Sharon Lee and Steve Miller's Balance of Trade : A New Episode in a Great Space Opera Reviewed by Lisa DuMond 10 May 2004 W hen Balance of Trade was released in October 2003, it's quite likely that only Lee and Miller's most ardent fans read the novel. After all, it was in ebook format (and no one knows better than I what a hard sell that technology is). Moreover, it sent the Liaden series in a new direction that some of its long-time readers might not have been ready for: it expanded the Liaden universe and left behind Shan and Val Con and the other members of Clan Korval, who have enthralled readers since the first novels of the series (now collected together in Partners in Necessity ). But it's time to put aside such concerns and enjoy this glorious new incarnation of Jethri with the wide, fascinating array of new characters expanding an already amazing universe by elaborating its past. Of course, the gorgeous new cover by Donato may be more than enough to draw in new readers. That's the power and impact of Donato's artwork, but there is even more artistry between the covers. As most of the Liaden Universe novels focus on the highest ranking members of the Clans, readers of the series might assume that all members of these families are rich and powerful. It makes perfect sense, then, for a story broadening this universe to focus on the poor Jethri. Not wanted by the most powerful person on his family ship, he's now in deep trouble on the ground that he hates so much.

It's the manuscript of Pilots Choice , the latest entry in Steve Miller and Sharon Lee's Liaden Universe series. Pilots Choice is set on the world of Liad, in a future time where Liadens, Terrans (earth's population) and Yxtrang, the three human races, travel, trade, love and war across the known universe. Customs differ among these races, causing no end of difficulties for the characters we get to know and care about (including giant talking turtles and a sentient tree, Jelaza Kazone ). Because of their perfect mix of plot, characterization and romance, Miller and Lee have created a fascinating, many-layered universe that you won't want to leave when the book ends. If you're a romance reader looking for some variety from the formulaic romances all too prevalent these days, you'll be delighted with the two novels that make up Pilots Choice . If you're a science fiction reader who enjoys a good romance mixed with your space opera, Miller and Lee will satisfy that craving. If you're already a fan, I can guarantee you'll love this book.

Earlier books in the series were Agent of Change Conflict of Honors , and Carpe Diem Scout's Progress Local Custom and I Dare are forthcoming. You're most well known for the Liaden books, written together, but what have you written independently? Steve's seen over a dozen short stories published under his name and a few under pen names; he's been working slowly on a fantasy novel The Grasp of Griffins on the side for the last few years as well. Sharon's written The Tomorrow Log (space opera not in the Liaden Universe), as well as Barnburner and Gunshy (mysteries set in the mythical town of Wimsy, Maine). Sharon's also done some short stories alone her story "The Big Ice" is coming out in Catfantastic V , edited by Andre Norton. When you write together, how does your writing partnership work? Steve does the prepositions and Sharon does the adverbs, and ... no, we didn't think you'd fall for that. A lot of talk goes into a story before either of us touches a keyboard. We spend a lot of time at the kitchen table in the evenings, during long drives, walks, while we're at the grocery store, at 2 a.m. when we should both be decently asleep talking out the plot, the characters, specific scenes, bits of dialog. Sometimes it seems like we do the whole first draft orally.

She holds the dual role of Community Electives Coordinator and HIV and Palliative Care Consultant at the University of Kansas Medical Center Department of Family Medicine. In 1989 she formed the Kansas City HIV Women's Coalition, as well as the Permanency Planning Project of Kansas City, Kan., which, since 1993, has sought to provide services and assistance to AIDS orphans. Dr. Lee also serves on the board of directors of the Black Health Care Coalition, which addresses the health and wellness needs of HIV-positive minorities in the Kansas City area. Dr. Lee has been intimately involved in HIV/AIDS research and patient care since the early years of the epidemic in the U.S. She has served as medical director of a number of Kansas City-area HIV clinics over the past 20 years, and was a founding member of the Kansas City AIDS Research Consortium, which operated from 1988 to 1995. She has won numerous honors for her work, including the Caring Physician's Award in 1999 and the Kansas City, Kansas African-American Unsung Hero in Health Services Award in 1993. Dr. Lee earned her medical degree at the University of Kansas in 1982, and completed her residency in family practice at the University of Missouri's Truman Medical Center in 1987.
