Conversations with Denise Levertov
- Book Review, by Levertov, Denise
Card catalog description

Denise Levertov, American poet and activist, died in December 1997 at the age of 74. This book contains some twenty previously uncollected interviews conducted between the early 1960s and the middle of the 1990s. They are focused primarily on her work as a poet but also on her social and political concerns. The interviews in which Levertov discusses her craft constitute an important document on American poetry in the second half of the twentieth century. She talks of her legendary friendship with her mentor William Carlos Williams and her association with the Black Mountain Poets. As she discusses her craft in great detail, she gives special attention to diction, line lengths, versification, and choice of subject matter. Students of American culture and readers of American poetry will be delighted by this collection of the personal views of one of the century's best poets.

And I Cannot Be Silent
(After the Shatila massacre) As a devout Christian, my father took delight and pride in being (like Christ and the Apostles) a Jew.
It was
Hasidic lore, his heritage, he drew on to know the Holy Spirit as Shekinah. My Gentile mother, Welsh through and through, and like my father sustained by deep faith, cherished all her long life the words of Israel Zangwill, who told her, ‘You have a Jewish soul.’ I their daughter (‘flesh of their flesh, bone of their bone’) writing, in this Age of Terror, a libretto about El Salvador, the suffering, the martyrs, look from my page to watch the apportioned news - those foul dollops of History each day thrusts at us, pushing them into our gullets - and see that, in Lebanon so-called Jews have permitted so-called Christians to wreak pogrom (‘thunder of devastation’) on helpless folk (of a tribe anciently kin to their own. and now concentrated in Camps . . .)

Echoes Main Biography Sample Poetry Inspired Poems ... Bibliography Denise Levertov: The American Poet from Britain By John Nelson With over twenty published books of poetry, Denise Levertov is one of the most influential poets of the 20 th century. “Her own distinctive voice to poems concerned with multiple aspects of the human experience: love, motherhood, nature, war, the nuclear arms race, the environment, mysticism, poetry, and the role of the poet.” (http://www.English.uiuc.edu/maps/poets/) Her poetry speaks of the “vocation of a poet” (http://www.English.uiuc.edu/maps/poets/). Rainer Maria Rilke inspired the poet theme. After moving to America, Levertov was continued to be inspired by William Carlos Williams, Robert Creeley, Emerson, Thorean, Ezra Pound, Charles Olson and Robert Duncan. It is because of these poets that Levertov begins to experiment with her own style of poetry. As in her first book of poetry, The Double Image (1946) , Levertov was considered one of the “New Romantics” (www.poets.org) a new type of poet that begin to emerge in the late 1940’s. It is in later books that her own, individual style is developed.

Denise Levertov Order
SELECTED POEMS
Edited, and with an afterword, by Paul A. Lacey
Preface by Robert Creeley
" One of the most vitally innovative of contemporary poets"
Culled from two dozen poetry books, and drawing form sis decades of her writing life, The Selected Poems of Denise Levertov offers a chronological overview of her great body of work. It is splendid and impressive to have at last a clear, unobstructed view of her ground-breaking poetry — the work of a poet who, as Kenneth Rexroth put it, "more than anyone, led the redirection of American poetry...to the mainstream of world literature. "Described by Publishers Weekly as "at once as intimate as Creeley and as visionary as Duncan, "Levertov was lauded as "one of the indispensable poets of our language, one of those few writers to whom it is necessary to pay attention" by The Malahat Review . No poet is more overdue for a single accessible volume; no career could be better to have within easy reach. As a child, Denise Levertov (1923-1997) sent her poems to T.S. Eliot, who admired and encouraged her. Born in England and educated at home, she emigrated to the United States in 1948, and became one of the most important American poets of the second half of the 20th century. Levertov — who won the Robert Frost Medal, the Shelley Memorial Award, and the Lannan Prize — was also a staunch anti-war activist and environmentalist. "One of the essential poets of our time" (Poetry Flash), Denise Levertov was an inspiration to generations of writers.

Denise Levertov's passion for literature started early in life. Her mother, Beatrice Spooner-Jones Levertoff, home schooled Denise and brought the works of Willa Cather, Charles Dickens and Leo Tolstoy in to the home. At the age of 5, Denise declared that she wanted to be a writer. The poet's interest in Hasidic mysticism can be attributed to her father. Raised a Hasidic Jew, her father Paul Levertoff converted to an Anglican priest by the time Denise was born. Denise Levertov felt that her inherited propensities and the cultural environment of her family had everything to do with who she became. She became a highly respected American poet. 1923 Born October 24 in Ilford, Essex, England
1928 Alleged to have decided to become a writer
1935 Sent poetry to T. S. Eliot; he responded with 2 pages of "excellent advise," and encouragement

The Secret
Two girls discover the secret of life in a sudden line of poetry. I who don't know the secret wrote the line. They told me (through a third person) they had found it but not what it was not even what line it was. No doubt by now, more than a week later, they have forgotten the secret, the line, the name of the poem. I love them for finding what I can't find, and for loving me for the line I wrote, and for forgetting it so that a thousand times, till death finds them, they may discover it again, in other lines in other happenings. And for wanting to know it, for assuming there is such a secret, yes, for that most of all.
Talking to Grief
Ah, Grief, I should not treat you like a homeless dog who comes to the back door for a crust, for a meatless bone. I should trust you.
I should coax you into the house and give you your own corner

`Socially committed' poet Denise Levertov dies at 74
published in the HOUSTON CHRONICLE, December 30, 1997
SEATTLE (AP) Denise Levertov, a major American poet who took up such social and political issues as the Vietnam War and the trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, has died at 74. Levertov died Saturday at Swedish Hospital from complications of lymphoma. Influenced by William Carlos Williams and other American poets, Levertov's style evolved from traditional English to free-form. She addressed political and social themes, such as war, the environment and feminism, in an intense, lyrical voice. "She had this sort of singular and pure commitment of the kind I've never known of. She had this tenderness and kindness to animals and children, and she had this very strong attachment to nature," said Barbara Epler, Levertov's editor since the mid-1980s at New Directions, her longtime publisher. "She was really socially committed. It was important to her to go and protest at nuclear sites," she said. "She also protested the Vietnam War. She really put her money where her mouth was. It's like she was very 19th century with her vision of what poetry was and how total a calling it was."

Papers, 1962-1967.
42 items Access: Open Denise Levertov was an English-born poet who came to the United States in 1948 and became a naturalized citizen in 1956. She was the daughter of a Welsh mother and a Russian-Jewish father, both of whom claim mystics in their family lines. Levertov's poetry reflects her cultural and spiritual roots as well as her involvement in contemporary political movements. After her move to the United States, Levertov was introduced to the work of William Carlos Willams and became associated with the Black Mountain group of poets, particularly Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, and Robert Duncan. Levertov acknowledged these influences, but disclaimed any membership in a poetic school. Denise Levertov was politically active from the 1960's onwards, initially in the Vietnam War protests and later in the anti-nuclear movement. She was also active as a feminist. Levertov maintained the need for artists to be politically active and much of her poetry of the 1960's and 1970's reflected her political commitments. In addition to writing poetry Levertov has written much about the creative process and the aesthetics of contemporary poetry. She taught at numerous universities, primarily as a visiting artist. Levertov produced more than 20 books of poetry, criticism, and translations and edited several important anthologies.
