Profile
The Transmigration of Timothy Leary
By Brian Doherty
An interviewer, on the outside, looking in. After a couple of decades as that saddest of things, a celebrity without portfolio, Timothy Leary has enjoyed a recent spate of media attention for an unfortunate distinction: he is dying of prostate cancer. It has metastasized, he tells me, and causes a severe pain in his left hip. He's been turning up more often than usual in newspaper features and on TV. A biopic is also in the works, possibly to be directed by Leary's friend Tim Robbins. When I first arranged to interview Leary, my intention was to do a simple Q-and-A, to be transcribed and published in Liberty. That's not what happened, for reasons that will become clear. If this had been the feature that Liberty and I had planned, I might have explained in the introduction that in talking to Leary, I was not a disinterested journalist just doing a job. I had long admired the man and his work, ever since first reading his books in my early adolescence. I was talking to one of the heroes of my youth, which undoubtedly blunted any aggressive journalistic edge and contributed to the interview's disappointing results. To me, Leary was a hero not for his associations with psychedelics, but for his eventful life and for the expansive, radically libertarian visions of his '70s books, particularly

timothy leary s LSD research The Experience. It is based on the TibetanBook of the Dead and coauthored by the late timothy leary.
http://www.near-death.com/experiences/lsd02.html
Timothy Leary's LSD research The following is an excerpt from Ralph Metzner's excellent book, The Psychedelic Experience . It is based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead and co-authored by the late Timothy Leary A psychedelic experience is a journey to new realms of consciousness. The scope and content of the experience is limitless, but its characteristic features are the transcendence of verbal concepts, of space-time dimensions, and of the ego or identity. Such experiences of enlarged consciousness can occur in a variety of ways: sensory deprivation, yoga exercises, disciplined meditation, religious or aesthetic ecstasies, or spontaneously. Most recently they have become available to anyone through the ingestion of psychedelic drugs such as LSD, psilocybin, mescaline, DMT , etc. Of course, the drug does not produce the transcendent experience. It merely acts as a chemical key - it opens the mind, frees the nervous system of its ordinary patterns and structures. The nature of the experience depends almost entirely on set and setting. Set denotes the preparation of the individual, including his personality structure and his mood at the time. Setting is physical - the weather, the room's atmosphere; social - feelings of persons present towards one another; and cultural - prevailing views as to what is real. It is for this reason that manuals or guide-books are necessary. Their purpose is to enable a person to understand the new realities of the expanded consciousness, to serve as road maps for new interior territories which modern science has made accessible.

TIMOTHY LEARY Site Map "It must be emphasized that the evolution from fourth-circuit gravity to fifth-circuit levity is much, much more than a struggle between generations. The DNA strategy calls for continuous acceleration of the genetic script, and evolution has never happened faster than at present. The bitterness of the old species grows increasingly paranoid, violent, vengeful." by leary.com Timothy Leary was born on October 22, 1920, in Springfield, Massachusetts. His parents, Timothy Leary Sr. and Abigail Ferris, were both Irish Catholics but came from radically different social scenes: Abigail's side of the family was "traditional, family oriented, suspicious of all things joyous, frivolous or newfangled." They were fiercely moralizing and fanatically religious. In their house "there was a distrust of men and sexuality. I cannot remember one moment of wild merriment." His father's side of the family was "hot, sassy, and very different from my mother's family." The Leary's were "urban, urbane, well-to-do, sexy, fun loving, and self-oriented. For a Leary it was the individual that mattered, and the more dashing the better.

Was Timothy Leary a CIA Agent? Was JFK the "Manchurian Candidate"? Was the Sixties Revolution Really a Government Plot?
Tinker, Tailor, Stoner, Spy
by Mark Riebling
EXT. THE WHITE HOUSE - SUNSET Summer-bachelor Jack Kennedy stands on the Harry Truman balcony overlooking the rose-garden fountain, a soothing sight before him: prisms of lighted water shooting into darkness, the white spike of the Washington Monument, auto headlights flickering along Executive Avenue. He begins to feel a deep-seated goodness within, centered between his chest and throat. From the bedroom behind him, through white chiffon curtains in open french doors, float the chords of a Sinatra song "All I Need is the Girl." With strange clarity, JFK can suddenly make out every note.... Behind the curtains moves the shadow of a tall woman who is not his wife. She is deeply connected to CIA, and has just dispensed to the President of the United States a dose of LSD. In the next few hours she will be "brainwashing" him, and she will be doing so on the directions of a Harvard psychologist, Dr. Timothy Leary, whose colleagues are all taking CIA money, and who has himself designed a personality test used by CIA.... This, or something very much like this, actually happened. To understand how and why it happened requires cruising back a few years, digging through government documents, reading between the lines of Leary's autobiography

Twentieth-Century Neuronaut
Timothy Leary: The Far Gone Interview
by Todd Brendan Fahey I was driving in traffic along West Temple on a hot Summer afternoon, when I felt the marquis outside of the Zephyr Club grinning down at me like some kind of self-satisfied voyeuran unsettling experience that I hoped might finally be one of the "flashbacks" I'd always heard about, but which had never seemed to manifest in my own body chemistry. The sign announced an upcoming visit with none other than Timothy Leary; and having just spent a mad weekend on Ken Kesey's farm the previous month, I wasn't about to trifle with the Lords of Karma: I was riding a lucky streak. I also owned Leary's phone number from a 1990 interview I had done with the Mad Doktor. Leary remembered that phone conversation and agreed immediately to dinner. INTERVIEW (Salt Lake City, Utah, September 28, 1992) Fahey: What have you been doing these days? What's your schedule? Leary: Well, I give about ten to fifteen radio and television interviews and press interviews a week, and I give, oh, five or six performances a month. I'm involved with helping develop methods of electronic communications, which I will demonstrate tonight at the Zephyr Clubbrain activating techniques using electronsand I'm developing computer programs that allow you to design your own hallucinations and to operate your own brain. And I spend most of my time hanging out with the most interesting people in the world, from whom I learn things.
