect compares favorably with marginalized and underground poets of the time. Lowell's Collected Poems show us what a hard-working obsessive writer he was. The collection is nearly 1,200 pages long. And yet there is something almost monotonously continuous from poem to poem throughout the entire book, in terms of tone. Robert Lowell’s poems are like a wheel. On the rising and ascendant side of the wheel is his intricate and very physical verbal music, tied into an imagistic sense similar to his good friend Elizabeth Bishop’s. On the falling and voiding side are his themes and meanings, the “what does it mean” of his poems, always dropping down into the negative and the depressed. Yet over on the other side, you can see the musical imagery of his poems lifting them back up.
