Powered by groups.yahoo.com Why an Edward Lear page? Well, first of all because I like his nonsense very much, and then I wrote my thesis about him several years ago (don't worry, I'm not going to publish it!) so I am supposed to be widely read on the subject... Most important of all, however, is the fact that I haven't been able to find a great deal of Lear's nonsense poetry on the net and I think he deserves his small virtual space as much as his contemporary poetical colleague Lewis Carroll. After all, Lear may be considered the inventor of the term 'snail mail' That's it, if you share the Jumblies' spirit of adventure or your nose is as luminous as the Dong's, if you think there's nothing strange in living in the nest of an owl or your feelings are wrung with compuction

    W. H. Auden,
    Edward Lear
Left by his friend to breakfast alone on the white
Italian shore, his Terrible Demon arose
Over his shoulder; he wept to himself in the night,
A dirty landscape-painter who hated his nose. The legions of cruel inquisitive They
Were so many and big like dogs: he was upset
By Germans and boats; affection was miles away:
But guided by tears he successfully reached his Regret. How prodigiuous the welcome was. Flowers took his hat
    And bore him off to introduce him to the tongs;
The demon's false nose made the table laugh; a cat Soon had him waltzing madly, let him squeeze her hand; Words pushed him to the piano to sing comic songs; And children swarmed to him like settlers. He became a land. [from W.H. Auden, Collected Shorter Poems 1927-1957 London, Faber and Faber, 1966, p. 127.] [Home] [Table of Contents] [About Edward Lear] [Portraits of Lear]

    Edward Lear
Born 12th. May, 1812, London; died 29th. January, 1888, in San Remo, Italy.
British artist, humorist, and traveller. He was the youngest but one of 21 children of Ann and Jeremiah Lear. His father was a stockbroker in Holloway, London. He was educated at home, mainly by his sister Ann. She also helped to coax him out of his bouts of depression. He also has attacks of epilepsy, and throughout his life he suffered from asthma, bronchitis, and poor eyesight. By the age of 15 he was making money from drawing and painting by teaching drawing and selling sketches as well as anatomical studies to medical students. He also worked for a time as draughtsman for the Zoological Society when he illustrated a book about parrots, and he also did the drawings for Tortoises, Terrapins and Turtles for Dr Gray of the British Museum. In 1832 the 13th. Earl of Derby commissioned him to create a collection of drawings of rare birds in the menagerie at Knowsley Hall on Merseyside. The Earl's patronage allowed Edward Lear to travel widely in Italy and Greece, making collections of drawings and oil paintings which he published in several travel books including Sketches of Rome , (1842) and Illustrated Excursions in Italy He entertained the Earl's children with nonsense limericks and other verse which he illustrated with sketches and later published in A Book of Nonsense , (1846) under the pseudonym 'Derry Down Derry'.

The Edward Lear Foundation is a newly-established Disability Arts think-tank.
We have been set up to create new thinking in Disability Arts. In particular, we want to create thinking that is not led by the policy-making of arts funding bodies. We feel that Disability artists should play a key part in this process.
We also intend to create projects that will embody this thinking. Where possible, we shall find new funding sources for these, so that we do not take money away from existing Disability Arts work.
Our first key project is to start the process of preserving and archiving the past achievements of disability arts. We are working closely with Holton Lee in Dorset and with the National Disability Arts Forum on this.
We are currently carrying out a piece of research to discover what disability arts organisations are already doing in this area. First responses indicate that the issue is widely felt to be important.

  • 32. Arthur's Limericks
A collection of humorous five line limericks and verses in the style of edward lear.
    http://limericks.5gl.net/

    Arthur's Limericks
    From bad to verse...
Welcome to Arthur's Limericks The home of five line verses written in Limerick style The original limericks, written by Edward Lear in 1846, were humorous and often ribald. They had a rhythm of 9 - 9 - 6 - 6 - 9 beats to the five lines of the verse. However, an Edward Lear I am not! The limericks on this site differ from the originals in that they don't always rigidly fit this 150 year old rhythm. My verses also do not all pretend to be humorous as I have used my versions of Nursery Rhymes I heard as a child, ( and that was many many years ago), and current news items and present day events as subjects. All I can say is "you never know what my devious mind will think of next", and in paraphrasing some famous words "I am sure that I cannot please all the people all the time". The limericks on this site are but a small selection of the 7,000 - 8,000 verses I have written. Some are joined together to form short stories If you are looking for a limerick on a specific subject that is not covered by this collection then please take a look at my Customized Limerick Writing Service Arthur's Limericks and if used in any electronic form capable of supporting a link, that a link be included to Arthur's Limericks at

    Limerick
