"A Collection of Classics" takes a perspective on what a classic book is, who has written them, and how they did it. The definition the team used is: "Classics are works that have been continually read by multiple generations and contain universal themes and ideas that never fail to provoke thoughts or emotions." The site provides information about many different authors (biographies, lists of their works, and links to other sites). "Creating Your Own Classic," gives information on the writing process, publishing, parts of a story, drama, poetry, and even tips on curing writers block. "The Childrens Corner" includes information on childrens authors, childrens books and writing for children. An "Authors Timeline", "Tours", and "Interact" complete this information-filled site. I 've been reading Madeleine L'Engle's books since I discovered A Wrinkle in Time in my junior high school library. I love both her inventive fiction and her inspirational and religious-oriented nonfiction, which is lively, interesting, and truly spiritual without being pious and bombastic. If I am having a crisis of faith, reading one of her nonfiction pieces usually restores my equilibrium. It is also fascinating to discover what events in her life have been worked into her fictionfor instance, her adopted daughter Maria forms the basis for the Meet the Austins character Maggy. But I find one of the things I enjoy most about her fiction is the way characters intertwine within her different novels. The first section of this page traces those linksif I've forgotten any, send me an e-mail! Many of her young adult and children's novels concern the lives of two families, the Murrys/O'Keefes and the Austins. The Murry family are introduced in the Newbery Award-winning A Wrinkle in Time

MADELEINE L'ENGLE "Most of the time nowadays we human beings are referred to as consumers. What does the consumer think? What does the consumer want? How ugly. Forest fires consume. Cancer consumes. I want us to be nourishers. To be a librarian, particularly a librarian for young adults, is to be a nourisher, to share stories, offer books full of new ideas. We live in a world which has changed radically in the last half century, and story helps us to understand and live creatively with change." - from Madeleine L'Engle's acceptance speech upon receiving the Margaret Edwards Award (American Library Association Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing in the Field of Young Adult Literature). Biography Madeleine L'Engle, whose most recent contributions to the literary and library fields have been as writer-in-residence and librarian at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, is one of the most loved and respected children's authors in America. She received the 1963 Newbery Medal for A Wrinkle in Time . Though L'Engle is the author of over forty volumes of plays, poems, essays, and novels for adults, she is best known for her novels for children and young adults that consist of an imaginative blend of science fiction, compelling storytelling, fairy tale, and important themes, such as familial love and moral responsibility.

Dazzles the darkness in my heart... A Wrinkle in Time . The adventure through the tesseract taken by Meg Murry, her mysterious brother Charles Wallace and their friend Calvin O'Keefe is the perfect introduction to archetypal L'Engle cosmology: time travel, magic, friendship, family love, stars, mysticism, the struggle to express uniqueness in the face of stifling authority, and individual connection to the universal. L'Engle is a writer of fiction (for adults and for children, although she does not distinguish between the two genres), journals, theology and poetry. These pages offer a sampling of her work, as a grateful tribute and a celebration.

S harer of Words and Wisdom By Audrey Rayner St. Mark How did she find the fortitude to keep writing? High school: College: Workshops: Advice to writers: Listen to your work. It will tell you where to go. Advice to adults:

Advice to teachers: Be so excited about your subject matter for your students, it will catch on. Success: When I finally got published, I breathed a great sigh of relief. Everything that happened to me changed, from small to important and from big to nothing. Children: Lending books: I buy two copies of a book, one exclusively for lending. E-mail: Mother: Words: Letters: God: Theology: Stories: Love the power of stories, Sufi stories, Jesus stories. To think about: A friend lost fingers of her right hand building a house. I asked her if it changed her thinking [to write with her left hand]. The answer was yes. She saw everything differently. Writing: High school students had a classmate who died. I told them to write about it. It was just about their best work. When you write, you write more than you know.

A friend introduced me to L'Engle when I was a young child, but I never actually read any of her books till I was a teenager. Then, one day at a used bookshop, I found A Wrinkle in Time for 50 cents. I remembered my friend's recommendation and purchased it. By the time I finished it, I was captivated. I had read elsewhere that L'Engle was actually anti-Christian (years before I first read her books), but to my very pleasant surprise, I found that they are very Christian (or at least God-fearing).

Madeleine L'Engle on aging and 'The DaVinci Code'
Madeleine L'Engle's book Walking on Water: Reflections on Art and Faith is one of the most important books in my life. Every artist should read it... every believer should read it... and anyone who's ever been tempted to believe should read it. My passion to encourage artists toward excellence was largely inspired by L'Engle's work.
Today, she's talking to MSNBC
about getting older, about Harry Potter, and about The DaVinci Code.

Hi, I'm Karen Funk Blocher. I built this website to help Madeleine L'Engle's readers figure out what books they want to read or buy for their collections, and where to get them. This website can also be helpful to people with questions about Madeleine L'Engle herself and students with papers to write. BUT: I'm NOT here to help you get out of reading a book for school, or to write part of your paper for you! If you have questions about Madeleine L'Engle or her books, please explore this website before you email me your questions. There are lots of links in the table of contents below to help you find what you need, including info about where you can write to Madeleine L'Engle herself. (Don't expect a reply, however. It is my understanding that she no longer answers her fan mail personally in most cases.)
Most of the questions I receive are already answered on the FAQ page , so you may want to start there. If you want basic information about the novels in each series and in what order to read them, start with my

Movie News!
Two of Madeleine's books have been adapted for the screen: A Wrinkle In Time , the movie, is the winner of the 2003 Best Feature Film Award at the Toronto Children's Film Festival ! The following is from the flm festivals press release: "John Kent Harrison's A WRINKLE IN TIME (Canada) won the Feature Film Award. Adapted from the classic book by Madeleine L'Engle, the film A WRINKLE IN TIME combines science fiction, romance, and adventure into a brilliant, multifaceted story. When Dr. Jack Murray, a world-renowned physicist, and his friend Hank experiment with fifth-dimension time travel and suddenly disappear, Murray's children and neighbour embark on a perilous quest with three celestial beings as their guides to find the missing scientists. The Feature Film Award was chosen by Sprockets audiences.". "Never have we needed peace makers more. There is a peculiar horror in turning on radio or TV for the news and hearing about Christians fighting Moslems, or Catholics fighting Protestants, or Jews fighting Arabs."
