Encyclopedia

Lowell, Amy Lowell, Amy, , American poet, biographer, and critic, b. Brookline, Mass., privately educated; sister of Percival Lowell and Abbott Lawrence Lowell. In 1912 she published A Dome of Many-Colored Glass, a volume of conventional verse. The next year she went to England, where she met Ezra Pound and became identified with the imagists . After Pound abandoned the group, she became its leader and champion, publishing a three-volume anthology entitled Some Imagist Poets (1915, 1916, 1917). Lowell's own poetry is particularly notable for its rendering of sensuous images. Her experiments with polyphonic prose, a free-verse form that combines prose and poetry, are considered unsuccessful. Among her volumes of poetry are Sword Blades and Poppy Seed Men, Women, and Ghosts Can Grande's Castle What's o'Clock (1925; Pulitzer Prize), East Wind (1926), and Ballads for Sale Six French Poets (1915) and Tendencies in Modern American Poetry (1917). Her most ambitious work is her two-volume biography of Keats (1925). See biographies by H. Gregory (1958) and S. F. Damon (1935, repr. 1966).

This lead me to read quite a few other poems of hers in a number of her books, and the whole of "Pictures of a Floating World." Although there are many poems that are not very innovative or specifically charming, it is worth the read to discover her brilliance in so many of her poems. The imagist poetry movement of the early 1900's is often overlooked if one is not an extremely avid fan of it, but what a beautiful thing it is when Lowell writes at her best. Her poetry is straight forward, beautiful, loving, "poetic"(ha, ha), tender and emotional, amusing at times, and it, not surprisingly, creates beautiful images in ones mind. Lowell's life is just as interesting as her poetry, and it should be looked in to as well, to gain a better understanding and appreciation for her poetry. Enjoy! Pictures of the Floating World I first came across Amy Lowell in high school in the early '70s. I first read Fir-Flower Tablets which first introduced me to the Chinese poet Li Po. I was enchanted with Pictures of the Floating World and I have spent a good deal of my time collecting her work by haunting bookstores. As a poet myself Amy Lowell was in many ways an influence in my work along with Ovid and Catullus. I am really big fan of hers although I do know that she does not rate with the likes of Emily Dickinson for example or some others. But I like her.

Amy Medina age: born: Lowell, Massachusetts neighborhood: Pawtucketville Audio languages: English, Portuguese, college-level Spanish Video Early Days I was born in Lowell at the "hospital on the hill" as my family likes to call it. My parents and their families settled here from the Azores, nine islands off the coast of mainland Portugal. I lived upstairs from my dad’s parents; I was their first granddaughter, so I got spoiled a lot. My family lived off of Gorham Street near a small waterfall. School was within walking distance so every morning and every afternoon, my mom and I or my grandfather and I would walk to school past this waterfall. Family Education Presently I am currently working at a non-profit organization, the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers, with ACCEPT, an after school program for Portuguese speaking eighth grade students from the Rogers School. For some extra hours and income, I teach the basic computer and Internet for Portuguese speaking people at MAPS. I also help my uncle at his convenience store when he needs help; and I baby-sit for two families in my neighborhood as well as my five little cousins. Her family was Episcopalian, of old New England stock, and at the top of Boston society. Lowell was the youngest of five children. Her elder brother Abbott Lawrence, a freshman at Harvard at the time of her birth, went on to become president of Harvard College. As a young girl she was first tutored at home, then attended private schools in Boston, during which time she made several trips to Europe with her family. At seventeen she secluded herself in the 7,000-book library at Sevenals to study literature. Lowell was encouraged to write from an early age. In 1887 she, with her mother and sister, wrote Dream Drops or Stories From Fairy Land by a Dreamer, printed privately by the Boston firm Cupples and Hurd. Her poem "Fixed Idea" was published in 1910 by the Atlantic Monthly, after which Lowell published individual poems in various journals. In October of 1912 Houghton Mifflin published her first collection, A Dome of Many Colored Glass Lowell, a vivacious and outspoken businesswoman, tended to excite controversy.
