Madeleine L'Engle
Biography By: Beryl "Writing for me is an essential function," Madeleine L'Engle says, "like sleeping and breathing." Madeleine L'Engle was born on November 29, 1918, in New York City. She was named Madeleine L'Engle Camp, Madeleine L'Engle after her grandmother, and she has always written under that name. Her mother, Madeleine Hall Barnett Camp, was a pianist, and her father, Charles Wadsworth Camp, was a writer and journalist. Madeleine herself wrote from a very young age, even though her grades in school sometimes suffered as a result. When Madeleine was twelve the family moved to Europe, living mostly in France and Switzerland. Madeleine went to a Swiss boarding school, where her passion for writing grew. She studied English at Smith College, and graduated in 1941. From there she worked as an actress in the theatre. She had a flexible schedule, so there was a lot of time to write. That was when she wrote her first novel, The Small Rain. When she was in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard , she met the actor Hugh Franklin and married him a year later. Although at first she had success, there was a ten year period when few of Madeleine's books were accepted by publishers. During that time Madeleine, Hugh, their daughter Josephine, and their adopted daughter and son, Maria and Bion, moved to an historic farmhouse in Goshen, Connecticut. To earn a living, they got an old general store, which was eventually a success. Between participating in a very active community and raising three children, it was difficult for Madeleine to find the time to write. But find time she did, mostly at night.

I was born in New York City on a snowy night in November 1918. I lived in New York for the next 12 years. My father, Charles Wadsworth Camp, was a writer, and my mother, Madeleine Hall Barnett Camp, was a pianist, so our house was always full of musicians and theater people. When I was twelve we moved to Europe and I went to a Swiss boarding school. Then, I attended school in South Carolina and went on to Smith College.
After graduating from Smith in 1941, I returned to New York to work in the theater. I wanted to write plays, and I thought the theater was an excellent school for an aspiring playwright. While touring with Uncle Harry, I wrote my first book, The Small Rain , in 1945. During Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard , I met the actor Hugh Franklin, and we were married a year later.
Upon becoming Mrs. Franklin, I gave up the stage in favor of the typewriter. In 1952, Hugh decided to retire from the theater "forever." We moved to an old white farmhouse in northwestern Connecticut and opened a general store. I must admit that participating in the life of a small but active community, running a large farmhouse, and raising three small children were the perfect ways "not" to write a book. But I did manage to write at night. I have written since I could hold a pencil, much less a pen, and writing for me is an essential function, like sleeping and breathing.
A lot of what I learned in our store was of immense value to a writer. Our customers included gypsies, carnival men, farmers, factory workers, artists, and philosophers. I have already published one book written directly out of life there. It's called

Madeleine, Herself Biographical Sketch Timeline How to Contact L'Engle Biographical Sketch Madeleine L'Engle Camp was born on November 29, 1918, in New York City. Her father made his living as a writer. Her mother was an excellent piano player. Madeleine was given over to the care of a nanny and had a strict childhood. She ate with her parents only on Sunday noons and attended private schools. In the spring of 1931, Madeleine and her parents moved to the French Alps. During World War I, Mr. Camp's lungs were badly damaged from mustard gas. It was hoped that the alpine air would benefit his lungs. In the fall, Madeleine was sent to a boarding school in Switzerland. Madeleine and her parents returned to the United States in 1933 in order to care for ? Camps' mother. Madeleine's grandmother lived in a Florida beach home. In the fall of 1933, Madeleine was sent to a boarding school in Charleston, SC. According to L'Engle, this was the first time she was happy in school. Madeleine's father died during the fall of Madeleine's senior year. He had pneumonia which was further complicated by his lung damage.

by Madeleine L'Engle
Author June 27, 1998 What an honor it is for me to be here with you today. I am grateful indeed that you have accepted my books, especially the Murry and Austin books for the Margaret Edwards Award. I want to give you the particular thanks of Polly O'Keefe and Vicky Austin. A few months ago I was at a Master's Tea at Yale University, sitting in a comfortable chair surrounded by a gathering of students, most of whom knew my books and characters as well as if not more than I do. We talked about future plans for some of the characters, and I was able to tell them that Polly O'Keefe is in medical school. A few days later I received a letter from one of the students saying that she was a first year medical student at Yale, and that she and her friends would love to have Polly O'Keefe in their class. I wrote back that Polly would be delighted to be part of their class.

Math Expands: Madeleine L'Engle
Madeleine L'Engle Madeleine L'Engle's creative novels, especially the prize-winning, ever-popular A Wrinkle in Time , have introduced generations of readers to the concept of higher dimensions and the objects like the Tesseract that can be found there. When Meg wants to locate her Father, she has to be open to new ideas that change her conceptions of space and time. Her journeys take her, momentarily, to a two-dimensional planet, and lead her to explore a space of four-dimensions with time as a fifth dimension. Many young women and men have been inspired to learn more about mathematics as a result of this imaginative introduction to the full range of dimensions. For many readers, A Wrinkle in Time provides the first introduction to the Tesseract , a mysterious concept that somehow leads to higher dimensions. You can explore the Tesseract using one of several interactive Java applets.

