Bush by U.S. Congress while Lian Alan, sophomore in LAS, speaks at an anti-military retaliation rally on the Quad on Monday. The sign also had "NSF" printed across it to stand for "non-sufficient funds," according to Alan. "Scary as hell" was how Vietnam War veteran Paul Wisovaty described public support for Sunday's military strikes against Afghanistan. He said the government received comparable praise when he returned from his combat tour three decades ago, largely because Americans "made the mistake of believing the government." According to Wisovaty, there's no justification for the bombings. "The American people must demand (peace)," he said. Wisovaty spoke Monday afternoon on the Quad at an anti-military retaliation protest. Progressive Resource/Action Cooperative holds a rally each year to protest the "indiscriminate killings" resulting from Columbus' entry into the New World. This year the membership used the annual rally to protest future bombings in Afghanistan. Lian Alan, sophomore in LAS and master of ceremonies at Monday's rally, said the cooperative wanted to stop the "blank check for aggression in a war against terrorism." The group also distributed postcards at the rally and asked supporters to mail them to Rep. Tim Johnson in protest of funding the attacks through tax dollars.

Survey says most students support war

The Daily Illini Ryan Biller said he fully supports America's war on terrorism, but has mixed feelings about military action against Afghanistan. But Biller, senior in engineering, said if he was called upon by his country, he would serve in the military. "I am not going to run away," he said. Biller's support echoes a recent study conducted by Harvard University's Institute of Politics, which found nearly 70 percent of college-age males would serve their country if drafted. Trevor Dryer, a student at Harvard and co-founder of the survey, said civic duty is the reason why so many college students would serve their country if drafted. But 68 percent said they are not in favor of reinstating the draft. It also found four of every five college students support the war on terrorism and two-thirds agree with placing ground troops in Afghanistan. Jeremy Norton, senior in engineering, agrees that the United States should be fighting terrorism, and feels ground troops should be sent to Afghanistan. "In order for (terrorism) to be fixed, we have to show them consequences for (the terrorist's) actions," Norton said. Norton said he also feels the U.S. should hold countries that harbor terrorists, like Afghanistan, accountable.

"I was very surprised to win the award because there were so many qualified candidates," Alan said.

National Protesters End Sit-In at U. of Illinois The Associated Press CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Protesters demanding that the University of Illinois eliminate its Chief Illiniwek mascot ended a 32-hour campus sit-in Friday after lawmakers agreed to discuss the controversial symbol. A group of roughly 40 protesters calling itself the Multicultural Coalition Against the Chief took over the school's main administrative building early Thursday, demanding that the university eliminate the much-debated Indian mascot and a related Indian-head logo. In return for ending the protest, coalition members were expected to meet April 27 in Springfield with several state legislators, including Senate President Emil Jones. Although the agreement ended the group's occupation of the building, the two sides did not reach a consensus on the mascot issue, said Lian Alan, a spokesman for the coalition.

Healey #9 10 Nov 2002 The University of Illinois Board of Trustees has faced increasing criticism over the past few years for their lack of democracy and action on a wide variety of issues at UI. The Board was even investigated for criminal violations of the Illinois Open Meetings Act. Yet the Board continues to refuse to decide on possibly the most visible controversy on campus: "Chief Illiniwek," the University's mascot. The "Chief" issue will be prominent at the Board's upcoming meeting on November 13th and 14th. In response to the Board's inaction, one local organization is planning two events around the Board's upcoming meeting in Champaign-Urbana on November 13th and 14th, the trustees' only meeting at the main UI campus this semester. The Progressive/Resource Action Cooperative (PRC) will be holding a public forum on the "Chief" on November 12th and its members will have strong presence at the Board's public comment session on November 14th to demand the Board eliminates the "Chief." According to Lian Alan, PRC co-coordinator, "The '"Chief" issue has somehow disappeared from the Board's agenda. With these actions, the PRC and supporters of the anti-"Chief" movement hope to put the issue back in front of the Board."

World's Out of Tune (2)
"Enduring Freedom" in Song and Poetry
When the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center crumbled on September 11, 2001, the world really fell out of tune . But quiet the minstrels ? No, they were not. Great historical events have always been treated in ballads. Thus, hundreds of songs and poems have been written since to get over the atrocities, to honour the victims and rescue workers, to raise money, to stir patriotic feelings, to criticize military actions, and to propagate the clash of cultures or mutual understanding. It is presented by means of folk, marching tunes, jazz, pop, rock, hip hop, techno, new age, and weird sound clips. Some are written with the deepest and most honest feelings, but there is also false pathos and the downright silly. If it is true that songs embody the vox populi , display attitudes, opinions, dreams and aspirations of a people, one may uncover much more ambigious facets than the official view and the publicized opinion pretend. But instead of singing ballads in the streets and distributing broadsheets, nowadays folks set up websites and instantly spread the word around the globe. (See also
