Jack London (John Griffith) (1876-1916)
Jack London, whose life symbolized the power of will, was the most successful writer in America in the early 20th Century. His vigorous stories of men and animals against the environment, and survival against hardships were drawn mainly from his own experience. An illegitimate child, London passed his childhood in poverty in the Oakland slums. At the age of 17, he ventured to sea on a sealing ship. The turning point of his life was a thirty-day imprisonment that was so degrading it made him decide to turn to education and pursue a career in writing. His years in the Klondike searching for gold left their mark in his best short stories; among them, The Call of the Wild, and White Fang. His best novel, The Sea-Wolf, was based on his experiences at sea. His work embraced the concepts of unconfined individualism and Darwinism in its exploration of the laws of nature. He retired to his ranch near Sonoma, where he died at age 40 of various diseases and drug treatments.

Jack London - his life and books
"I would rather be ashes than dust!
I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze
than it should be stifled by dry rot.
I would rather be a superb meteor,
every atom of me in magnificent glow,
than a sleepy and permanent planet.
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist.
I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them.
I shall use my time"
Jack London (1876 - 1916)
Jack London Jack London fought his way up out of the factories and waterfront dives of West Oakland to become the highest paid, most popular novelist and short story writer of his day. He wrote passionately and prolifically about the great questions of life and death, the struggle to survive with dignity and integrity, and he wove these elemental ideas into stories of high adventure based on his own firsthand experiences at sea, or in Alaska, or in the fields and factories of California. As a result, his writing appealed not to the few, but to millions of people all around the world. Along with his books and stories, however, Jack London was widely known for his personal exploits. He was a celebrity, a colorful and controversial personality who was often in the news. Generally fun-loving and playful, he could also be combative, and was quick to side with the underdog against injustice or oppression of any kind. He was a fiery and eloquent public speaker, and much sought after as a lecturer on socialism and other economic and political topics. Despite his avowed socialism, most people considered him a living symbol of rugged individualism, a man whose fabulous success was due not to special favor of any kind, but to a combination of unusual mental ability and immense vitality.

The House of Happy Walls (Museum)
Built by Charmian London in 1919-26, this house is similar to Wolf House in some ways - the Spanish-style roof tiles and walls of field stone, for example - but it is much smaller and more formal. Charmian lived here whenever she was not traveling abroad or staying with relatives. After her death in 1955 at the age of 84, her will directed that the house be used as a memorial to Jack London and as a museum that would house the London collection of photographs and exhibits about the life and adventures of the world-famous author. It also contains a park visitor center where you can purchase books by and about Jack London.
Much of the furniture in the house was designed by the Londons and custom-built for use in Wolf House. The library is furnished with equipment from London's study. The big roll top desk, the Dictaphone, and some of the other items on exhibit here appear in old photographs showing London at work.

ClassicNote on Jack London
Biography of Jack London

Jack London embodied all the harshness and tragedy of his naturalism writing style. His life seems to have been recollected in a mostly bitter tone. The roots of his unhappy life initially sprung from the problems of his parents. His mother, Flora, had started off on the path to happiness. She was stricken with typhoid fever that not only ruined her looks but damaged her eyesight and stunted her growth. She lost her hair and wore a wig for the rest of her life, as well as a size twelve child's shoe. When Jack was eight, Eliza married a boarder in her family's home. Captain Shepard moved her and his three children to another part of Oakland. Jack was devastated. A few months later, an epidemic wiped out John's chicken coops. Discarding dreams of a successful farm, the London family also moved back to Oakland. Jack was delighted, once again proximate to Eliza and Mammie Jennie, to whom he was still very close. In the streets he learned how to fight bullies on his way to school. He was not strong, but he garnered a reputation for cunning ability to brawl. At aged fourteen, Jack graduated from grammar school. Because his family could not afford to send him to high school, he went to work at a canning factory. Fortunately, his rigorous childhood had developed a muscular physique. His childhood was a lonely one, supplemented by books from the local librarian, the first person of culture to enter Jack's life.

