The world right now thinks that going to Mars is same as going to the moon, just that going to Mars takes a little longer time and a little more dedication. Now according to our research, we found out that Mars exploration is anything but that. We want to teach the people what Mars exploration is really about and what we need to expect in order to reach Mars. Lowell, Percival (1855-1916)
Born into a wealthy and well-known Bostonian family, Lowell gave no early indication of the obsession that would come to dominate his life and create an enduring romance involving extraterrestrial canals (see Mars, canals of ) and an advanced Martian civilization (see Mars, life on ). At Harvard, where for 24 years his brother was president, he showed a talent for mathematics and even presented an astronomical address entitled "The Nebular Hypothesis". But following his graduation, he devoted the next 17 years to family business concerns and three extended stays in the Orient. He served as Foreign Secretary and Counselor to the first Korean diplomatic mission and, during his time in Korea and Japan, wrote four books on Eastern thought and culture. Then, for some reason which is not entirely clear, he caught the Mars bug. Perhaps he had been inspired by reading Flammarion 's popular treatise on the planet. Or, it may have been

Lowell, Percival Lowell, Percival, , American astronomer, b. Boston, grad. Harvard, 1876; brother of Abbott Lawrence Lowell and Amy Lowell. He visited Korea and Japan, where he acted as counselor and foreign secretary to the Korean Special Mission to the United States and wrote several books about East Asia. Becoming interested in astronomy, he established (1894) the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Ariz., and devoted himself to making personal observations. It was his belief that Mars was inhabited and that the striations on the Martian surface were artificial waterways. He also contended that there was a planet beyond Neptune (confirmed in 1930 by the discovery of Pluto). From 1902 he was nonresident professor of astronomy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among his many writings on astronomy are Mars and Its Canals (1906) and The Genesis of Planets See biography by A. L. Lowell (1935).

Lowell, Percival
US astronomer who predicted the existence of a planet beyond Neptune, starting the search that led to the discovery of Pluto 1930. In 1894 he founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he reported seeing 'canals' (now known to be optical effects and natural formations) on the surface of Mars.
Lowell was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and studied mathematics at Harvard. He spent 16 years in business and diplomacy, mainly in the Far East, before taking up astronomy, becoming professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1902.
Influenced strongly by the work of Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli, Lowell set up his observatory at Flagstaff originally with the sole intention of confirming the presence of advanced life forms on Mars. He thought he could make out a complex and regular network of canals and regular seasonal variations that to him indicated agricultural activity. He led an expedition to the Chilean Andes in 1907 which produced the first high-quality photographs of the planet.

Related links of interest: American astronomer and writer, 1855-1916. A member of the distinguished Lowell family of Massachusetts; brother of poet Amy Lowell and Harvard University president Abbott Lowell. Lowell predicted the existence of the planet Pluto and initiated the search that ended in its discovery. During the period 188393 he devoted himself to literature and travel, much of the time in the Far East, which he described in Chos¶n (1886), The Soul of the Far East (1888), Noto (1891), and Occult Japan (1895). In the 1890s, inspired by the report of canals on Mars, Lowell decided to study the planet. He championed the theory that intelligent Martians constructed a planet-wide system of irrigation. Lowell published his views in three books: Mars (1895), Mars and Its Canals (1906), and Mars As the Abode of Life (1908). Help build the largest human-edited directory on the web.

Thorough and Revealing Strauss is not content with telling us the story of Lowell's fascinating lifehe portrays each milieu in which Lowell worked and lived with a complexity that gives us the tools to understand Lowell in context. For example, he gives us piquant details about life in the upper reaches of Boston Brahmin culture. One of the more interesting stories is Lowell's move from prominence in academia to the position of crank and critic of the increasing professionalization of astronomy. This is the portrait of a restless mind, worth delving into. Lowell in Context The first fully satisfying biography of a man who helped to change astronomy, sustained its popularity and mystery, and tested the wills of mainstream astronomers. Surprisingly easy read!!

LOWELL, PERCIVAL (1855 - 1916), American astronomer, was born at Boston, Mass.. March 13. 1855 He Graduated from Harvard in 1876 and then engaged in business. He began to specialize in astronomy in 1894 and established the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Ariz., for the purpose of exhaustive planetary research. He was particularly interested in observing Mars and wrote books such as Mars us the Abode of Life (1908), urging that the Martian canals represented vegetation along artificial waterways. Later the canals were photographed. Lowell became the leading authority on Mars, and maintained that all evidence pointed to the existence of life on Mars. He assiduously observed Mercury and Venus, but his greatest contribution was the announcement of a probable trans-Neptunian planet. Lowell and W. H. Pickering , working independently, predicted the position of this planet, which in 1930 was announced as Pluto. He died at Flagstaff, Ariz., Nov. 12, l916.
