Corrections A poetry-free presidency The lack of a poet at Bush's Inauguration is a bleak omen of his administration's attitude toward culture but then again, what poet would agree to appear? By David Lehman So Dubya has appointed no poet to deliver an ode at his Inauguration. So what. That was my first reaction to the news: indifference amounting to relief. At least we'll be spared the usual inaugural doggerel. It is easy to write a bad or funny ceremonial poem to mark an occasion of high state. It is difficult to write a good one that is also sincere. And to make the attempt at such short notice and in the aftermath of so nasty a campaign would further lengthen the odds. Not that anyone would give a damn. The nation little noted nor long remembered Miller Williams' effort on behalf of fellow Arkansan Bill Clinton four years ago. So little an impression did James Dickey of Georgia make on Jimmy Carter's big day that I now think that I must have hallucinated that poetic episode, that it didn't happen at all. My second, more considered, response is that the incoming administration can be charged with squandering an opportunity to signal, if only symbolically, some sort of commitment to culture and the arts. It would be a way to mend fences. But then perhaps you need to have a certain kind of president to make that happen. Think of Robert Frost reciting "The Gift Outright" from memory at JFK's Inauguration on Jan. 20, 1961. How remarkable that was, and, in the 40 years since, it has acquired ever greater significance as a sort of cultural statement, a conjunction of poetry and power at the height of the Cold War: the aged Frost reciting a poem affirming America's manifest destiny while the dashing young president exhorted idealists and patriots to ask what they could do for their country.

    HE LAST AVANT-GARDE
is a history of the poets of the "New York School," whose leading members are generally considered to be John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, James Schuyler, and Kenneth Koch. Influenced by French poetry and therefore by what Ashbery has called the "Other Tradition," these poets are innovative yet respectful of traditional form. They are fond of wild juxtapositions and changes of tone but also of lyrical beauty of expression. In style and attitude, they have the "dash" of Byron rather than the sincerity of Wordsworth. Their work ranges from the postmodern discontinuity of Ashbery's The Tennis Court Oath to the romantic formalism of Kenneth Koch's comic epic in ottava rima, The Duplications . They are also attracted to the compositional methods of the French group Oulipo, of which Harry Mathews, a founding editor of the New York School journal

David Lehman to A.R. Ammons That’s always the way of it. No matter where we settle – the most glamorous city, the most stimulating region – we inevitably catch word of folks in some other realm who sound like they’re having more fun. For the second in our series of epistles, New York City’s David Lehman has kindly allowed us to feature one his letters to his friend and MacArthur Foundation “genius” award recipient, A. R. Ammons. David Lehman’s poetry collections include “The Evening Sun,” “Valentine Place,” and “The Daily Mirror: A Journal in Poetry,” all from Scribner. His exploration of the detective genre, “The Perfect Murder,” was nominated for an Edgar Award. He is chief editor of the popular “Best American Poetry” series and teaches at Bennington College, The New School and in the undergraduate honors program at NYU. 21 April 1997 Dear Archie, Thanks for your letter. I love my pied-a-terre, and you will, too! You will have to visit and see it for yourself. It seems cruel that I will have to vacate it so soon: I must fly to Florida on May 9th to be a "master artist" at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach which I hear is lovely & they're paying me & it means I can spend a weekend or two with my Mama in Miami, so I am doing it, though it is yanking me away from this bloody crazy city to which I am as addicted as a junkie to his needle, and now I must find a subtenant for the summer months. In June I spend two weeks teaching at Bennington then return triumphantly to Ithaca on June 25 or so. Will stay until August 15th providing that I can find tenants to live in Valentine Place next year.

Themost interesting part of Mr. Lehman's book is his record of what followed thedismaying discoveries [about de Man]. . . . The ironies grew clear. The discourse so often used to decanonize and de-fame other writers was put to work tocanonize and re-fame the master of deconstruction. More significantly, the vacancies of his theory . . . became a way to pronounce de Man's early writingsundecidable. . . . As writers of fiction know, the point about writing is that it is existentially real, an active mode of discovery through the modalitiesof the imagination. . . . When writers are censored, imprisoned, killed or threatened with death for their writings, this is not because they are the disciples of undecidability. Writing is an act of expressed moral responsibility."— The New York Times Book Review "What David Lehman's outstanding book demonstrates is that one of the most powerful intellectual movements in American universities is morally bankrupt.. . . This book is not only a bag of nails for the coffin of deconstruction but also a hammer and strong arm. Yet deconstruction has already spawned offspring that will survive it. According to Mr Lehman, today's 'politically correct' academics come close to embodying a notion of the literary critic as an agent of the thought police: 'acquiescing in the notion that disinterested inquiry is an impossibility and that every value judgment is necessarily a power play before it is anything else, they make their decisions by applying ideological litmus tests.' Some police force: it cannot even spot wickedness in its own ranks."—

I was about to be mugged by a man with a chain so angry he growled at the Lincoln Center subway station when out of nowhere appeared a tall chubby-faced Hasidic Jew with peyot and a black hat a black coat white shirt with prayer-shawl fringes showing we walked together out of the station and when we got outside and shook hands I noticed he was blind. Goodbye, I said, as giddy as a man waking from an anesthetic in the recovery room
