Jonathan Lethem:
Motherless Brooklyn
Lionel Essrog, former denizen of St. Vincent's Home for Boys in Brooklyn and Tourette's syndrome-afflicted detective, is a Minna Man. He, along with three fellow orphans, runs mysterious errands for wiseguy Frank Minna and his detective-agency-slash-car service. When a stakeout goes wrong and Frank gets knifed, Lionel goes looking for the killer. The plot takes wild twists and turns, marked by indelible characters and acrobatic wordplay. Essrog, with his lovable tics and compulsions, embarks on a journey that is as much an existential search as it is a manhunt. In Jonathan Lethem's deft hands, even Brooklyn itself becomes one of the main characters in this deliriously funny novel.
Lethem is a literary risk-taker, in full command of his conflated and inventive art. Motherless Brooklyn turns the detective story on its head; it's an audacious homage to the hard-boiled crime novels of the '30s and '40s by way of Jorge Luis Borges, but like Lethem's past work, it defies easy categorization. It is both his most accessible and strongest work to date.
In this issue of Bold Type you'll find an excerpt adapted from Motherless Brooklyn

In the four years following the appearance of Jonathan Lethem's first novel, a surreal, futuristic noir called Gun, with Occasional Music , the author covered a tremendous amount of fictional territory: a post-apocalyptic road novel ( Amnesia Moon ), a hilarious academic parody ( As She Climbed across the Table ), and a western in outer space ( Girl in Landscape ). But it wasn't until 1999 and the publication of Motherless Brooklyn , a masterful literary work featuring a young detective with Tourette's syndrome, that a large mainstream audience discovered the charms of Lethem's work. Now, four years later

Newsweek's "100 People for the New Century," Jonathan Lethem reinvents familiar genres every time he sits down to write. In his latest novel, Fortress of Solitude (September 2003), Lethem plays with the conventions of superhero comics. Set in the 1970s and 1990s, in both Brooklyn and California, Fortress of Solitude follows the friendship of two boys, one white, one black, against a larger landscape of political, social and racial conflict. What makes the novel utterly different from typical coming-of-age stories is the fact that both teenagers have superhero powers. And, like many adolescent males, they use their powers mostly to ruin their own lives. ". . .a grim, brave, soaring American masterpiece." - Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Richard Russo Gun, with Occasional Music (1994), Lethem plunged his detective hero, Conrad Metcalf, into a world populated by mutant human infants, rabbits, kittens, dogs, and a murderous kangaroo. "Publisher's Weekly" named it one of the Best Books of 1994. San Francisco Examiner "Lethem has talent to burn."

Novelist Jonathan Lethem returns to his hometown to find it almost as strange as his own fiction. By Lorin Stein Sept. 23, 1999 I f you've heard of Jonathan Lethem, you probably heard about him the way I did, from a friend. The friend who turned me on to Lethem's last novel, "Girl in Landscape," did it the best way just opened the book and made me read the first paragraph: Mother and daughter worked together, dressing the two young boys, tucking them into their outfits. The boys slithered under their hands, delighted, impatient, eyes darting sideways. They nearly groaned with momentary pleasure. The four were going to the beach, so their bodies had to be sealed against the sun. The boys had never been there. The girl had, just once. She could barely remember.

T H U S F A R .
This interview began a few days ago, and very well might conclude today. If you have read portions of it, you may skip to the parts you have not yet read. If you have not read any of it, you may skip to the parts that seem easiest to read. Mr. Lethem has made many books, including Gun with Occasional Music, a scathing renunciation of Neo-Orthodox Catholicism, and Girl in Landscape, a reevaluation of British foreign policy after the Opium War. His new book is Motherless Brooklyn, a detective story wherein the protagonist suffers from Tourette's, and goes on to marry the young Ladybird Johnson. It is due in stores any minute now, and it is by most accounts Lethem's best work yet. Lethem was born in he United States sometime after WWII. He has brown hair and does not wear hats. He is known for his quick wit and even quicker temper. We are proud to have Jonathan Lethem as the first subject of these, the McSweeney's Interviews. McSwys:
Many years ago, when she was alive, Gertrude Stein famously said something derogatory about Oakland which is often quoted, because it is a famous quotatation, which she said at one time. My question therefore is a two parter: 1) How do you account for the disproportionately large Hungarian population in Bridgeport, Connecticut and 2) How do answer critics who deride you for not dealing more directly with subjects such as Oakland, Hungary, and Bridgeport, Connecticut in your work, insofar as it is purportedly the work of someone who claims to be an American?

think that Jonathan's a very interesting writer because he pays homage to classical and contemporary pop culture influences, but not in a way that's cheap and easy. He doesn't just drop brand names into his prose," says Thomas, explaining his interest in the young author.
Lethem's third novel, As She Climbed Across the Table, is a strange and dazzling love story and is unlike any other you are likely to have read. "I think this new novel represents a great leap for him, both in terms of his technique, and in terms of realization of a novel, a fully realized novel," declares Thomas. "It reminds me aesthetically of one of my favorite pieces of music, John Coltrane's My Favorite Things. Coltrane takes a standard pop song, a rather banal pop song, and expands and plays with it, still maintaining faithfulness to the melody, but through his own genius makes it a singular piece of work."
"I think Jonathan achieves the same thing with several influences in As She Climbed Across the Table, most prominently and obviously Alice in Wonderland.
