Philip Levine, MD
An internationally renowned researcher in the field of immunohematology, and a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists for 45 years, Philip Levine, MD, is best known for his discovery of the human Rh antigen blood factors. ASCP bestowed its prestigious Ward Burdick Award, the Society's highest honor, on Dr. Levine and his colleague Alexander Wiener, MD, in 1946, for their joint work on the Rh blood factors. Dr. Levine was an active ASCP member from 1942 when he joined the Society and served on the Council of Immunohematology and the Blood Bank Committee in the '50s and '60s. In 1969, ASCP established the Outstanding Research Award Honoring Philip Levine to recognize Dr. Levine for his many contributions to clinical medicine. It is presented annually to researchers who have made acclaimed contributions to molecular pathology, immunohematology and immunopathology through their valuable activities in the basic sciences. Born August 10, 1900, in a small village of what was then Polish Russia, Dr. Levine's family immigrated to the US to escape anti-semitism and fearful pogroms. Philip was only eight years old when he arrived and his family settled in Brooklyn, New York, taking the name Levine. His uncle William worked for a man named Levine, adopted the name, as other relatives immigrated, they, too, became Levines.

"The Return"
from THE MERCY

All afternoon my father drove the country roads
between Detroit and Lansing. What he was looking for
I never learned, no doubt because he never knew himself, though he would grab any unfamiliar side road and follow where it led past fields of tall sweet corn in August or in winter those of frozen sheaves. Often he'd leave the Terraplane beside the highway to enter the stunned silence of mid-September, his eyes cast down for a sign, the only music his own breath or the wind tracking slowly through the stalks or riding above the barren ground. Later he'd come home, his dress shoes coated with dust or mud, his long black overcoat stained or tattered at the hem, sit wordless in his favorite chair

T HE Q UALITY OF M ERCY:
P HILIP L EVINE'S T HE M ERCY
Early in his career, Levine's poetry was often characterized
as very angry, and that anger provided much of the energy
fueling many of his best poems. But that rage evident
at an earlier age and in a large share of his poetry, although
not gone altogether, has given way to some extent in recent years, especially in his three latest collections, to an even more thoughtful and reflective poetry exhibiting an even greater generosity of spirit.
F or a number of years now, Philip Levine has held a secure position among the handful of American poets who have written substantial bodies of distinctive and influential poetry during the closing decades of the twentieth century. Since the 1963 publication of his first book, On the Edge , Levine has produced a steady accumulation of powerful poems whose thematic and stylistic characteristics are as identifiable and revealing as the "auras of smoke and grease" or the "eyes swollen with sleeplessness" that mark those urban blue-collar workers in "Salt and Oil"—one of the remarkable poems from his latest collection