John Griffith London
By Dr. Clarice Stasz
John Griffith London (1876-1916) was born in San Francisco of an unmarried mother, Flora Wellman. His father may have been William Chaney, a journalist, lawyer, and major figure in the development of American astrology. Because Flora was ill, Jack was raised through infancy by an ex-slave, Virginia Prentiss, who would remain a major maternal figure while the boy grew up. Late in 1876, Flora married John London, a partially disabled Civil War veteran. The family moved around the Bay area before settling in Oakland, where Jack completed grade school. Though the family was working class, it was not so impoverished as London's later accounts claimed. As an adolescent, London worked at various hard labor jobs, pirated for oysters on San Francisco Bay, served on a fish patrol to capture poachers, sailed the Pacific on a sealing ship, joined Kelly's Army of unemployed working men, hoboed around the country, and returned to attend high school at age 19. In the process, he became acquainted with socialism and was known as the Boy Socialist of Oakland for his street corner oratory, and would run unsuccessfully several times on the socialist ticket as mayor. Always a prolific reader, he consciously chose to become a writer as an escape from the horrific prospects of a life as a factory worker. He studied other writers and began to submit stories, jokes, and poems to various publications, mostly without success. Spending the winter of 1897 in the Yukon provided the metaphorical gold for his first stories, which he began publishing in the Overland Monthly in 1899. From that point he was a highly disciplined writer, who would produce over fifty volumes of stories, novels, and political essays. Although

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Jack London (1876-1916) - original name John Griffith Chaney Prolific American novelist and short story writer, whose works deal romantically with the overwhelming power of nature and the struggle for survival. London's identification with the wilderness has made him popular among the Green movement. His left-wing philosophy is seen in the visionary novel THE IRON HEEL (1908). JOHN BARLEYCORN (1913), which describes London's drinking bouts, connects him with such later authors as Charles Bukowski and Jack Kerouac . On the other hand, the author's views about the superiority of white people and Social Darwinism, have placed him among ultra-right conservatives. "Fiction pays best of all and when it is of fair quality is more easily sold. A good joke will sell quicker than a good poem, and, measured in sweat and blood, will bring better remuneration. Avoid the unhappy ending, the harsh, the brutal, the tragic, the horrible - if you care to see in print things you write. (In this connection don't do as I do, but do as I say.) Humour is the hardest to write, easiest to sell, and best rewarded... Don't write too much. Concentrate your sweat on one story, rather than dissipate it over a dozen. Don't loaf and invite inspiration; light out after it with a club, and if you don't get it you will nonetheless get something that looks remarkably like it." - (From 'Getting into Print', first published in 1903 in

No Suicide!
Protocol of a discussion
On the unreliability of biographers
by Reinhard Wissdorf
translated by Jack Mulder B asically it was never a question for me: Jack London, proud adventurer, was finally brought to his wits' end by life and all his problems and put bullet in his head. And all of thirty books I read all merely offered the same short information: suicide. Until I finally went to Glen Ellen myself, that is. I hotfooted it all over the ranch, visited the venerable ruins of the wolfhouse, and of course entered it against the rules (well, here you are, now I can own up to it). I shed a tear at his grave (right, I know his body's not in there, because had himself burned, but it's a nice gravestone!). And then, in the museum, I happened upon a strange document. A Death Certificate. Signed by four M.D.s: death by kidney failure. At first, I didn't recognize it for what it was. But later, back home in Germany, it started worming it's way into my consciousness. Waddayamean? Kidney failure I right away took a look at what DTV (a German paperback publishing house) had to say to this, and came up with the probably silliest biographical note ever: Jack London was born on Dec. 12th, 1876 in San Francisco and grew up in poor circumstances. He tried his luck working in a factory, as an oyster pirate, hoodlum, and seaman, finally got his grades and started to study. He then went to Alaska as a golddigger, lived for months in the London slums, was taken prisoner in the russian-japanese war, where he was a war correspondent, and generally travelled the world. On Nov. 22nd, 1916 on his farm the famous writer puts an end to his life ruled by alcohol and extravaganza.
