ST MARK'S DUNDELA BELFAST
St Mark's and C S Lewis
Clive Staples Lewis, the notable Christian writer, was baptized in the font at the west end of the church on January 29th 1899 by his grandfather, the Rev. Thomas Hamilton, Rector of St. Mark's. His entry in the baptism register is shown below: We celebrated the centenary of his baptism (Link to the Baptistry) at Morning Service on Sunday 31st January 1999. The Address was given by The Rt. Rev. D.A.R. Caird M.A., D.D., L.L.D., H.Dip.Ed. C S Lewis was called, almost against his will, to serve God by writing and speaking about 'mere Christianity', in philosophical books and science fiction, in childrens' stories and on the radio. Many thousands have heard and are hearing his message, for his books still sell in great numbers all over the world. C S Lewis and his brother, Warren, known as 'Warnie' presented a window to the church in 1935 in memory of their father and mother. Three Saints are shown: two Gospel writers, St Mark and St Luke, on either side of St James. We may wonder why St James, the son of Zebedee, is the central figure. Perhaps because his shrine at Compostela in Spain was a mediaeval place of pilgrimage - the pilgrim's bag and staff and the pilgrim's badge, the scallop shell, shown in the window hint at this. But perhaps simply because Albert Lewis's second name was James. The Saint holds a silver chalice, similar to one which Albert and his family presented to the church in 1908 in memory of their father, Richard Lewis, engineer and shipbuilder, who lived nearby at Ty Isa, Parkgate Avenue, Belfast.

The Life of Clive Staples ("Jack") Lewis
Born Clive Staples Lewis November 29 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Albert James Lewis (1863-1929) and Flora Augusta Hamilton Lewis (1862-1908). His brother, Warren Hamilton Lewis had been born on June 16, 1895.
The Lewis family moved to their new home, "Little Lea," on the outskirts of Belfast.
Mother died of cancer on August 23, Albert Lewis' (her husband's) birthday; C. S. Lewis (nicknamed "Jack") and Warren sent to Wynyard School in England.
Attends Campbell College Belfast for one term due to serious respiratory difficulties.
Studied at Cherbourg School, Malvern England, following Warren; remained remarkably poor in mathematics, unlike his mother, but evidenced an increasing affection for "Northernness" e.g. Wagner's music and Norse mythology. It was during this time that he abandoned his childhood Christian faith.
In April, Lewis met Arthur Greeves (1895-1966), of whom he said, in 1933, "After my brother, my oldest and most intimate friend." Extensive literary and philosophical studies (Latin, Greek, French, German, and Italian) under the private tuition of W. T. Kirkpatrick ("The Great Knock").
Won scholarship to University College, Oxford.

C. S. Lewis
Clive Staples Lewis, Jack to his friends, was born in Belfast on 29 November 1898. A solicitor's son, educated mostly in England, he won a classical scholarship to Oxford University in 1916. Enlisting in the army, he was wounded at Arras in 1918. On resuming his studies, he entered into a curious relationship with a demanding older woman, Janie Moore, following a promise made to her son who was killed in the war. Despite the financial burden, Lewis set up home with Mrs Moore and her daughter, first in Oxford and later at nearby Headington Quarry. In 1932 they were joined by Lewis' elder brother Warnie, who had retired from the army. Lewis remained in the house after Mrs Moore's death in 1951 and in 1956 married an American divorcee, Joy Davidman, to enable her to avoid extradition. This second curious relationship brought unexpected happiness, but his wife died of bone cancer in 1960, and Lewis himself died at home on 29 November 1963. With a triple first, Lewis became a fellow and tutor of Magdalen College in 1925. An agnostic, he found his views changing, helped by the vigorous discussions of academics known as the Inklings, notably J. R. R. Tolkien. From theism he came to a full acceptance of Christianity - 'the most dejected and reluctant convert in England', he later wrote. In 1936 he won the Hawthornden prize with

    C.S. Lewis Chronicles
A Compendium of Information about this Great Writer
Although the world tragically lost a great man on November 22, 1963, he left us a rich legacy of literature which lives on. Not only was Clive Staples (Jack) Lewis prolificthe fact that he wrote in a wide variety of genres means he has produced something for everyone. Lewis' work ranges from poetry to science fiction, from academic treatises to defenses of the Christian faith, from anointed correspondence to sanctified fantasy. As we approach the millennium, his popularity continues to grow; everything Lewis wrote for publication remains in print. Many read Lewis merely for pleasure, and he certainly offers that. Others search his books for answers to questions about eternity and humanity's place in the cosmos. The fact that Lewis, a professor at both Oxford and Cambridge, possessed a keen intellect strengthens his credibility in many circles. That this brilliant agnostic came to recognize the validity first of Theism, and then of Christianity, provides an amazing testimony. That he could also communicate the gospel so effectively to the "common person" is an additional evidence of his skill. Lewis, a faithful member of the Anglican communion, was no defender of denominational particulars. His calling was to promote a profound vision of "mere Christianity," which is nothing less than the heart of the faith. His theology was thoroughly incarnationalfocusing always on Jesus Christ. It is no accident that his popular Chronicles of Narnia series revolves not around human protagonists, but around Aslan himself.

Researched, Compiled, and Written by Mary Van Nattan
Editor: Steve Van Nattan [God] said (in the Bible) that we were “gods” and He is going to make good His words. If we let Him—for we can prevent Him, if we choose—He will make the feeblest and filthiest of us into a god or goddess, a dazzling, radiant, immortal creature, pulsating all through with such energy and joy and wisdom and love as we cannot now imagine. —
    C. S. Lewis,
    Beyond Personality
(London: The Centenary Press, 1945), 48.
Also contained in Mere Christianity (New York: Macmillan Company, 1952), 174-175. Further up and further in Into Salt Lake City "Must our image of God go?" C. S. Lewis once rhetorically queried the late Anglican Bishop John A. T. Robinson. Robinson, noted thirty-five years ago for (then) avant-garde proposals, had suggested it was high time feminine images for God were introduced to balance out the traditional masculine ones. To this Lewis replied ironically, "I shouldn't believe it strongly, but some sort of case could be made out." John F. Kennedy, C.S. Lewis, and Aldous Huxley all died on the same day.
