B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) The most popular American poet of the 19th century, a storyteller, whose works are still cited - or parodied. Longfellow's works ranged from sentimental pieces such as 'The Village Blacksmith' to translations of Dante. Among his most interesting works are EVANGELINE (1847), a narrative poem of the former French colony of Acadia, echoing such epics as Homer's Odyssey , and THE SONG OF HIAWATHA (1855), especially noted for its sing-song meter and shamanistic rhythm. Longfellow is considered the first professional American poet. A number of his phrases, such as "ships that pass in the night", "the patter of little feet", and "I shot an arrow into the air", have become a common property. "At the door on summer evenings,
Sat the little Hiawatha;
Heard the whispering of the pine-trees,
Sounds of music, words of wonder "

Longfellow National Historic Site is an outstanding example of a historic site representing the themes of arts and literature. For almost half a century (1837-1882) this was the home of one of the world's foremost poets, scholars and educators, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Longfellow House is also significant in America's colonial history. General George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the newly-formed Continental Army, headquartered and planned the Siege of Boston here between July, 1775 and April, 1776. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow enjoyed enormous popularity during his lifetime and continues to influence our cultural and historical perceptions. He and his immediate and extended family and friends played a central role in the intellectual and artistic life of nineteenth century America and are credited with shaping a distinctly American identity and culture. Longfellow House was a favorite gathering place for many prominent philosophers and artists including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Julia Ward Howe, and Charles Sumner.

LONGFELLOW, HENRY WADSWORTH
, poet and translator. The most popular poet of his day and the first American poet to make an adequate living at his profession, Longfellow is now largely dismissed as a writer of little depth, whose work was rendered artificial and sentimental by his alliance with the privileged society of Victorian Boston and Cambridge. A professor of modern European languages first at Bowdoin College in his native Maine and, after 1836, at Harvard, he established himself as a lyric poet with Voices of the Night (1839), which contains one of his most famous poems, "The Psalm of Life." This volume was followed by Ballads and Other Poems (1841), which includes such well-known works as "The Wreck of the Hesperus," "The Skeleton in Armor," "The Village Blacksmith," and "Excelsior." His Poems on Slavery (1842), a nod to the antislavery movement prompted by his liberal Unitarian values, was dedicated to William Ellery Channing. For the most part, however, unlike John Greenleaf Whittier, he kept his poetical vocation separate from matters of conscience and wrote most often and compellingly on nostalgic and picturesque themes. In 1847 he published Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie

    The Challenge of Thor
    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
    I AM the God Thor,
    I am the War God,
    I am the Thunderer!
    Here in my Northland,
    My fastness and fortress,
    Reign I forever! Here amid icebergs
    Rule I the nations;
    This is my hammer, Giants and sorcerers Cannot withstand it! These are the gauntlets Wherewith I wield it, And hurl it afar off; This is my girdle; Whenever I brace it, Strength is redoubled! The light thou beholdest Stream through the heavens, In flashes of crimson, Is but my red beard Blown by the night-wind, Affrighting the nations! Jove is my brother; Mine eyes are the lightning; The wheels of my chariot Roll in the thunder, The blows of my hammer Ring in the earthquake! Force rules the world still, Has ruled it, shall rule it; Meekness is weakness

    Includes text of poem by henry wadsworth longfellow.
    http://paulreverehouse.org/events/poem.html
    L ISTEN, my children, and you shall hear
    Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
    On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-Five;
    Hardly a man is now alive
    Who remembers that famous day and year. He said to his friend, "If the British march
    By land or sea from the town to-night,
    Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
    Of the North Church tower, as a signal light,
    One, if by land, and two, if by sea;
    And I on the opposite shore will be,
    Ready to ride and spread the alarm Through every Middlesex village and farm, For the country-folk to be up and to arm." Then he said "Good-night!" and with muffled oar Silently rowed to the Charlestown shore, Just as the moon rose over the bay, Where swinging wide at her moorings lay The Somerset, British man-of-war; A phantom ship, with each mast and spar Across the moon like a prison-bar, And a huge black hulk, that was magnified By its own reflection in the tide. Meanwhile, his friend, through alley and street Wanders and watches with eager ears, Till in the silence around him he hears The muster of men at the barrack door

    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born on February 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine. His father, Stephen Longfellow, was a Portland lawyer and congressman, and mother Zilpah, was a descendant of John Alden of the Mayflower. Longfellow was fond of reading and at thirteen he wrote his first poem, "The Battle of Lovell's Pond," which appeared in the Portland Gazette
    Longfellow's translation of Horace earned him a scholarship for further studies. After graduating in 1825 he traveled in Italy, France and Spain from 1826 to 1829, and returned to the United States to work as a professor and librarian in Bodwoin. He translated for his students a French grammar, and edited a collection of French proverbs and a small Spanish reader. In 1831 he married Mary Storer Potter, and made with her another journey to Europe, where he studied Swedish, Danish, Finnish, and the Dutch language and literature. On this trip he fell under the influence of German Romanticism. Longfellow's wife died at Rotterdam in 1835.
    In 1839 he published the romantic novel

One glance at the Moses-like profile on the jacket of the new Library of America edition of his selected poems and prose confirms as much, a silver-hued photograph taken late in his life that makes it appear as if the domed brow and furling beard were already sculpted in marble. The stately cadence of his name alone reverberates with gravitas: trochee, trochee, dactyl, a name that all but demands to be chiseled on the base of a bust or high on the portico of a classical-revival library. And so it has been, time and again, even as his once-monumental repute has gradually eroded since his death in 1882.

    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, A Poet for All People
    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was probably the best loved of all American poets, and for good reason. His rhymes remain in the mind because of their melodic quality, and his themes are familiar to all kinds of people the world over. The most obvious appeal that Longfellow's poetry has is its spirit of optimism and faith in the goodness of life which has the power to lift any reader's spirit. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born to Stephen and Zilpah Wadsworth Longfellow on February 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine. Because this was a seaport town the citizens had a breadth of view no landlocked citizens had. Longfellow was intrigued by the variety of people and activity of the harbors, and he became curious about life beyond the borders of his world. He started school at age three and was an exceptional student. Soon it became obvious that young Henry was drawn to words and writing, probably due to his mother's reading aloud to him and his brothers and sisters. One of his favorites was Cervantes' Don Quixote , but the book that most influenced him was Washington Irving's Sketch Book . This book instilled in him his love of native legend and landscape.
