Tales of War
by Lord Dunsany
Tales of War was first published in 1918 and the text is in the public domain. The transcription was done by William McClain A printed version of this book is available from Sattre Press . It includes a new introduction and a photograph of the author. The Prayer of the Men of Daleswood He said: ``There were only twenty houses in Daleswood. A place you would scarcely have heard of. A village up top of the hills. ``When the war came there was no more than thirty men there between sixteen and forty-five. They all went. ``They all kept together; same battalion, same platoon. They was like that in Daleswood. Used to call the hop pickers foreigners, the ones that come from London. They used to go past Daleswood, some of them, every year, on their way down to the hop fields. Foreigners they used to call them. Kept very much to themselves, did the Daleswood people. Big woods all round them. ``Very lucky they was, the Daleswood men. They'd lost no more than five killed and a good sprinkling of wounded. But all the wounded was back again with the platoon. This was up to March when the big offensive started. ``It came very sudden. No bombardment to speak of. Just a burst of Tok Emmas going off all together and lifting the front trench clean out of it; then a barrage behind, and the Boche pouring over in thousands. `Our luck is holding good,' the Daleswood men said, for their trench wasn't getting it at all. But the platoon on their right got it. And it sounded bad too a long way beyond that. No one could be quite sure. But the platoon on their right was getting it: that was sure enough.

Francis Ledwidge (1891-1917)
Behind the Closed Eye
I walk the old frequented ways That wind around the tangled braes, I live again the sunny days Ere I the city knew.
And scenes of old again are born, The woodbine lassoing the thorn, And drooping Ruth-like in the corn The poppies weep the dew.
Above me in their hundred schools The magpies bend their young to rules, And like an apron full of jewels The dewy cobweb swings.
And frisking in the stream below The troutlets make the circles flow, And the hungry crane doth watch them grow As a smoker does his rings.
Above me smokes the little town, With its whitewashed walls and roofs of brown And its octagon spire toned smoothly down As the holy minds within.
And wondrous impudently sweet, Half of him passion, half conceit, The blackbird calls adown the street Like the piper of Hamelin.
I hear him, and I feel the lure Drawing me back to the homely moor, I'll go and close the mountain's door On the city's strife and din.

    http://www.sip.ie/sip019I/led.html
Francis Ledwidge was born in Slane on 19th August, 1887. He left school at fourteen and took up various labouring jobs, but poetry was his first love. At twenty-four, he finally received the acclaim his poetry so richly deserved. He sent his notebook of poems to Lord Dunsany who became his mentor. He had his first volume of fifty poems entitled "Songs of the Field" published in 1915. He fell in love with a local girl Ellie Vaughey but she rejected him for another. His rejection in love, his patriotic nature and his innocence, probably all combined with the poet's spontaneous nature, convinced him to enlist in the Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers. Only he can have known for sure. What is certain however, is that the poet became a soldier and experienced the horrors of World War 1. He wrote two hundred odd poems and only nine mentioned the war in any degree. Of those most describe some isolated moment of beauty that had escaped the carnage of war. He fought in France and was killed at the battle of Ypres on 31st July, 1917. Although buried in Paschendale, his spirit is in Slane. Francis the student.

One year after war began, in 1915, and while serving abroad on active duty Ledwidge saw an initial volume of fifty of his poems published as Songs of the Field . He was much gratified by the favourable press coverage the book received. While recovering wounded in Manchester in 1916 he received news of the Easter Rising in Dublin and the executions of nationalist leaders that followed it. Dejected, in response he wrote his best-known poem in honour of the executed nationalist leader and a close friend, Thomas McDonagh. Despite having survived harsh service in Gallipoli and Serbia, Ledwidge was killed while serving in Flanders, at Boezinge, on 31 July 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres. He was aged 29, and was buried in Passchendaele. Despite the renown of his war poetry, of the two hundred plus poems that he wrote only nine actually discussed the Great War to any extent.

He will not come, and still I wait.
      He whistles at another gate
Where angels listen. Ah I know
He will not come, yet if I go
How shall I know he did not pass
      barefooted in the flowery grass?
The moon leans on one silver horn
Above the silhouettes of morn, And from their nest-sills finches whistle Or stooping pluck the downy thistle. How is the morn so gay and fair Without his whistling in its air? The world is calling, I must go.
