43. War Of The Classes: The Scab
Transcript of a speech American socialist and author jack london gave on the topic of strikebreaking to the Oakland Socialist Party in 1903.
http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/London/Writings/WarOfTheClasses/scab.html
WAR OF THE CLASSES
THE SCAB
(Speech first given before the Oakland Socialist Party Local , April 5, 1903)
In a competitive society, where men struggle with one another for food and shelter, what is more natural than that generosity, when it diminishes the food and shelter of men other than he who is generous, should be held an accursed thing? Wise old saws to the contrary, he who takes from a man's purse takes from his existence. To strike at a man's food and shelter is to strike at his life; and in a society organized on a tooth-and-nail basis, such an act, performed though it may be under the guise of generosity, is none the less menacing and terrible. It is for this reason that a laborer is so fiercely hostile to another laborer who offers to work for less pay or longer hours. To hold his place, (which is to live), he must offset this offer by another equally liberal, which is equivalent to giving away somewhat from the food and shelter he enjoys. To sell his day's work for $2, instead of $2.50, means that he, his wife, and his children will not have so good a roof over their heads, so warm clothes on their backs, so substantial food in their stomachs. Meat will be bought less frequently and it will be tougher and less nutritious, stout new shoes will go less often on the children's feet, and disease and death will be more imminent in a cheaper house and neighborhood. Thus the generous laborer, giving more of a day's work for less return (measured in terms of food and shelter), threatens the life of his less generous brother laborer, and at the best, if he does not destroy that life, he diminishes it. Whereupon the less generous laborer looks upon him as an enemy, and, as men are inclined to do in a tooth-and-nail society, he tries to kill the man who is trying to kill him.

Jack London
Schriftsteller
12. Januar: Jack London (eigtl.
ab 1891

London wird wegen Landstreicherei verhaftet.
Januar: "To the Man on Trail" ist Londons erste veröffentlichte Kurzgeschichte.

A Short Jack London Biography Page 1 of 2 Jack London's Credo
"I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them, I shall use my time."
ack London was a man of adventure, a man of action and only he could have truly conceived such a dynamic and challenging credo as this. And only he, with his great physical strength, his intense intellect, and his turbulent spirit, could have successfully lived up to it. He died when he was only forty, but he accomplished more in this short lifetime than most men could in several lifetimes. Source: Jack London's Tales of Adventure New York: Doubleday, 1956, Introduction by and edited by Irving Shepard "Born in San Francisco in 1876 Jack London grew up in a world witnessing the settlement of the last frontier. Gone forever were the proud days of the pioneer. The country was beset with economic and cultural changes that for decades were to play havoc with the traditional American way of life. It was a world in transition. The easygoing days of an economy dominated by agriculture were being replaced by the world of machine, the factory, and the financial titan. America in the late 1800s was a battleground for unscrupulous tycoons and robber barons. The Far West was torn apart by the struggles of the big railroad interests. Financial panics followed one after the other as the "Big Four" plotted and conspired to gain more money and power. The economy remained in a state of flux. And the people were the pawns.

Priscilla came to England from Nigeria with the goal of the exhibition being to revive the Art of Tatting with “Innovation for the New Millennium”. Priscilla did not realise that there was a world of tatters out here :-)))
She has taught tatting in isolation all over Nigeria with weeklong classes to groups of 50 Students... and they all tat by the end. :-)) You can see why Priscilla has been named the “Queen of Tatting” by the Nigerian Television. Front cover of Priscilla's book published in September 1987 after her series on Nigerian television.

LONDON, JACK
, author. London's life and writing played a major role in reshaping the ideas of authorship and of literary expression in early twentieth-century America. Out of a San Francisco childhood of extreme poverty and hard manual labor—he was cannery worker, oyster pirate, and seaman while still in his teens—London burst on the literary scene at the turn of the century with fresh subject matter and iconoclastic beliefs. He achieved almost immediate success. Drawing upon his year in the Klondike during the Alaskan gold rush of 1897-1898, his initial and probably still most significant body of work consisted of short stories and novels set in the Far North. In them men and beasts test their strength and knowledge against the elemental forces of nature and the rapaciousness of other men. London's best Klondike fiction was collected in his first book, The Son of the Wolf (1900), and other volumes and reached its peak in the short novels The Call of the Wild (1903), his most famous novel, and

Old-time saying of Jack London's friends:
"Jack's home is the real home." "Perhaps there is no place of its kind in the west that has attracted so many and such a variety of visitors as the Home That Jack Built. 'The latch string is always on the outside at the Beauty Ranch, and there are always blankets and grub for our friends. Come visit us, and stay as long as you like.'" "It is dreadfully hard for me to get my friends to understand just what the ranch means to me... . From a utilitarian standpoint I hope to do two things with the ranch: (1) To leave the land better for my having been; (2) and to enable thirty or forty families to live happily on ground that was so impoverished that an average of three farmers went bankrupt on each of the five ranches I have run together." Jack London
