    27. Salon | Monstrous Acts And Little Murders
Introduction to the author's works, by jonathan lethem.
    http://www.salonmagazine.com/jan97/jackson970106.html
A new collection of unpublished stories
betrays the two faces of Shirley Jackson,
the writer who created "The Lottery." By JONATHAN LETHEM "The Lottery," of course, the story everyone knows even if they don't remember Shirley Jackson's name. A small New England town, blandly familiar in every way, sleepwalking its way through ritual murder. Likely the most controversial piece of fiction ever published in the New Yorker, resulting in hundreds of canceled subscriptions, later adapted for television, radio and ballet, it now resides in the popular imagination as an archetype. It can be as difficult to persuade readers that the story is just one sheaf in the portfolio of one of this century's most luminous and strange American writers as it is to explain that the town portrayed in "The Lottery" is a real one. The town hasn't changed, or at least it hadn't by the mid- eighties, when I was a student at the school. A handful of the townspeople portrayed in thin disguise in Jackson's novels and stories were still around. I knew the square where "The Lottery" takes place. It was Jackson's fate, as a faculty wife and an eccentric newcomer in a staid, insular village, to absorb the reflexive antisemitism and anti-intellectualism felt by the townspeople toward the college. She and her children were accessible in a way that her husband and his colleagues and students, who spent their days on the campus, were not. The hostility of the villagers further shaped her psyche, and her art; the process eventually redoubled so the latter fed the former. After the enormous success of "The Lottery," a legend arose in town, almost certainly false, that Jackson had been pelted with stones by schoolchildren one day, then gone home and written the story. The real crisis came near the end of her life, resulting in a period of agoraphobia and psychosis; she wrote her way through it in "We Have Always Lived in the Castle." In that novel, Jackson brilliantly isolates the two aspects in her psyche into two odd, damaged sisters: one hypersensitive and afraid, unable to leave the house, the other a sort of squalid demon prankster who may or may not have murdered the rest of her family for her fragile sister's sake. For me, it is that unique and dreamlike book, rather than "The Lottery," that stands as her masterpiece.

Corrections Not a warm puppy Jonathan Lethem reviews 'Happiness,' directed by Todd Solondz and starring Jane Adams, Dylan Baker and Philip Seymour Hoffman. By Jonathan Lethem Todd Solondz's "Happiness" is a masterpiece. OK, "Happiness" might be a masterpiece. I'd have to do more than see it again to really know I'd have to see it again five or 10 years from now, when the distractions and diversions of its present context have fallen away. "Happiness" is a good enough film, though, to deserve its audience's best efforts to banish distraction and view it clearly. A heralded entry in this month's New York Film Festival, "Happiness" was controversial before release for its scrupulous depiction of the daily life of a child molester though that, it should be said, is only one of several threads in this two-hour-plus, multiple-story-line black comedy. Dropped by its intended distributor (who scored a considerable success with Solondz's previous film, "Welcome to the Dollhouse"), the film has been released without a rating by a unique consortium brought together expressly for this purpose. Beyond such specific controversies, the scruffy, Gen-X-ish Solondz is being presented as the next independent film savior to an audience recently burned by overinflated expectations recall dragging your way through the last hour of

A Man's Agonizing Search for Meaning Like Fox's masterpiece, Desperate Characters, the main character, George, is eviscerated from a lack of meaning in his life, in spite of his job as a teacher and his decent wife. A life devoted to provisionalism, prudence, hoarding, reason, the same kind of life embraced by the narrator in Melville's "Bartleby," proves to result in a spiritually bankrupt soul. George earnestly seeks in vain for meaning and in doing so the novel sheds light on the bleakness of provisionalism as the modernist philosophy which the American middle class championed so blindly in the 1960s, the era in which this novel is written. George may fail in his search for meaning, but the novel is a triumph of vigorous prose, muscular syntax, and an uncompromising, angry critique of the smug middle-class complacency that afflicts too many of us. Fox On The Run Sentence for sentence, Paula Fox is the genuine article. This is the book you want to read on the subway, the commuter rail, in the coffee shop, your place of preference.

A third rate effort from a first rate author. First let me say that I greatly admire Jonathan Lethem. No one can fault his ambitious and aggressive imagination and creativity. He possesses a truly unique worldview and writing style. He has written some truly wonderful novelsmost notably Gun, with Occasional Music and Motherless Brooklyn. However, all of that notwithstanding, he is also a very frustrating writer in that his body of work is very uneven. There are ideas that no doubt looked quite tempting in the conceptual stage that should have been dumped in the writing phase as it should have been clear it wasn't going to work as a novel. Girl in Landscape is a case in point. The book is essentially an experiment in a change of contextin this case, a classic "western" set in a sci-fi context; instead of the classic American Western we have the classic Alpha Centuri (or whatever) western. This is not a new conceptual vehicle for Lethem; Gun with Occasional Music also followed this model. However Gun was a focused novela detective story first and foremost. Girl, on the other hand, is an unfocused mess. Is it a "coming of age" story or a "displaced" western? Unfortunately, it tries to be both and succeeds in being neither.

Bold Type's print excerpt from the novel.
    http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0999/lethem/excerpt.html
A true story, not a joke, though it was repeated as often, tugboatted relentlessly, was of the beat cop from Court Street who routinely dislodged clumps of teenagers clustered at night on stoops or in front of bars, and who, if met with excuses, would cut them off with: "Yeah, yeah. Tell your story walking". More than anything, this somehow encapsulated my sense of Minnahis impatience, his pleasure in compression, in ordinary things made more expressive, more hilarious or vivid by their conflation. He loved talk but despised explanations. An endearment was flat unless folded into an insult. An insult was better if it was also self-deprecation, and ideally should also serve as a slice of street philosophy, or as resumption of some dormant debate. And all talk was finer on the fly, out on the pavement, between beats of action: we learned to tell our story walking.
Wheels within wheels was another of Minna's phrases, used exclusively to sneer at our notions of coincidence or conspiracy. If we Boys ever dabbled in astonishment at, say, his running into three girls he knew from high school in a row on Court Street, two of whom he'd dated behind each other's backs, he'd bug his eyes and intone: wheels within wheels.
