This is the poem of the air,
Slowly in silent syllables recorded;
This is the secret of despair,
Long in its cloudy bosom hoarded,
Now whispered and revealed
To wood and field. (Snow-flakes, 13-18)

So it was that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow knocked at the door of 105 Brattle Street in Cambridge, MA to see the widow Craigie about a room to rent. The year was 1837. Longfellow became a boarder in the house that he would eventually own and where he would live for the rest of his life, until his death in 1882 at age 75. Today, of course, hardly anyone refers to the stately Georgian mansion by any other appellation than that of The Longfellow House. But it did have an honored history before the beloved poet lived there. Built in 1759 by John Vassall, the house, in its earliest days, was most famously known as the headquarters for George Washington during the American Revolution. Washington lived there for ten months during 1775-6, during which time he and his wife, Martha, celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary.

    HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW
    LONGFELLOW, HENRY WADSWORTH American poet, was born on the 27th of February 1807, at Portland, Maine. His ancestor, William Longfellow, had immigrated to Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1676, from Yorkshire, England. His father was Stephen Longfellow, a lawyer and United States congressman, and his mother, Zilpha Wadsworth, a descendant of John Alden and of Priscilla, the Puritan maiden. Longfellows external life presents little that is of stirrin~ interest. It is the life of a modest, deep-hearted gentleman whose highest ambition was to be a perfect man, and, througi sympathy and love, to help others to be the same. His boyhooc was snent mosttv in his native town, which he never rPRsed t( love, and whose beautiful surroundings and quiet, pure life he has described in his poem My Lost Youth. Here he grew up in the midst of majestic peace, which was but once broken, and that by an event which made a deep impression on him the War of 1812. He never forgot the sea-fight far away, How it thundered oer the tide, And the dead captains as they lay In their graves oerlooking the tranquil bay, Where they in battle died. In 1835 Longfellow was chosen to succeed George Ticknor as professor of modern languages and belles-lettres in harvard. On receiving this appointment, he paid a second visit of some fifteen months to Europe, this time devoting special attention to the Scandinavian countries and Switzerland. During this visit he lost his wife, who died at Rotterdam, on the 29th of, November 1835.

    listen to hear The hurrying hoofbeat of that steed, And the midnight-message of Paul Revere. henry wadsworth longfellow, 1860.
    http://www.paulreverehouse.org/events/poem.html
    L ISTEN, my children, and you shall hear
    Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
    On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five;
    Hardly a man is now alive
    Who remembers that famous day and year. He said to his friend, "If the British march
    By land or sea from the town to-night,
    Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
    Of the North Church tower, as a signal light,
    One, if by land, and two, if by sea;
    And I on the opposite shore will be,
    Ready to ride and spread the alarm Through every Middlesex village and farm, For the country-folk to be up and to arm." Then he said "Good-night!" and with muffled oar Silently rowed to the Charlestown shore, Just as the moon rose over the bay, Where swinging wide at her moorings lay The Somerset, British man-of-war; A phantom ship, with each mast and spar Across the moon like a prison-bar, And a huge black hulk, that was magnified By its own reflection in the tide. Meanwhile, his friend, through alley and street Wanders and watches with eager ears, Till in the silence around him he hears The muster of men at the barrack door

    A Short Biography
    Images of a young Henry Longfellow and the Bowdoin College Library Henry Wadsworth-Longfellow was a powerful figure in the cultural life of nineteenth century America. Born in 1807, he had become a national literary figure by the 1850s and a world-famous personality by the time of his death in 1882 Henry's grandfather, Peleg Wadsworth (1748-1829), was a Revolutionary War general who later served seven terms in the United States Congress. The family home in Portland was built for Peleg in 1785-6. Father Stephen Longfellow (1776-1849) was a lawyer and legislator who helped found many of Maine's early cultural institutions, including the Maine Historical Society (1822). Henry's mother and early encourager was Zilpah Wadsworth Longfellow (1778-1851), direct descendant of Plymouth's John and Priscilla Alden, and a woman of learning, wit, and liberal religious convictions.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807- 1882), grew up in the house and went on to become one of the most famous men of his time. General Peleg Wadsworth , built the house in 1785-1786, and the last person to live there was Anne Longfellow Pierce , Henry's younger sister. Mrs. Pierce, widowed at an early age and lived in the house until her death in 1901. At that time, in accordance with a deed she executed in 1895, the house passed to the Maine Historical Society to be preserved as a memorial to her famous brother and their family.

    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow -
März 1882 in Cambridge (Massachusetts).
