C. S. Lewis (1898-1963)
One of the truly towering intellects of the twentieth century, Clive Staples Lewis was a Christian apologist, moral mythologist, scholar and writer, born in Belfast, N. Ireland. Lewis taught at Magdalene College, Oxford from 1925-54 and from 1954 at Cambridge. His time at Oxford brought him into an association with some of his peers, who gathered regularly in their rooms or at local public houses to recite their personal work to each other. This group, who came to be known as the Inklings, included J. R. R. Tolkien and Charles Williams.
The central event in Lewis' life was his conversion to Christianity, a process which occupied the years 1929-31, and which provided the foundation for all his later work. Lewis documents his spiritual odyssey in the book, "Surprised By Joy" (1955). He came to the attention of the public as a result of a series of radio broadcasts during World War II, in which his ability to present deep Christian truth in a simple and engaging way won him wide popularity with the listening audience. That popularity was not shared, however, by his academic colleagues, who were jealous of his success. " The Screwtape Letters " (1942), a correspondence between two of Hell's demons named Screwtape and Wormwood, is his best-known book.

WYNDHAM LEWIS AND VORTICISM
THE iconoclastic Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) was England's leading avant-garde artist of the early Twentieth Century. He was the founder and main practitioner of Vorticism, a sort of English Futurism , which he proclaimed in the magazine Blast Lewis was a complex figure with many interests and talents besides art. Despite the authoritarian sympathies he expressed in the 1930s, his sheer intellectualism continues to intrigue a wide audience of fans and academics alike. Lewis was a friend of Ezra Pound's , and connected with and strongly influenced by the philosopher and cultural critic, T E Hulme . One of Lewis' keenest disciples was Marshall McLuhan, the prophet of the information society. Lewis Wallace
Although he would have much preferred to be remembered as a highly successful military hero, Lew Wallace has been thwarted in this ambition and is best known as an author. Born in Indiana, he had worked as a clerk and early displayed a fascination for Mexico which would affect him in later years. During the Mexican War he served as a second lieutenant in the lst Indiana but saw only minor action. In 1849 he was admitted to the bar in his native state and seven years later entered the state senate.
With the outbreak of the Civil War he offered his services, and his assignments included: adjutant general of Indiana (April 1861); colonel, 11th Indiana (April 25, 1861); colonel, 11th Indiana (reorganized August 31, 1861); brigadier general, USV (September 3, 1861); commanding 3rd Division, District of Cairo, Department of the Missouri (February 14-17, 1862); major general, USV (March 21, 1862); commanding 3rd Division, Army of the Tennessee (February 17-June 1862); commanding 8th Corps, Middle Department (March 22, 1864-February 1,1865 and April 19-August 1, 1865); and also commanding the department (March 22, 1864-February 1,1865 and April 19-June 27, 1865).
At the close of the war he sat on the court-martial which tried the Lincoln conspirators and presided over that which sent Andersonville chief Henry Wirz to the gallows. He then joined a movement to aid the Juarez forces against Maximilian in Mexico. He tried to raise money and troops and even accepted the title of major general from the Juarez group. On November 30, 1865, he resigned from the U.S. service, but his Mexican venture collapsed and he realized little of the money which he had hoped to gain from it. In later years he was governor of the New Mexico Territory and a diplomat to Turkey. As a prolific writer, who often drew upon his own experiences, he is best remembered for

Lewis Carroll Photography Page
Lewis Carroll became interested in photography in the infancy of this scientific art form. He was a man of infinite patience and one who paid attention to the smallest detail. These qualities were mandatory to be a photographer in the 1850's. The wet collodion process was demanding indeed. It is thought that he gave up photography when the dry developing process came to the fore, because it made photography too easy. Anybody could do that. Where was the challenge? At any rate he is considered one of the best amateur photographers of his time. I think he was a bit of a photography snob. Carroll certainly would chose UNIX over Windows (who wouldn't?).

About Lewis Wickes Hine
Lewis Wickes Hine (1874 -1940), photographer, sociologist and humanist, is best known for his insightful portraits of immigrants at Ellis Island and his unflinching views of housing and labor conditions in the United States. Studying and eventually teaching at the Ethical Culture School in New York City, Hine infused his humanist concerns into a style of documentary photography that set the standard for delivering a social message through his medium. The worker was always a favorite theme of Hine's and he believed that the emerging modern technologies of the 1920's and 1930's would lift the burden of hard labor from them. Hine began in the 1920's a series of photographs he called "Work Portraits" which showed man and machine at work together. Perhaps his best known series from this group is his commission to document the construction of the Empire State Building from March 1930 to May 1931. At the conclusion of the project Hine published Men at Work, a picture book which summarized his theme. Anthony T. Troncale

Lewis, C(live) S(taples) (1898-1963)
Literature professor at Oxford from 1925 and Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University after 1954 who wrote extensively as a Christian apologist. His cosmic trilogy, Out of the Silent Planet Perelandra (1943), and That Hideous Strength (1945), explores the idea, popular among Catholic authorities during the early decades of the twentieth century, that the assumption of multiple inhabited worlds is compatible with Christian doctrine and that beings on other planets might be in a variety of different spiritual states. Some worlds, accordingly, might be in an Eden-like state of grace, others "fallen", redeemed, or in a condition of "integral nature" midway between man and angel. Some might even be so evil that they were beyond redemption. This was essentially an updated and expanded version of the idea proposed by some Medieval Christian Aristotelians that the heavenly regions between the Moon and the primum mobile might be occupied by angelic intelligences. In Lewis's vision, Mars ("Malacandra") has yet to experience the Fall of humankind, Venus ("Perelandra") has seen it averted, while Earth ("Thulcandra") is isolated by divine decree.
