Stanislaw Lem Science Fiction Author There are six million copies of Lem's novels, short stories and plays in print throughout East Europe and the Soviet Union. Over two dozen of his works have been translated into English. Among the best known are Solaris (1970; the Soviets made a major film from this novel), The Cyberiad (1974; perhaps his best work), The Futurological Congress (1974), and The Star Diaries (1976). Trained to be a physician, and "brought up with the scientific outlook" by his father who was also a physician, he subsequently "spent many hours over coffee arguing about God" with his friend Karol Wojtlya who taught theology in Krackow and who is now better known as Pope John-Paul II. In an interview, Lem indicated his thinking on religion: "for moral reasons I am an atheist for moral reasons. I am of the opinion that you would recognize a creator by his creation, and the world appears to me to be put together in such a painful way that I prefer to believe that it was not created by anyone than to think that somebody created this intentionally."

"Was also willst du tun?" fragte Klapauzius.
"Das ist eine schwierige juristische Frage", sagte Klapauzius, "ich schlage vor, du suchst dir einen guten Anwalt, bevor du irgendetwas unternimmst."
"Wer bist du?" "Ich bin niedergelassener Anwalt und Notar", sagte der Topf in glucksendem Ton, denn durch ein Versehen war etwas zuviel Elektrolyt hineingeraten. Trurl trug die ganze Sache vor, woraufhin der Topf sagte: "Ja, damit er mich nicht vernichten konnte, mehr habe ich wirklich nicht hineinprogrammiert." Trurl bebte vor Zorn. Juris Consilarius "Wie kann ich zu meinem Recht kommen?" Trurl kam diesem Wunsch sogleich nach, woraufhin die Maschine sagte: Danach sprach sie wie folgt: "Der Casus Trurl gab sein Wort und sagte: Trurl ex atomis onundum gemellium Von Entsetzen gepackt platzte ich heraus: Woraufhin der Professor sagte: "Ma ... Malapuzius ... Cha ... oticus, Euer Gnadenlosigkeit ..", stotterte die Knollennase.

"How the World Was Saved"
One day Trurl the constructor put together a machine that could create anything starting with n . When it was ready, he tried it out, ordering it to make needles, then nankeens and negligees, which it did, then nail the lot to narghiles filled with nepenthe and numerous other narcotics. The machine carried out his instructions to the letter. Still not completely sure of its ability, he had it produce, one after the other, nimbuses, noodles, nuclei, neutrons, naptha, noses, nymphs, naiads, and natrium . This last it could not do, and Trurl, considerably irritated, demanded an explanation. "Never heard of it." said the machine. "What? But it's only sodium. You know, the metal, the element..." "Sodium starts with an s , and I work only in n "But in Latin it's natrium "Look, old boy," said the machine, "if I could do everything starting with n in every possible language, I'd be a Machine That Could Do Everything in the Whole Alphabet, since any item you care to mention undoubtedly starts with an n in one foreign language or another. It's not that easy. I can't go beyond what you programmed. So no sodium."

Stanislaw Lem is one of the world's most widely read science fiction writers. His books, all originally published in Polish, have appeared in 30 languages and sold more than 12 million copies. Lem is not a typical science fiction writer, as many unappreciative sci-fi fans will tell you; he is writer addressing profound philosophical issues and telling fantastic tales often compared with Italo Calvino and Jorge Luis Borges. Lem is best known to English readers for his 1961 novel Solaris (English translation 1970), on which Russian film director Andrei Tarkovsky based his epic 1971 film, and for his 1967 collection of robot fables The Cyberiad (English translation 1974). Where do you get your facts? Are you saying that it was easier to live in a bipolar world? Your latest book, Dilemmas (in Polish, DyLEMaty), opens with an essay on Putin after election to his first presidential term. Now he has just been elected to a second term. Are there any additions you feel you ought to make? Bush is seeking reelection. His advisers remembered the effect of the first landing on the Moon, and proposed a repeat, but on a grander scale. So Mars came in handy. It will take at least 20 years to prepare a flight to Mars. Bush, however, is only concerned with the next four years. But the attempt to portray him as a forward-looking pragmatist has produced an impression. There is nothing up there. And what about the money for these space adventures? Do you think U.S. Congress will come up with hundreds of billions on a silver platter? Besides, what is the dollar really worth now? In Communist-era Poland it could buy 100 zlotys: That was some money. But now it is worth a mere 3.5 zlotys. Today I am getting more dollars for new editions of my books from Russia than from the United States. We should deal with earthly problems, not with space chimeras.

On one level, this book chronicles the boyhood of famed Polish writer Stanislaw Lem. But on another level it is also a profound "Coming of Age" tale of not just one man, but of a Civilization. Lem's boyhood takes place just prior to World War II, and as he spins his tales of schoolyard politics, loss of faith in adults and the petty cruelties that young boys sometimes indulge in, it's hard not to see the connection with events unfolding in pre-war Europe; politics just as juvenile, the passing of Faith, the horrible cruelties soon to follow...Haunting and elegant book. A favorite for the bedside Stanislaw Lem's writing is beautiful in this brief work. Fans of his science fiction will surely want to read this to get behind the artifice and learn about the writer. But those who are not familiar with his work will also enjoy this as a meditation on memory, growing up in Poland, and this writer's power to evoke meaning. I read it mostly before falling asleep and it gave me wonderful dreams.
