C. S. Lewis, noted author, scholar and Christian apologist Individuals have surrendered their lives to Christ in all sorts of places. The revivalist Charles G. Finney converted in a woods; John Newton, author of the hymn "Amazing Grace," repented while lashed to a ship's wheel in a storm; Chuck Colson, founder of Prison Ministries, asked God into his life while crying in a car on a roadside. C. S. Lewis converted while riding to a zoo in his brother's motorcycle side car. "When we set out I did not believe that Jesus is the Son of God and when we reached the zoo I did." Jack (as he preferred to be called) had earlier become a theistone who believes there is a God. His conversion

The Creator of Narnia: C. S. Lewis
by Ann-Marie Imbornoni

C. S. Lewis, or Jack Lewis, as he preferred to be called, was born in Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland) on November 29, 1898. He was the second son of Albert Lewis, a lawyer, and Flora Hamilton Lewis. His older brother, Warren Hamilton Lewis, who was known as Warnie, had been born three years earlier in 1895. Early Days
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. A Painful Loss
This somewhat idyllic boyhood came to an end for Lewis when his mother became ill and died of cancer in 1908. Barely a month after her death the two boys were sent away from home to go to boarding school in England. Lewis hated the school, with its strict rules and hard, unsympathetic headmaster, and he missed Belfast terribly. Fortunately for him, the school closed in 1910, and he was able to return to Ireland. After a year, however, he was sent back to England to study. This time, the experience proved to be mostly positive. As a teenager, Lewis learned to love poetry, especially the works of Virgil and Homer. He also developed an interest in modern languages, mastering French, German, and Italian. An Oxford Scholar
In 1916 Lewis was accepted at University College, the oldest college (founded 1249) at Oxford University. Oxford, along with Cambridge University, had been a leading center of learning since the Middle Ages. Soon after he entered the University, however, Lewis chose to volunteer for active duty in World War I, to

Lewis, C. S. (Clives Staples) A Grief Observed
Genre Journal (151 pp.) Keywords Grief Illness and the Family Love Religion ... Survival Summary When confirmed bachelor C. S. Lewis married Joy Davidman in 1956, it was at first a friendly marriage of convenience so that she and her sons could remain in England. By the time of her death from cancer three years later, their partnership had become one of passion, friendship and such deep love that Lewis was almost paralyzed by his loss. In this undated journal, he documents with brief observations first the overwhelming sensations of his grief, then his rage and confusion at God. As time passes, he chronicles his return to religion and his acceptance of a new life, forever shaded by Davidman's presence but still whole. The style and writing are beautiful but clear and accessible, and the honesty of his sentiments is clear whether or not readers have found themselves in similar situations. Commentary C. S. Lewis, often best known for his series The Chronicles of Narnia and other science fiction, was an author known for "translating the concepts of Christianity into the language . . . of the everyday world." His publications included The Screwtape Letters, The Allegory of Love, and Mere Christianity.

Marvin M. Lewis Award
Elks Founded in 1868, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is one of the oldest and largest private organizations in the United States. Today there are nearly 1.3 million members of the Elks in 2,200 local lodges found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and several overseas locations. Lodges provide recreational facilities for the entire family, and they are the focal point for many community services and charitable programs. The Marvin M. Lewis Award recognizes Elks in good standing who have significantly contributed to the youth of their communities by volunteering in the programs of the Boy Scouts of America. The Boy Scouts of America established the Marvin M. Lewis Award in 1998 in recognition of the Elks’ significant contributions to Scouting and the development of America’s youth. Marvin M. Lewis award winners are Elks who have brought Scouting to more youth, have assisted local Elks lodges in forming Scouting units, are fully trained in the skills of Scouting and are outstanding role models. These winners have also worked to bring Scouting and the Elks together to serve the community and have been instrumental in organizing scouting. The award is named for the Honorable Marvin M. Lewis, PGER, who has given such strong support to Scouting over the years. The Grand Lodge invites all local Lodges to nominate ONE candidate for the award. Candidates must have the recommendation of their local Lodge and their local Scouting Council to be eligible. Each year eight Elks will receive Marvin M. Lewis Awards, which consists of a medal and ribbon, a framed certificate, a lapel pin and a square knot.

The Bible and C. S. Lewis
A Study of the Christian World View
This web site is designed to promote the study of the works of C. S. Lewis. Clive Staples or "Jack" Lewis (1898-1963) was a tutor at Oxford University, England and later the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English Literature at Cambridge University, England. He wrote apologetics, science fiction, children and adult fantasy, and much more. His writings and radio talks became so popular that he was called an "apostle to the sceptics" by Time magazine. In recent years his life still draws interest: the movie "The Shadowlands" is based on his relationship with Joy Davidman. His imagination, the clarity of his writing style, the force of his apologetic and his integrity have influenced thousands of people. This site has links to other web resources and it has information about a discussion guide I wrote called The Bible and C. S. Lewis which presents the Christian world-view. I added A Frequently Ask Question Page which not only has questions and answers about C. S. Lewis and my discussion guide, but some favorable comments from readers of my guide. Finally I added a The Bible and C. S. Lewis Bookstore

TESTAMENT TO BRAVERY
AUGUST 5, 1996
TRANSCRIPT The fascinating journey of a 19th century sculpture - The Death of Cleopatra - and the incredible determination of her creator, Edmonia Lewis, is remembered by Charlayne Hunter-Gault. CHARLAYNE HUNTER-GAULT: The work of nearly 7,000 artists from all over America has found a home here at Washington’s National Museum of American Art. But none has had a longer or more perilous journey than this two-ton sculpture, 'The Death of Cleopatra,' by Edmonia Lewis. Also, perhaps few of the artists whose work has ended up here has had a more difficult and ultimately more mysterious existence. This is Edmonia Lewis: Born in the middle of the 19th century, part Chippewa Indian, part African-American, and an orphan. Little is known about this woman who as a child roamed the woods with the Chippewas. Accounts tell of a successful brother who insisted she got to college. He supported her at Oberlin College in Ohio, a major abolitionist center at the time. There her talent for drawing emerged. But it was later in Boston that her desire to become a sculptor took hold. From Boston she journeyed to Rome, home to many expatriate American artists, including several women. It was while in Rome that she created 'Cleopatra.' In 1876 and ‘78, Cleopatra was shown to some acclaim in the United States. Then after taking it from Philadelphia to Chicago, Lewis had to put it in storage because she couldn’t afford to take it back to Rome. Museum curator George Gurney told us what happened to the statue.

More NP -complete Problems One of the claims made in the last section was that there are lots and lots of NP -complete problems which are of interest to the practical computer scientist. Now it is time to fulfill this prophecy and demonstrate this. We shall examine some of the popular NP -complete problems from various computational areas. Logicians should be quite pleased that satisfiability for the propositional calculus is NP -complete. It means that they will still be needed to prove theorems since it seems unlikely that anyone will develop a computer program to do so. But we, as computer scientists need to see problems which are closer to home. This is also more than a theoretical exercise because we know that any problem which is NP -complete is a candidate for approximation since no subexponential time bounded algorithms are known for these problems. First, we shall review the process of proving a problem NP -complete. We could do it from scratch like we did for SAT. But that is far too time consuming, especially when we have a nifty technique like reduction. All we need to do is:
  • show that the problem is in NP reduce an NP -complete problem to it, and
