    Introduction
Le Guin is one of the few old masters who is a woman. She specializes in almost poetic epics about people caught in situations that bring out something new in themselves they never would otherwise have discovered. This new thing can almost never be expressed in fewer than 100 words. Le Guin also likes to play with culture shock, and with the interface between people from different backgrounds. Essentially, however, she is an optimist, the flip side of Octavia Butler 's coin.

    "Tales from Earthsea"
So these are reports of my explorations and discoveries: tales from Earthsea for those who have liked or think they might like the place, and who are willing to accept these hypotheses: things change:
authors and wizards are not always to be trusted:
nobody can explain a dragon. - Ursula LeGuin, from the introduction.
I have never read Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea novels. I meant to, my mother has them and has long suggested them to me, but I just never managed to get around to it. I will now. Tales From Earthsea is a set of five short stories and an appendix called "A Description of Earthsea." The stories range from the romantic to the adventurous. "The Finder" tells the story of Otter, who escapes slavery to help start the school of wizardry on Roke island. I found it clever, if sometimes sad, and it does a good job of introducing the readers to the rules of this new world. Hugo nominated "The Bones of the Earth" is a tale of the relationship between apprentice and teacher, and of ultimate sacrifice. I thought this story was wonderful because of the interaction between the talkative Wizard Dulse, who lives a quiet life on the farm, and his graduated apprentice Silence.

    73. Ursula K. Le Guin And Therolinguistics, By Rosaleen Love
le guin, ursula K. The Author of the Acacia Seeds and Other Extracts from the Journal of The Association of Therolinguistics , The Compass Rose.
    http://users.bigpond.net.au/RosaleenLove/leguin.htm
Rosaleen Love URSULA K. LE GUIN AND THEROLINGUISTICS This article was first published in Paradoxa , Volume 4, Number 10, 1998, pp 231-236. We stand on the shoulders of giants, of that there is no doubt, though this phrase is often taken to mean we stand on the shoulders of giant men. In this case, they’d be wrong, for it was Ursula K. Le Guin who singlehandedly created the science of therolinguistics, or the study of the language of animals. In 'The Author of the Acacia Seeds' (1974) she was the first to decipher the language of ants. But just as linguistic, structuralist analyses have been superseded by post-structuralism and postmodernism, so le Guin’s analysis of Ant has had its day. Therolinguistics as a description, however brilliant , of a small group of Ant sentences, is no longer enough. Nor is it the aim of the therolinguistics game to achieve the grand meta-narrative of Ant, in piecing together sentence fragments to spell out even as singular a story as le Guin has told. The move is, as David Harvey has said, towards the 'foregrounding of questions as to how radically different realities may coexist, collide, and interpenetrate' (Harvey 41). This is as true of the study of Ant as it is anything else in this our present condition of post-modernity. Recall that in 'The Author of the Acacia Seeds' le Guin skilfully transliterated 4 Ant passages written in touch-gland exudation on 31 acacia seeds (le Guin 3). From this she deduced that the ant-author was a wingless neuter-female worker, yearning, hopelessly, to be a winged male free to fly off and found a new colony. Since dialects of Ant employ only the third person singular and plural and the first person plural, there was no way, le Guin said, to decide 'whether the passage was intended to be an autobiography or a manifesto' (le Guin 4). Here Le Guin was overly cautious, in my opinion. I would urge her to consider the following: what if the author of the Acacia seeds was innovating in Ant, to the extent of writing simultaneously

Le Guin HarperCollins, 362 pp., $24.95 The Birthday of the World "Science fiction" is the box in which her work is usually placed, but it's an awkward box: it bulges with discards from elsewhere. Into it have been crammed all those stories that don't fit comfortably into the family room of the socially realistic novel or the more formal parlor of historical fiction, or other compartmentalized genres: westerns, gothics, horrors, gothic romances, and the novels of war, crime, and spies. Its subdivisions include science fiction proper (gizmo-riddled and theory-based space travel, time travel, or cybertravel to other worlds, with aliens frequent); science-fiction fantasy (dragons are common; the gizmos are less plausible, and may include wands); and speculative fiction (human society and its possible future forms, which are either much better than what we have now, or much worse). However, the membranes separating these subdivisions are permeable, and osmotic flow from one to another is the norm. The lineage of "science fiction," broadly considered, is very long, and some of its literary ancestors are of the utmost respectability. Alberto Manguel has cataloged many in

    A LEFT-HANDED COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
I want to thank the Mills College Class of '83 for offering me a rare chance: to speak aloud in public in the language of women. Maybe we've had enough words of power and talk about the battle of life. Maybe we need some words of weakness. Instead of saying now that I hope you will all go forth from this ivory tower of college into the Real World and forge a triumphant career or at least help your husband to and keep our country strong and be a success in everything - instead of talking about power, what if I talked like a woman right here in public? It won't sound right. It's going to sound terrible. What if I said what I hope for you is first, if only if you want kids, I hope you have them. Not hordes of them. A couple, enough. I hope they're beautiful. I hope you and they have enough to eat, and a place to be warm and clean in, and friends, and work you like doing. Well, is that what you went to college for? Is that all? What about success? Success is somebody else's failure. Success is the American Dream we can keep dreaming because most people in most places, including thirty million of ourselves, live wide awake in the terrible reality of poverty. No, I do not wish you success. I don't even want to talk about it. I want to talk about failure.
