Nevermore singing
Will you go now,
Wearing wild moonlight
On your brow.
The moon's white mood
In your silver mind
Is all forgotten.
Words of wind
From off the hedgerow
After rain, You do not hear them; They are vain. There is a linnet Craves a song, And you returning Before long. Now who will tell her, Who can say On what great errand You are away? You whose kindred Were hills of Meath, Who sang the lane-rose From her sheath, What voice will cry them The grief at dawn Or say to the blackbird You are gone? Francis Ledwidge
Born August 19, 1887 Died July 31, 1917
The Irish poet Francis Ledwidge was born 19 August 1887, at a time when Britain governed Ireland. He was the son of Patrick Ledwidge and Anne Lynch, labourers, and was their eighth child. They lived in a small cottage in Janeville, Slane, and after Patrick suddenly died, Francis had to help his mother labour in the fields of local farmers. When he became older he apprenticed in grocery shops in Drogheda and then Dublin. He left Dublin soon after he arrived, walking 30 miles back to his home in Slane, and started writing his "first poem" the very night he left. He then worked as a road builder and miner. Francis Ledwidge actually first wrote verse on a school slate, and after that he wrote anywhere and everywhere that he could. A piece of stone he wrote on with the charred end of a stick is still in existencein a museum dedicated to him at his cottage home. Eventually, a fellowworker sent one of his poems to a local paper, and it was accepted. After one of his poems was published in The Drogheda Independence , he contributed regularly to the paper. His contributions were accepted and published in several local papers, and he received local praise. Encouraged by this, he sent a notebook of his poems to the famous Lord Dunsany, who liked them and introduced Francis Ledwidge into Dublin's literary world, becoming his mentor and close friend.

Our Cashel family is of Co.Kerry, probably of the Tralee area (since they got together with the Blennerhassett family, most of whom are from the Tralee area). I descend from the Cashel family, who descend from the Blennerhassett family of Ireland, though from what branch is not clear. This is my possible connection to the western family tree. Michael has created a masterpiece in his new CD release titled "Behind the Closed Eye". As he points out in the liner notes, much of this new album is an inspiration by the poetry of Francis Ledwidge. Michael states that " beneath the gentle surface of Ledwidge's work runs a direct line to the ancient nature poets of Ireland, where beautiful, natural imagery conceals a poetic truth ." For those of us unfamiliar with the many great poets of Eire, I have come up with some history on Ledwidge and would like to share it with you all. Hopefully this will give a better insight into the man who helped inspire Michael in composing this new CD. And for those of you who have not had the oppurtunity to hear the new CD yet, by all means, get it. A delightful treat, as usual. The following is an excerpt from the Irish Times in which a story was written on the celebration of Ledwidge's death 80 years ago. The story is titled "An Irishman's Diary" by Tom Farrell: Grocer's apprentice Francis Ledwidge was born outside the village of Slane on August 19th, 1887, the second youngest in a family of four brothers and three sisters born to Anne and Patrick Ledwidge. He left school at 14 and his first recorded poem

    Notes on Life and Works
Born on August 19, 1891, in Slane, Ireland, Francis Ledwidge left school when twelve years old to work on a farm, on the roads, and in the mines. Before he entered World War I in October 1914 in the 5th battalion of the Royal Inniskillings, Ledwidge published verse in the Drogheda Independent . He acted as secretary of a farm workers' union in Meath and then insurance commissioner for Navan county. As early as 1912, Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, Lord Dunsany, had assisted him to get his poetry recognized. Ledwidge brought out his first volume of poems

Updated - Thursday, 7 March, 2002 Francis Ledwidge (1887-1917), the Irish nationalist and poet, was born in Slane on 19 August 1887 the son of a poor labourer. Leaving school at the age of 14 he worked in various manual labour positions while developing a love for and honing his own poetical talents. It was in 1911 that Ledwidge first received notable recognition for his poetry. Having sent a collection of his poems to well-known author Lord Dunsany he received a favourable response, Dunsany assuming the role of mentor to Ledwidge, introducing him to the Dublin literary scene. Although possessing moderate Irish nationalist views Ledwidge nevertheless signed up with the British Army - the Irish Volunteers in October 1914 - to serve in France and Flanders during World War One, on the basis that it was unreasonable to expect others to fight for the freedoms that he would later enjoy. Despite his initial reluctance to enlist he nevertheless argued that his service with the British during World War One was in no way incompatible with his nationalist views: rather, he believed he was furthering the cause of Irish independence from Britain. One year after war began, in 1915, and while serving abroad on active duty Ledwidge saw an initial volume of fifty of his poems published as

An Irish nationalist and poet, Ledwidge was the protégé of Lord Dunsany, to whom he sent a volume of his poetry in 1911. He signed up with the Irish Volunteers to fight with the British in WWI and while serving abroad on active duty a volume of fifty of his poems published as Songs of the Field. While recovering wounded in Manchester in 1916 he received news of the Easter Rising in Dublin and the executions of nationalist leaders that followed it. Dejected, in response he wrote his best?known poem in honor of the executed nationalist leader and a close friend, Thomas McDonagh. He was killed at Flanders in the Battle of Ypres in 1917. The book features two introductions written by Lord Dunsany, Ledwidge's mentor, one to Songs of the Field and the other to Songs of Peace from 1914 and 1916 respectively.
