Livius Andronicus E u s andr u n I u s] Pronunciation Key Livius Andronicus , fl. 3d cent. B.C. , Roman poet, a Greek, b. Tarentum (Taranto). He was captured and made a slave at the fall of Tarentum and was freed by his master, a Livian noble, hence his name. Later he became a teacher and an actor. He introduced Greek literature into Rome, translating the Odyssey and adapting Greek plays that he first produced in c. 240 B.C. Sometimes called the founder of Roman drama, he composed and acted in the first comedy and the first tragedy in Latin (both adopted from Greek models). Only fragments of his works remain. Home Beyond the Classroom Figuring Out How Roman Mythology Got So Darned Mixed Up Figuring Out How Roman Mythology Got So Darned Mixed Up
Adapted From: Mythology For Dummies Roman religion and, therefore, Roman mythology, was a long, drawn-out process of bringing together the gods, stories, and rituals of various cultures and making them Roman. People who study religion or mythology for a living call this syncretism. A Roman might nod to his Lares and Penates (original Roman gods) in the morning, pray to Isis (an Egyptian goddess) at lunchtime, attend a feast in honor of Heracles (a Greek hero), in the afternoon, have his future told by a haruspex (a priest who had learned the Etruscan art of liver-based fortune telling) later in the day, and ended the day attending a meeting of the cult of Mithras (a Persian deity whose followers met in caves). By doing all of this, this Roman wasn't betraying his culture; he was being a good Roman! After all, what was the point of conquering the world if you don't have cool new gods and cool new stories to show for it?
Why the Greek pantheon?

The Golden Age of Roman Drama All dates B.C.
Livius Andronicus adapted a Greek comedy and tragedy for performance on a Roman stage.
240 B.C. was not only the beginning of Greek drama in Rome, but of formal Latin literature. This coincides with the end of the first Punic War (264-241) which is relevant because with the Punic War, Romans came into contact with the Greeks of Southern Italy and Sicily. Instead of being concerned entirely with mastering their physical world, the Romans were now becoming a world power. In addition to adapting Greek drama, Livius Andronicus also translated the Odyssey into Latin. (Duckworth p. 3)
Ennius born.

Roman Literature
Very little remains of the ritualistic songs and the native poetry of the Romans and Latins before the rise of a literature. The history of the Roman Empire is fundamental to the fabric of this literature: in the first three centuries of its development, the influence of captive Greece was all-pervasive. The question how artistic works originated in the latin language was posed by the romans themselves and in rather simple terms. The common opinion was that the precise date of birth could be fixed to 240 BC, the year in which Livius Andronicus put on the stage a drama (tragedy) he had written. The romans themselves however were fully aware that the origins of their literature rooted in Greece. Did you know? Livius Andronicus was captured and made a slave at the fall of Tarentum and was freed by his master, a Livian noble, hence his name. Roman Literature
