for personal use only is hereby granted by Del Rey Books. "The Statement of Randolph Carter" Once more I say that I have no clear idea of our object on that night. Certainly, it had much to do with something in the book which Warren carried with himthat ancient book in undecipherable characters which had come to him from India a month beforebut I swear I do not know what it was that we expected to find. Your witness says he saw us at half past 11 on the Gainsville pike, headed for Big Cypress Swamp. This is probably true, but I have no distinct memory of it. The picture seared into my soul is of one scene only, and the hour must have been long after midnight; for a waning crescent moon was high in the vaporous heavens. The place was an ancient cemetery; so ancient that I trembled at the manifold signs of immemorial years. It was in a deep, damp hollow, overgrown with rank grass, moss, and curious creeping weeds, and filled with a vague stench which my idle fancy associated absurdly with rotting stone. On every hand were the signs of neglect and decrepitude, and I seemed haunted by the notion that Warren and I were the first living creatures to invade a lethal silence of centuries. Over the valley's rim a wan, waning crescent moon peered through the noisome vapors that seemed to emanate from unheard of catacombs, and by its feeble, wavering beams I could distinguish a repellent array of antique slabs, urns, cenotaphs, and mausoleum facades; all crumbling, moss-grown, and moisture-stained, and partly concealed by the gross luxuriance of the unhealthy vegetation.

The author's comparison two American authors of supernatural horror and fantasy.

Poe
Lovecraft by
Robert Bloch
[Reprinted from Ambrosia No. 2 (Aug. 1973)]
Comparisons between Edgar Allan Poe and Howard Phillips Lovecraft are, I suppose, inevitable; seemingly, in recent years [writing in 1973] they are also interminable.
I shall not, therefore, repeat the usual recital of similarities to be found within their work there will be no mention of black cats, revenants , or Antarctic settings per se
But at the same time I have no intention of making a calculated bid for attention by deliberately asserting, as some have also declared, that no real resemblance exists aside from superficial employment of stock characters and themes common to virtually all stories in the genre
To me, this is an untenable statement: Lovecraft, like every writer of fantasy and horror fiction subsequent to Poe, was necessarily influenced by the work of his predecessor and to certain extent his work needs must be derivative in some slight sense. Actually, Lovecraft's homage to Poe in his essay Supernatural Horror In Literature , indicates a degree of appreciation and admiration which leaves no doubt as to the profound impression made upon him by the earlier master.

Date and Place of birth:
b. Aug. 20, 1890, Providence, Rhode Island, U.S. d. March 15, 1937, Providence, Rhode Island, U.S. Life and Works:
American poet and author of macabre short novels. Necronomicon Iliad and Odyssey . But Lovecraft had by this time already discovered weird fiction, and his interest in the weird was fostered by his grandfather, who entertained Lovecraft with off-the-cuff weird tales in the Gothic mode. Lovecraft grew up as a fringe member of the conservative New England aristocracy, and was educated at local schools. He was somewhat lonely and suffered from frequent illnesses, many of them apparently psychological. His attendance at the Slater Avenue School was sporadic, and he was often kept away from school by his overprotective mother, but Lovecraft was soaking up much information through independent reading. At about the age of eight he discovered science, first chemistry, then astronomy. During this time he found the works of Edgar Allan Poe , who had visited several times the library in Province, and whose model inspired Lovecraft in his literary aspirations. He also read works by

HOWARD PHILLIPS LOVECRAFT ®ivotopis a prùvodce Necronomiconem
Celý svùj ¾ivot trpìl rùznými nemocemi, bolestmi hlavy, nervozitou, únavou (projevující se bìhem jeho ¹kolní docházky) a nakonec i nervovým zhroucením, díky jemu¾ nepostoupil ze støední ¹koly na universitu. Za své samoucky získanévzdìlání mohl dìkovat pøedev¹ím rozsáhlé knihovnì svého dìdeèka Whippleho Phillipse, èasto své pøátele ohromoval svými rozsáhlými vìdomostmi a dobrou pamìtí.

LINER NOTES FOR HP lovecraft S HP lovecraft/HP lovecraft II Most of the songs on HP lovecraft, however, were not originals, but folkrock covers.

LINER NOTES FOR H.P. LOVECRAFT'S H.P. LOVECRAFT/H.P. LOVECRAFT II By Richie Unterberger Like the stories of the author after whom they were named, H.P. Lovecraftís music was spooky and mysterious, a vibe well-suited for the psychedelic times when their two albums were released in 1967 and 1968. Their remarkably eclectic balance of folk, jazz, orchestrated pop, and even bits of garage rock and classical music, was too fragile and ethereal to keep afloat for any longer than that, perhaps. It lasted long enough, however, for the group to gift us with two uneven, occasionally brilliant albums that are among the most intriguing obscure relics of the psychedelic age. The bandís none-too-stable personnel were about as diverse as could be in the milieu of 1967 Chicago, not a city known for hatching top-flight psychedelic outfits. Guitarist George Edwards, the leader of H.P. Lovecraft if anyone was, had been a folkie in the early 1960s, entering the rock scene in the mid-1960s on the Windy Cityís Dunwich label. He cut a single of the Beatlesí "Norwegian Wood," as well as a cover (not issued until the early 1970s) of Bob Dylanís "Quit Your Low Down Ways" with Steve Miller on guitar. He also sang backing vocals on a couple of Shadows of Knight hits, yet by late 1966 was playing in a lounge jazz trio at a local Holiday Inn. The groupís strongest asset was the superb dual harmony lead vocals of Edwards and Michaels, showcasing Michaelsí operatic four-octave span with a blend reminiscent of the Jefferson Airplane. Michaelsí multi-instrumental virtuosity on organ, harpsichord, piano, clarinet, and recorder-often bolstered by session players on horns, clarinet, piccolo, and vibes-gave the band a much wider range of timbres than much of their competition. Their seeming determination to plough different ground with every cut sometimes misfired, as with the too-cheerful version of Dino Valentiís "Letís Get Together" and the hokey old-time music of "The Time Machine." More often, though, H.P. Lovecraft devised a haunting ambience that lived up to their pledge on the back sleeve to make songs inspired by (author) H.P. Lovecraftís "macabre tales and poems of Earth populated by another race."
