To Lucasta, Going beyond the Seas Richard Lovelace
IF to be absent were to be Away from thee; Or that when I am gone, You or I were alone; Then my Lucasta might I crave Pity from blustring winde, or swallowing wave. But I'le not sigh one blast or gale To swell my saile, Or pay a teare to swage The foaming blew-Gods rage; For whether he will let me passe Or no, I'm still as happy as I was. Though Seas and Land be 'twixt us both

Born: Circa 1618, in Woolwich, England or the Netherlands
Died: Circa 1657, in London, England
Richard Lovelace was an English poet and soldier. As a poet, the quality of his work ranges from brilliant to pleasant, and is considered one of the greater Cavalier poets. As a Royalist soldier, he donated all of his available funds to the cause.
He may have been born in the Netherlands where his father was serving in the military. His education took place at the University of Oxford. Lovelace was heir to a great estate at Kent. At about the age of sixteen, he wrote a comedy, which was entitled The Scholar. Unfortunately, only the prologue and epilogue are in existence today. He took part in expeditions to Scotland during the rebellions against Charles I between 1639 and 1640. In 1642, Lovelace was imprisoned in the Gatehouse in London. While in the Gatehouse, he wrote To Althea from Prison which contains the famous lines, "Stone walls do not a prison make/Nor iron bars a cage." He also wrote To Lucasta, Going to the Wars while detained.

RICHARD LOVELACE

Deux vers célèbres parlent de la suprématie de l'esprit sur la matière: " Stone walls do not a prison make, Nor iron bars a cage", " Les murs de pierre ne font pas une prison, ni les barreaux de fer une cage". En voici le texte original:
When Love with unconfined wing
Hovers within my gates,
And my divine Althea brings
To whisper at the grates;
When I lie tangled in her hair,
And fetter'd to her eye,
The gods, that wanton in the air,
Know no such liberty.
When flowing cups run swiftly round
With no allaying Thames,
Our careless heads with roses bound,
Our hearts with loyal flames; When thirsty grief in wine we steep, When healths and draughts go free, Fishes, that tipple in the deep, Know no such liberty. When (like committed linnets) I With shriller throat shall sing The sweetness, mercy, majesty, And glories of my king;

LEGIE. Great son of Mars, and of Minerva too!
With what oblations must we come to woo
Thy sacred soul to look down from above,
And see how much thy memory we love,
Whose happy pen so pleased amorous ears,
And, lifting bright LUCASTA to the sphears,
Her in the star-bespangled orb did set
Above fair Ariadnes coronet,
Leaving a pattern to succeeding wits,
By which to sing forth their Pythonick fits.
Shall we bring tears and sighs? no, no! then we Should but bemone our selves for loosing thee, Or else thy happiness seem to deny, Or to repine at thy felicity. Then, whilst we chant out thine immortal praise, Our offerings shall be onely sprigs of bays; And if our tears will needs their brinks out-fly, We'l weep them forth into an elegy, To tell the world, how deep fates wounded wit, When Atropos the lovely Lovelace hit! How th' active fire, which cloath'd thy gen'rous mind, Consum'd the water, and the earth calcin'd

95. Richard Lovelace Heroic Couplet Love And Honor
richard lovelace 16181658. Lucasta (1649). I could not love thee, dear, so much,.Loved I not honor more. I first heard this quote when I was in high school.
http://www.xenodochy.org/ex/quotes/lovelace.html
Richard Lovelace
Lucasta
I could not love thee, dear, so much,
Loved I not honor more.
To Lucasta , which contains the couplet. Imagine my horror to discover that Lovelace's "honor" meant something like glory on the battlefield - the honor attributed to a returning and triumphant warrior, and not what I originally took it to mean at all. He's leaving her to go off to war. What a let-down. To me, it meant that my love could be greater by virtue of the self-imposed restrictions that drew the line at any kind of selfishness or possessive or other behavior that was less than honorable (as I understood it). Love without honor, as I understood it, was something less than ideal or perfect love. Possessiveness? - destructive and selfish. Jealousy? - destructive and again selfish. Neither respects the object of these emotions. Love must be selfless, respectful, non-possessive, without jealousy, honest, and, above all, support one's duty. The couplet had said it so well for me.
