Black out: sensitive passages are made illegible before release
Timothy Leary, the counter-culture guru of the Sixties, who urged his generation to "tune in, turn on, drop out" informed on friends and helpers in order to get out of jail early. That is the picture that emerges from Federal Bureau of Investigation documents now published on the Internet. Timothy Leary advocated drugs all his life When Timothy Leary died from prostate cancer in 1996 at the age of 76, obituary writers focused on his experimentation with drugs, his counter-culture history, and how Mr Leary chronicled his slow death via the Internet. The former Harvard professor of psychology had preached anti-establishment slogans all his adult life. But after he was jailed on narcotics charges in 1974, Mr Leary began cooperating with FBI agents investigating his 1971 escape from a California prison. He had been helped by members of the radical Weather Underground group to escape from the jail and, after hiding in a series of safe houses, he was smuggled out of the country with the help of a false passport and other fake documents provided by the Weathermen.

Upon entering the California State Prison at Chino, he was administered an intelligence test to determine where he should be placed within the state's prison strata. The test happened to be based on psychological standards that Leary himself had largely authored during his groundbreaking work in the 1950s. He knew how to make it work for him. He checked off all the answers that, in his own words, would make him seem "normal, nonimpulsive, docile, conforming." As a result he was transferred to California Men's Colony - West at San Luis Obispo - a minimum-security prison.

The 'High Priest' of LSD, Harvard professor Dr. Timothy Leary opened the Pandora's Box of the Sixties with his credo of ' Turn on, Tune in, Drop out. ' The establishment so feared Leary's 'children's crusade' that the highest bail in history was set after his arrest for two marijuana cigarettes. Following his daring jail break and escape to exile in Switzerland, Leary returned to the US to become the spokesperson for 'chaos and cyberculture.' Leary, Timothy
Timothy Leary was many things to many people, and in fact he resisted most attempts to categorise himself. He was fond of saying at these times, "you get the Timothy Leary that you deserve." Overall it is accurate to call him a philosopher and a scientist, whose underlying motivations were human communication and understanding the mind.
He lived from 1920 to 1996, and spent most of his adult life working hard to enliven the human spirit and raise the level of social consciousness. Through the 1940s and 1950s he worked as a psychologist, emphasising human interaction. He tried to revolutionise the science, and proposed radical ideas (including the concept of Group Therapy). It took almost 50 years for the APA to recognise his achievements.
When Leary was introduced to psychedelics in1960, he saw the potential for it as a new therepeutic psychiatric, a chemical brain-changer, and set out to explore its effects on the human nervous system. After experimentng on himself and with friends, he took it to the Harvard psychology department where he was employed. Trained as a scientist, he carefully designed and meticulously observed laboratory experiments studying the emotional, physical, and social effects on volunteer grad students. With a healthy stack of positive results and some experience guiding "sessions", he took it to the next level: "curing" criminals in prison.

Two Heads Talking David Byrne in conversation with Timothy Leary
Sorry, I really have no clue of when this "talk" has been recorded. Maddler
    [INTRO]
TIMOTHY LEARY: I was fascinated when you said that when you were young you wanted to be an artist or a scientist. Later you said that both were manipulated by greater powers. What do you mean by that?
DAVID BYRNE: At a certain point I went through a period of being disillusioned. When I was younger in school I had this indoctrinated idea of science being this noble calling_ all just wonderful ideas and great inventions. And the same with art. They both seemed to be in the realm of creation and incredible ideas and exploration. And later on you find out that they're being manipulated by whatever-all kinds of politics-whether it's art politics or government or economic politics or whatever_
TL: I agree. I'm pretty cynical after 71 years of living and 5 years in prison. But I've been shocked to really confront the articulate engineer/philosophers like Prof. Marvin Minsky of MIT who arrogantly flaunt their lust for control and power. Their admitted goal is to reduce human beings to robots. Because machines are efficient. Is that what you were getting at_ that you were running into that disillusionment?
DB: In a way. And also that the kinds of investigations and experimentation wasn't free- flowing. It was directed in some ways and it was subtly nudged in ways that people hoped would produce desired results.

Conceived on 17 January 1920, the second day of Prohibition, at West Point, New York. Born Timothy Francis Leary on 22 October, 1920 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Attended the United States Military Academy at West Point in the early 1940s. Awoken early on a Sunday morning, a hung over Cadet Leary retorted that he was "dying and would never be able to make reveille again in his whole life." As a result, the cadet Honor Committee charged Leary with honor violation and "silenced" him, forbidding other cadets from speaking with Leary. During this period of introspection, Leary was taken in by the first African-American cadets, also silenced due to military racism. He began to study philosophy, and wrote his first book, based on Arthur Schopenhauer Eventually, Leary was urged to resign from the Academy. Thus begins his life-long emphasis as an author to undermine the dominant white-male structures of authority. Following college and military service during WWII, Leary taught in Psychology at UC Berkeley. Then, after his first wife's suicide, moved to teach at Harvard.
