December 7 David Lehman As I sit at my desk wishing I did not have to edit a book on poetry and painting a subject that fascinates me usually, but today is not as usual, being today, white sky, decent amount of sunlight, forty one degrees in Central Park, and it makes sense to dream of Chicago, another big city with two major league ballclubs, and the pleasure of seeing Paul and you, too, Elaine, whom I never get to see often enough in our own city of the subway series the champagne gallery and the tech wreck on wall street, and as I look out the window almost any minute I expect the brokers to fall from the sky like Icarus in Brughel's painting in Auden's "Musee des Beaux Arts" (and so back to work)

David Lehman Because of an editing error, an obituary for the playwright Kim Chadwick appeared in yesterday's paper. Ms. Chadwick did not die in her home last Thursday. The cause of death was not pneumonia resulting in cardiac arrest. Ms. Chadwick's daughter Esther did not discover the body. Ms. Chadwick had written eleven plays, not eight. She had dropped out of Bryn Mawr, not Smith, taken up with a musician named Pablo, not a shipping tycoon named Tom, and favored quiet meditation and sewing rather than boisterous games of Trivial Pursuit.
from Corrections David Lehman's latest book of poems is "The Daily Mirror" (Scribner, 2000). His previous collections include "Valentine Place" and "Operation Memory." He is also the author of such nonfiction books as "The Last Avant-Garde" (about the New York School of Poets), "The Perfect Murder" (about detective stories and noir movies), and "Signs of the Times" (about an academic scandal for the ages). He initiated "The Best American Poetry" in 1988 and continues as the series editor of this annual anthology. With Star Black he is codirector of the KGB Bar poetry reading series in New York City, where he lives most of the time. Finally he spoke. "Which one of you is David?"
Jim looked at me and I looked at Jim, like a pair
of outfielders who let an easy fly ball drop
between them. Finally I spoke: "Give me the gun."
"Give him the gun," Jim said, trying to sound
as calm as the ship in the painting that had somewhere to get to, as we did not. A ball falls somewhere
and Jim goes in one direction, while in the other David scurries, as the tying run scores, the sound of exultant cheering fills the stadium, and the hapless pair are traded to the American League. "Give him the gun," Jim repeated. The man's hands were shaking. "Drop it." And he did. Poetry had rendered the gun harmless as a drop of rain on the outfield grass in a dream sestina. Somewhere a bell rings, and a little boy playing with his father's gun goes off looking for the nearest Goliath, emulating David. The masked man conceded the pot to Jim, holder of a pair of aces. Finally he spoke: "What's that sound?"

47. Ace Boggess Reviews THE EVENING SUN By David Lehman
TAR s Ace Boggess reviews david lehman s latest book of poety, THE EVENINGSUN. Boggess is Associate Editor of THE ADIRONDACK REVIEW.
http://adirondackreview.homestead.com/review15.html
The Evening Sun by David Lehman Scribner Poetry, 2002 (ISBN 074322552X) What can I say about David Lehman's The Evening Sun not made redundant simply by reading the book? Like its predecessor, The Daily Mirror The Evening Sun is nearly perfect, a remarkable poetic vision of the daily life of the mind. For anyone not familiar with Lehman's poem-a-day project, anyone who has somehow avoided the date-titled poems in all the prestigious literary journals (not to mention online journals like Poetry Daily) where they have appeared, this collection will come as somewhat of a surprise. Dressed up as single-stanza journal entries that read like a foursome of Freud, Jung, Kafka, and Burroughs having a one-up contest by comparing dreams, Lehman's work is everything contemporary poetry is not, but should be (or at least, thanks to his ongoing proof with every poem he writes, everything it could be The Evening Sun runs 159 pages and covers, according to the author's preface, the years 1999 and 2000, with the dates jumbled up and no year attached, making the poems somewhat more universal. Lehman explained in the earlier collection how he often changes dates if two good poems coincide with the same date/title, making another interesting diversion to consider as one reads the poems: were these from '99, '00, or maybe another year altogether? It adds a hint of mystery to a book that already brings its own twists, turns, and red herrings.

It seems a general rule of thumb that if you enjoy the guest editors work, you will enjoy most of their selections. I enjoy Koumunyakaa and his choices for this years best poetry. I especially enjoyed his introduction talking about the lack of content in many poems today. As with most books in this series, there are many familiar names such as Merwin, Williams, Kizer, Levine, Philips, but also some new and hopefully upcoming poets, such as Joy Katz. There are a few September 11th poems, but most of them are readable. This is one of the best in the series that I have read. The Best American Poetry 2003 : Series Editor David Lehman >

"Oh, how glad I am that she
Whom I wanted so badly to want me
Has rejected me! How pleased I am, too, That my Fulbright to India fell through! The job with the big salary and the perks Went to a toad of my acquaintance, a loathsome jerk Instead of me! I deserved it! Yet rather than resent My fate, I praise it: heaven sent It is! For it has given me pain, prophetic pain, Creative pain that giveth and that taketh away again! Pain the premonition of death, mother of beauty, Refinement of all pleasure, relief from duty! Pain you swallow and nurture until it grows Hard like a diamond or blooms like a rose!

The Last Avant-Garde Nonfiction by David Lehman
reviewed by Rachel Barenblat
Let’s dispense with preamble: David Lehman’s The Last Avant-Garde is really good. It’s so good I read it at my desk when I should have been working, and in bed when I should have been sleeping. It made me go out and buy other books. I want to be up-front about this because you’re a busy reader and you probably don’t have enough time to read (who does?), and you need to know that this is a book you should make the time for. The Last Avant-Garde is about the New York School of poets. It’s about New York. It’s about the fifties and about today. It’s about an extraordinary group of painters, writers, poets, critics and hangers-on who, in the words of the flyleaf, "bang[ed] out a powerful new aesthetic." It centers around four friends: John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara, Kenneth Koch, and James Schuyler. "The story of the New York School of poets," the book begins, "is a study in friendship, artistic collaboration, and the bliss of being alive and young at a moment of maximum creative ferment. It is also the story of the last authentic avant-garde movement that we have had in American poetry." If you are a writer, if you have friends, if you are or would like to be creative, how can this opening not draw you in?

If the poetry world were divided into the practice of poetry and the criticism of poetry, David Lehman would be equally well-known in both circles. Critically, he is well-known for his Best American Poetry series, a series which he founded and for which he continues to serve as Editor. In this annual anthology, he and the co-editor, a different distinguished poet each year, select the best from a variety of literary and small magazines. The series has become one of the best read poetry anthologies.
As a poet, Lehman is best known for his poem-a-day project, an experiment which involved writing a poem every day. The extensions of this practice probably extend even to the electronic world, where Poetry Daily has become one of the most visited poetry sites simply by sending out a poem a day, taken from a variety of poets and publications. In writing a poem a day, Lehman is following in the tradition of the New York School, extending the poetic practice of Frank O'Hara and James Schuyler.

an authority on South American politics
and at least one soldier who died in Vietnam
I saw his name on the Vietnam Memorial
and who should phone me on this day but a woman who claims she's married to me and apologizes when I tell her she's not she's a wrong number I shall long cherish I assure her wondering which David Lehman was or is her husband on the first day of school when I was six the principal called my name I stood up and said there were two David Lehmans maybe he didn't mean me but he did it was my lucky day which reminds me of the movie we saw on January 1st Christmas in July with Dick Powell “Is it good luck or bad luck if a black cat crosses your path?”
