41. »Knarre Mit Begleitmusik« – Lethems Chandler-Hommage An Die Zukunft

"IT'S NEVER AS GOOD AFTER LUNCH"
    INTERVIEW WITH JONATHAN LETHEM
Thomas Stolmar and Alexander Laurence get bookish with Jon Alexander Laurence : You were originally a painter, so I'd like to know when did you have thoughts of being a writer? Jonathan Lethem : I was cultivating this whole covert writing thing as I was going to Bennington College. I was reading voraciously. I had already been working at used bookstores, which was a way to read a lot of different books. I was reading all sorts of books at the time: Laurence Durrell, Norman Mailer, Philip K. Dick, J. G. Ballard, and other stuff that I ended up not liking like The Beats, which I read throughout High School. I was obsessed with Kerouac and Burroughs. I was reading detective novels, mysteries, and science fiction at the same time. It was all wide open for me. I have never been able to read anything besides fiction effectively which is why I was never a very good student. I don't think abstractly very well. I think in terms of situations, metaphors, and images. On the strength of all the reading I did in High School and college, I think that I'm still the best read person in fiction that I know. That was what I was doing instead of doing well in school. AL : You went to Bennington at the same time that Bret Easton Ellis, Jill Eisenstad, and Donna Tartt were there, all who went on to write novels as well. How did that environment influence you?

    45. Bold Type: Excerpt By Jonathan Lethem
Fifteen chapters into the book, frustrated by his relationship with Alice slowly falling apart, Phillip Engstrand leaves campus for the first time. This chapter describes what he finds.
    http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0397/lethem/excerpt.html
paced campus until dark, then stalked back to the apartment. When I saw the blind men were home I got into my car and drove off campus, found a bar, and deliberately had a drink with a woman.
An interesting woman, as it happened. She was dark-haired and tall, with a penetrating gaze and a smile that didn't show her teeth. She was sitting alone, sheltering a glass of red wine. I told her my name was Dale Overling, and asked if I could sit at her table. She said yes.
"You're not from the campus," I said.
    "No."
    "Not affiliated."
    "No."
"Not a graduate of the school."
    "No. No connection."
"You can't imagine how much that turns me on."
    "Buy me a drink."
The bar was tame and suburban, a fifties cocktail lounge not yet refurbished by student irony. It was nearly empty, a weekend place on a week night. I'd picked it for its distance from campus. But when I flagged the waitress it was a girl I recognized, a dizzy undergraduate, costumed in yellow apron. Her eyes met mine and I froze her with a look of dread, willing her not to blow my cover. "Take this wine away," I said. "Bring us drinks. Margaritas, salt on the glass. Bring us six of them. Line them up on the table."

    My Marvel Years
    Jonathan Lethem
In the mid-1970s I had two friends who were into Marvel comics. Karl, whose parents were divorced, and Luke, whose parents were among the most stable I knew. My parents were something between: separated, or separating, sometimes living together and sometimes apart, and each of them with lovers. Luke had an older brother, Peter, whom both Luke and I idealised in absentia. Peter had left behind a collection of 1960s Marvel comics in sacrosanct box files. These included a nearly complete run of The Fantastic Four , the famous 102 issues drawn by Jack Kirby and scripted by Stan Lee, a defining artefact (I now know) of the Silver Age of comics.

ows of frames sat on glass shelves, clear lenses reflecting gray light from the Brooklyn avenue. Outside, rain fell. At the door a cardboard box waited for umbrellas. The carpet was pink and yellow, to the limits of the floor, to the tightly seamed glass cases. The empty shop was like a cartoonist's eyeball workshop, hundreds of bare outlines yearning for pupils, for voices. They fell short of expression themselves. The whole shop fell short. There was no radio. The white-coated opticians leaned on their glass counters, dreaming of their wives, of beautiful women who suddenly needed glasses. One of them moved into the rear of the shop and made a call. The other turned as the door chimed, two notes blurred momentarily in the rain's hiss. "You're back." "Damn fucking right I'm back." The black man wiped his feet just inside the door, though there wasn't a mat, then jogged forward into the shop. He wore a baseball cap, and his glasses. The optician didn't move. "You don't need to use language," he said. They'd sold him his glasses yesterday. One hundred dollars. He'd paid with cash, not out of a wallet.

