Denise Levertov: Online Poems Talking to Grief Ah, Grief, I should not treat you
like a homeless dog
who comes to the back door
for a crust, for a meatless bone.
I should trust you.
I should coax you
into the house and give you
your own corner,
a worn mat to lie on,
your own water dish.
You think I don't know you've been living under my porch. You long for your real place to be readied before winter comes. You need your name, your collar and tag. You need the right to warn off intruders, to consider my house your own and me your person and yourself my own dog. Online Source September 1961 This is the year the old ones, the old great ones leave us alone on the road. The road leads to the sea. We have the words in our pockets, obscure directions. The old ones have taken away the light of their presence, we see it moving away over a hill off to one side. They are not dying, they are withdrawn into a painful privacy learning to live without words. E. P. "It looks like dying"Williams: "I can't describe to you what has been happening to me"

Add to a Notebook Denise Levertov Denise Levertov was born in Ilford, Essex, England, on October 24, 1923. Her father, raised a Hasidic Jew, had converted to Christianity while attending university in Germany. By the time Denise was born he had settled in England and become an Anglican parson. Her mother, who was Welsh, read authors such as Willa Cather, Joseph Conrad, Charles Dickens, and Leo Tolstoy aloud to the family. Denise was educated entirely at home, and claimed to have decided to become a writer at the age of five. When she was twelve, she sent some of her poetry to T. S. Eliot , who responded with two pages of "excellent advice," and encouragement to continue writing. At age seventeen she had her first poem published, in Poetry Quarterly During World War II, Levertov became a civilian nurse serving in London throughout the bombings. She wrote her first book, The Double Image , while she was between the ages of seventeen and twenty-one. The book, released in 1946, brought her recognition as one of a group poets dubbed the "New Romantics."

Levertov, Denise Death Psalm: O Lord of Mysteries
Genre Poem Keywords Aging Death and Dying Dementia Euthanasia ... Spirituality Summary Levertov structures this poem in many ways like a Biblical psalm: repetition, irregular rhythms, direct address. The poem is also reminiscent of a Catholic litany in which saints are invoked in repetitive phrases. It moves forward by piling particularity upon particularity. The movement of the first part of the poem corresponds to the process of aging, preparing to die, letting go of the world, a natural flow or rhythm. However, this natural process is aborted: "She did not die." The second part of the poem invokes the unnatural state in which she "lies half-speechless, incontinent, / aching in body, wandering in mind . . ." and describes the tubes and sores. "She is not whole." While the psalmist praises "O Lord of mysteries" for the beauty of sudden death, she cries "how baffling, how clueless / is laggard death . . . ." Death "that steals / insignificant patches of flesh" is a mystery.

(1923-1997), poet Born on October 24, 1923, in Ilford, Essex, England, Denise Levertov was educated entirely at home. She became a civilian nurse during World War II, serving in London throughout the bombings. Her first volume of verse, The Double Image (1946), was not very successful. She settled in New York the next year with her husband and was naturalized in 1955. She credited the spare, clear, objective work of the poet William Carlos Williams with being the greatest assistance in the development of her own vital American style. Here and Now (1957) was followed by several other collections of poetry, including Overland to the Islands With Eyes at the Back of Our Heads The Sorrow Dance (1967), and To Stay Alive (1971). She also translated the Buddhist work In Praise of Krishna: Songs from the Bengali (1967; with Edward Dimock, Jr.). Opposed to the war in Vietnam, she was active in the War Resisters League for whom she edited the collection Out of the War Shadow In Footprints (1972) she reverted to the mystical tone of her earlier works. Levertov's later efforts include essays and prose, as in
