MASCULINITIES AND FEMININITIES CLICK FOR OTHER SAMPLES
Of course there is considerable overlap among these issues, and a teacher may slant this material toward a particular subset of questions. For instance, John Milton's Paradise Lost can be used to debate issues of marital roles, the relation between women and the natural world, sexuality and spirituality, and bonding between men. Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market can be read as a poem about lesbian eroticism, the perils of heterosexual desire and premarital sex, "sisterly" bonding and feminist solidarity, the gothicization of male sexuality, and the feminization of Christ. This collection of text is not a workable syllabus, but a reading list from which instructors might construct their own syllabi. We have deliberately included more material than one could use in a single-term or even a year-long survey, with the understanding that instructors may draw upon the materials in this reading list for a variety of purposes. Nor have we tried to include all possible NAEL readings relevant to issues of gender and sexuality. FROM VOLUME 1 THE MIDDLE AGES The Wife's Lament.

ENG442Y (C18th women and poetry): second term schedule and seminar subjects Schedule and deadlines for second term Weekly themes Detailed list of poems
In second term, you'll be giving two more seminar presentations. The first will be on one of the subjects listed below; the second will be on your work in progress on your research papers
The script of each seminar is due, as always, the Friday after you present. It can be in point form, but please provide a full bibliography of primary and secondary works cited, and please give page numbers for books and articles and line numbers for your poem.
    Subject areas for seminar 3
As before, your seminar should present a focussed, engaging argument, not just a summary of one poem. If you're focussing on one poem or poet, try to contextualize it. Continue to contextualize your ideas in current critical scholarship: the library tour will help you find appropriate articles and books. Possible poems are listed farther down this page.
January 10th Class and gender issues: Mary Leapor and Mary Collier subvert the country house poem and the georgic.
January 17th Women in/on nature: topographical poetry.
