Lorca, Federico Garcia The House of Bernarda Alba
Genre Play Keywords Family Relationships Mental Illness Obsession Religion ... Suicide Summary This short play is set in rural Spain at the turn of this century. The characters, all women, exist in a cloistered household managed by a newly widowed mother of five daughters. Under the shadow of the church and the tyranny bred from a need to protect the reputation of the family, the matron (Bernarda Alba) represses her daughters by enforcing an eight year mourning period. The tensions build rapidly among the imprisoned women, with a demented grandmother playing a role resembling that of a Greek chorus. Eventually, the natural spirits of the daughters circumvent Bernarda, but the result is violence and a suicide. Commentary The powerful features of this work include its terse dialogue, rapidly built tensions which are relentlessly sustained until the dramatic climax, and the hint of madness and impending chaos which informs the behavior of the characters in conflict. This is a study in family relationships under the strain of culturally and socially imposed taboos regarding sexuality and the self-determination of women.

A Vienna ci sono dieci ragazze,
una spalla dove piange la morte
e un bosco di colombe disseccate.
C'e' un frammento del mattino
nel museo della brina.
C'è un salone con mille vetrate.
Ahi! Ahi! Ahi! Ahi!

Frederico Garcia Lorca
Writer Poet Artist
Martyr of the Spanish Civil War
Frederico Garcia Lorca was one of the great Spanish writers and artists of the 20th Century. In his short lifetime he produced a wide variety of novels, short stories, poetry as well as paintings, drawings and even musical compositions.
He influenced such politically disparate artists as the poet Neruda and the painter Dali
On August 19, 1936, at the age of 38, Lorca was beaten to death by Franco's falangists along with several other 'disappeared' political opponents of Franco.
While his homosexuality was known even then, his fascist assassins used this to make his assassination look like a bit of 'rough trade' gone wrong,(see Why Lorca Was Murdered ) the real reason for his death was his outspoken defense of the Republic and his criticisms of monarchism, Catholicism and Fascism.

Federico Garcia Lorca
People of Andalucia Federico Garcia Lorca
Revolutionary
Federico Garcia Lorca is not only Spain's most universal poet, but he is also a universally recognised symbol of Spain - and especially Andalucia - itself. His poems paint a vivid and intrinsecally poetic portrait of this fascinating region, with its stark landscapes of olive groves and fig trees, its moonlit nights among whitewashed walls and Moorish towers, its bullfighters and, above all, its gypsies with their free-roaming ways and fierce codes of living and loving. The fact that Lorca was summarily executed at the onset of the Spanish Civil War has to some extent increased his fame, but the reverse side of the coin is that the political implications of the tragedy have eclipsed his worth as one of the 20th century's most brilliant and innovative poets.

federico garcia lorca • Poet / Playwright. federico garcia federico garcia lorca Biographical essay and five poems, federico garcia
http://www.who2.com/federicogarcialorca.html
FEDERICO GARCIA LORCA Poet / Playwright Federico Garcia Lorca was one of the most critically acclaimed Spanish poets of the 20th century, famous not only for his poems and plays, but also as an early martyr of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). His reputation as a poet was secured in the 1920s with the publication of Libra de Poemas (1921) and Primer Romancero Gitano (1928). In the 1930s, after a brief time in the United States and Cuba, he gained even more recognition for his plays, especially what has been called his "earth trilogy" (or "rural trilogy"), Bodas de Sangre Blood Wedding Yerma (1934) and Le Casa de Bernarda Alba The House of Bernarda Alba ). Shortly after he finished the last of the trilogy, he was arrested by nationalists who supported General Francisco Franco and executed without a trial. Although his work was not overtly political, Lorca had incurred the wrath of the fascist Escuadra Negra ("Black Squadron") because of his leftist leanings and, apparently, his homosexuality. Lorca was buried in a mass grave, believed to be near the village of Barranco de Viznar, in Granada, and his works remained officially banned in Spain until 1971. In 2003 it was announced that his body would be exhumed and reburied. His other works include the poems Llanto por Ignacio Sanchez Mejias and Poet in New York , and the plays Mariana Pineda (performed with a set designed by Salvador Dali and El Publico
Other 20th century poets on Who2 include Allen Ginsberg Anne Sexton and Langston Hughes