The Edge of the Bed of Forever
by Jonathan Lethem and Angus MacDonald Strand knew his wife would soon notice how terribly old he was getting. It was only a matter of time. Lingering before his bathroom mirror, he catalogued the ravages. The yellow of his eyes, the white stubble growing up under, and out of, his nose, the saggy pouches of skin accumulating around his jaw. There was no mistaking it. He was pulling away from his wife, agewise. And soon it would be obvious to her. Using the time platform had been a dirty little secret from the beginning, but at the beginning he had had it under control. Now he was spending as much time in no-time with Angela as he was back here in realtime, with his wife. And it was turning him into an old man. He had no right to call himself forty-five anymore. He had lost track long before, but he was surely at least fifty by now, biologically. He opened the medicine cabinet and took out his bottle of dye disguised as a solution for remetabolizing corns and began combing it into his hair. A new irony occurred to him. His wife could save him. By noticing his aging, and accusing him of the adultery, she would put the stop to it that he couldn't himself. His lover, youthful, life-giving Angela, was killing him, and only his wife could save him. He finished, mussing his hair so it wouldn't look too combed. Downstairs his wife waited for him to join her in the large kitchen. He heard her. She was working already, piling the cotton shirts she and Strand would decorate with commercial logos today. All would be spotlessly clean, ready for the inking microbes they'd prepared the afternoon before. She would keep stacking them, silently reproachful, while he read his newsclod.

As She Climbed Across the Table by Jonathan Lethem is undoubtedly one of this season's most exciting new novels. Centering on perhaps the most bizarre love triangle you will ever encounter, it is both audacious in concept and brilliant in its execution. Already being hailed as an heir to Don DeLillo and Thomas Pynchon, Lethem is a dazzlingly clever writer you will be soon be hearing a lot about. The author reads from the novel for Bold Type, and we sat down with his editor Bill Thomas to discuss what makes Jonathan Lethem so utterly original. Finally, read the author's essay on one of his biggest influences, John Barth, and sample part of Barth's classic, The End of the Road

Macy. By Jonathan Lethem For filmgoers with a keen eye for writer's credits, Steve Shainberg's neo-noir "Hit Me" offers an intriguing two-for-one: noir legend Jim Thompson's novel "A Swell-Looking Babe" adapted for the screen by Denis Johnson, author of "Fiskadoro," "Jesus' Son" and many other haunting, enigmatic volumes of fiction and poetry. The lead actor, setting and premise of "Hit Me" are promising as well: Elias Koteas ("The Adjuster," "Exotica," "Crash") plays Sonny, a desperate, scuffling night bellhop in the ominous and claustrophobic Stillwell Hotel, where a sequence of seemingly random bad turns draws him into the sucker role in a violent robbery scheme. "Hit Me" was evidently a labor of love for the writer and director, who attracted a number of cult character actors as well as Johnson to the project. What should have been a low-budget jewel, however, goes badly off the rails. Instead, "Hit Me" is an object lesson in how much first-class talent at every level of a film's production can be set adrift when director and screenwriter don't know what kind of film they want to make. Uncertain whether to aim for morbid satire or poignant character study, "Hit Me" hedges. Sometimes Sonny the Bellhop functions as the plot's dupe, and the camera and story hold him at arm's length for our amusement. Then, in lingering and lugubrious close-ups, we're asked to indentify with his yearning for escape and with his bid for romance with Monique (played by French actress Laure Marsac), an authentic film noir hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold.

Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys and Caro and Jeunet's City of Lost Children are two unusually rich SF/fantasy films in current release. Both films' directors have had exceptionally compelling careers: Gilliam's previous films include Brazil and The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen , while Caro and Jeunet's first film was Delicatessen
lethem (moderator): On Head Space tonight we're going 'guestless' - the topic is, loosely, 12 Monkeys and City of Lost Children , two unusually rich new fantasy/science fiction films currently out. I'd like to encourage people to talk about Terry Gilliam's career in general, too, and about the film genre these films fit into - not just science fiction, but 'dreamlike fantasy' - the tradition that is almost closer to animation than realist film - sometimes credited as being originated by the French guy Georges Melies. centauri: I went and saw them too, Lethem. I felt, since I seem to be one of Head Space's biggest fans that it was my duty and I did not regret that I saw them.

Leaving Head Space in the capable hands of new co-hosts Martha Soukup and Angus MacDonald, founding host Jonathan Lethem moved into the guest's chair on Tuesday 8 October to discuss his new story collection, The Wall of the Sky, the Wall of the Eye (Harcourt Brace, 1996), and reminisce about the old days back when Head Space was run out of a tiny garage in Old Chatham, New York, and broadcast on a hand-cranked, diesel-powered computer.
Martha Soukup: Our special guest tonight is Jonathan Lethem, founding host of Head Space, star of Newsweek, and author of "Gun, With Occasional Music," "Amnesia Moon." And the new story collection, "The Wall of the Sky, the Wall of the Eye." Isylph: Wall eyed horse. Martha Soukup: He's one of the sharpest writers going, he's leaving us, let's all abuse him terribly! Geebee: He's being compared to Kafka. Martha Soukup: Says on this book, yes. He doesn't look Czech-German to me. Jonathan Lethem: Thanks for the nice introduction, Martha. It's funny being on the receiving end here after all this time.
