Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth
"Great is the art of beginning, but greater is the art of ending." "For age is opportunity no less Than youth itself, though in another dress, And as the evening twilight fades away The sky is filled with stars, invisible by day." "A torn jacket is soon mended; but hard words bruise the heart of a child." "I have an affection for a great city. I feel safe in the neighbourhood of man, and enjoy the sweet security of the streets." "Not in the clamour of the crowded street, Not in the shouts and plaudits of the throng, But in ourselves, are triumph and defeat." "If we could read the secret history of our enemies we should find in each man's life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility." "Yes, we must ever be friends; and of all who offer you friendship let me be ever the first, the truest, the nearest and dearest!" "Joy, temperance, and repose, slam the door on the doctor's nose." "Ah, how skilful grows the hand That obeyeth Love's command! It is the heart and not the brain That to the highest doth attain, And he who followeth Love's behest Far excelleth all the rest."

Tower Records Born: February 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine, United States Died: March 24, 1882, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was an American poet who was popular and successful during his time. He is noted for his ability to write about the hopes and tragedies of life in a simplistic style and with technical expertise. His father was an influential and successful lawyer. Longfellow was educated at the private schools, Portland Academy, and Bowdoin College. He graduated at the age of fifteen. He was heavily influenced at school by the writings of Sir Walter Scott and Washington Irving After graduation he began to teach modern languages at Bowdoin. The new curriculum meant that Longfellow studied European culture. His exposure to French, Spanish, and Italian during his travels are reflected in his own works.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
If students have encountered Longfellow before taking a college course, the poems they know are not in this anthology: Evangeline The Song of Hiawatha The Courtship of Miles Standish . The Longfellow of this anthology is our late twentieth-century "revisionist" Longfellow, and except in poems such as "A Psalm of Life," he is almost unrecognizable as a writer who might have written those famous poems. If students have not actually read Longfellow, but merely heard of him (the typical case), they want to know why he's so famous. Longfellow is accessible, and the fact is that in almost any class there will be students who adore "A Psalm of Life" and students who cannot stand it. Such a division, of course, presents the teacher with an ideal point of departure. Although Longfellow is now very unfashionable, he is nevertheless an excellent vehicle for teaching about poetry either to the unlimited or the turned-off. Oddly enough, students in general respond to the story of his life almost more readily than to his poetry. That, therefore, is a good place to begin. They often ask about his fame. Some respond very positively to his sentimentalism, which can be tricky.

    Paul Revere's Ride
    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
    Listen my children and you shall hear
    Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
    On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
    Hardly a man is now alive
    Who remembers that famous day and year. He said to his friend, "If the British march
    By land or sea from the town to-night,
    Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
    Of the North Church tower as a signal light,
    One if by land, and two if by sea;
    And I on the opposite shore will be, Ready to ride and spread the alarm Through every Middlesex village and farm, For the country folk to be up and to arm." Then he said "Good-night!" and with muffled oar Silently rowed to the Charlestown shore, Just as the moon rose over the bay, Where swinging wide at her moorings lay The Somerset, British man-of-war; A phantom ship, with each mast and spar Across the moon like a prison bar, And a huge black hulk, that was magnified By its own reflection in the tide. Meanwhile, his friend through alley and street Wanders and watches, with eager ears, Till in the silence around him he hears The muster of men at the barrack door

Index The most important Boston Brahmin poets were Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes , and James Russell Lowell. Longfellow, professor of modern languages at Harvard, was the best-known American poet of his day. He was responsible for the misty, ahistorical, legendary sense of the past that merged American and European traditions. He wrote three long narrative poems popularizing native legends in European meters "Evangeline" (1847), "The Song of Hiawatha" (1855), and "The Courtship of Miles Standish" (1858). Longfellow also wrote textbooks on modern languages and a travel book entitled Outre-Mer , retelling foreign legends and patterned after Washington Irving's Sketch Book . Although conventionality, sentimentality, and facile handling mar the long poems, haunting short lyrics like "The Jewish Cemetery at Newport" (1854), "My Lost Youth" (1855), and "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" (1880) continue to give pleasure.