A Wrinkle in Time and her classic work on faith and art, Walking on Water "Madeleine L’Engle is one of the wise women not only of our time but of the ages. She would be comfortable in the company of Sappho and Sophocles, Dante and Chaucer, MacDonald and Dostoevsky, and they would rejoice in hers. She understands, as they did, that, confronted by the mysteries at the heart of the cosmos–the mysteries of union and separation, of progress and retreat, of good and evil–one must enlist in the struggle with all one’s might and at the same time bow in awe before the unspeakable beauty and pain and all that is inexplicable. " How the Irish Saved Civilization, The Gifts of the Jews, and Desire of the Everlasting Hills
By Madeleine L'Engle In Penguins and Golden Calves , Madeleine L'Engle uses the startling beauty of Antarctica as a backdrop for her discussion of how icons-everyday "windows to God"-reveal to us the glory of our Maker. She also shows how those icons can become idols that cripple us spiritually. With captivating stories and insightful metaphors, L'Engle brings us to a deeper understanding of the God's presence in our lives.

A Wrinkle in Madeleine
While flipping through the latest issue of the New Yorker for the latest cartoons , I was stunned to see a profile on Madeleine L'Engle Madeleine L'Engle. Just like a lot of you, she saved my life. She's also one of the biggest reasons I became a librarian. But after reading the article, I was stunned for a different reason: I wished I'd never read the damn thing. Why? It's a long story: at ten I was fat, geeky, frizzy-haired and miserable . I didn't have many friends, though that was mostly due to meI preferred books to people at the time. People scared me to no end; I could barely talk to anyone outside of my family and even then I was choosy as to what I'd say. To top it off, my sister was so well-adjusted and so well-liked that I pretty much figured my best bet in life would be me living in the attic of my sister's house, peeking at the world through lace curtains (heyI may have been maladjusted, but at least I was entertaining about it). Other than school , my only real contact with the outside world was my weekly visit to the base library . My dad was perversely proud my how many books I checked out each week, but I didn't have the nerve to tell him it was to put as much psychic space possible between reality and me.

Madeleine L'Engle's Story
Taken from Walking Away from Faith by Ruth A. Tucker The Crosswicks Confessions
When I first read the Crosswicks Journals many years ago, I knew I had found in the author a kindred spirit. I marked up the books and made good use of quotes in my teaching and speaking. But now as I have occasion to reread the books, I'm seeing things that I passed right by years ago. Madeleine L'Engle is firstly a mother and secondarily a writer and teacher and speaker (who often gives lectures at Wheaton College and other Christian schools). It was in those capacities and in her perspective on life that I identified with her. But now I discover that she, like me, was also a shopkeeper: she ran a general store with her husband. My store is a gift and garden shop that I have developed with my son. She writes that she, in her "reading Schopenhauer behind the counter, or writing in a journal between customers, must have seemed a very peculiar bird to the people who came in to our store." I too have written in my journal between customers; and she and I are no doubt among a dying breed of shop-keepers who have read Schopenhauer behind the counter.

Biographical Sketch Madeleine L'Engle Camp Franklin, whose pen name is Madeleine L'Engle, was born in New York City on November 29, 1918. When she was twelve years old, L'Engle attended a Swiss boarding school for two years. She completed her preparatory education in South Carolina and went on to receive a Bachelor's degree in English from Smith College in 1941. She attended the New School for Social Research in New York from 1941 to 1942 and did graduate work at Columbia University from 1960 to 1961. L'Engle had an active career in the theater from 1941 to 1947, and hoped someday to become a playwright. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Hugh Franklin, while both were performing in Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. It was also during this period that L'Engle published her first book, The Small Rain During most of the 1950s, L'Engle and her family lived in northwestern Connecticut where her husband operated a small general store and she tried to find time for writing while being a wife and mother of small children as well as part time clerk in the store. During this time, most of L'Engle's manuscripts were rejected and in 1958 she determined to give up writing altogether. She soon found, though, that she could not stop, that she needed to write in order to be happy. Her work began to sell and in 1962 she won the Newbery Award for

A Sampling of Madeleine L'Engle's Poetry I've been terribly surprised that most people have never even heard of Madeleine L'Engle's works other than A Wrinkle in Time . She has written many other books for young adults, adult fiction (that's fiction intended for adults, not pornography!), nonfiction, and several volumes of poetry. Her Crosswicks Journals are very special to me, but the bits of the poetry are easier to share with you. There is a line that haunts me, and I cannot find the source now but I know it was from something Ms. L'Engle wrote. She speaks of reaching out in the dark of night to her sleeping husband, simply to rest her hand upon him in "affirmation of incarnation." The image is so simple, yet so powerful. If you find the source, I'd very much appreciate it if you would let me know

We, who have seen the new moon grow old together,
Who have seen winter rime the fields and stones
As though it would claim earth and water forever,
We who have known the touch of flesh and the shape of bones
Know the old moon stretching its shadows across a whitened field
More beautiful than spring with all its spate of blooms
What passions knowledge of tried flesh still yields
