Ursula Kroeber Le Guin
Ursula K. Le Guin (October 21, 1929 -). U.S. author of fantasy and science fiction works, poetry, and essays. First published in the 1960s, she is now regarded as one of the best science fiction authors and has received several Hugo and Nebula awards. The daughter of anthropologist A.L. Kroeber and writer Theodora Kroeber, Le Guin is noted for her exploration of Taoist, anarchist, feminist, psychological, and sociological themes and for her exemplary style.
Le Guin was born as Ursula Kroeber (the K in her name). Her parents, Alfred and Theodora, were an anthropologist and a short story writer respectively. Her interests manifested themselves early. At the age of 11, she submitted her first story to Astounding Science Fiction (it was not accepted.) She attended Harvard University's Radcliffe college, then Columbia University, graduating with an M.A. She later studied in France, where she met her husband, Charles Le Guin. Her earliest writings (little of which were published at the time, but some of which resurfaced in altered form years later in Orsinian Tales and Malafrena ), were nonfantastic stories of imaginary countries. Searching for a publishable way to express her interests, she re-awakened her interest in science fiction, beginning to publish regularly in the early 1960s. She became notable with the publication of

Ursula K. Le Guin straddles genres and masters them all
By Mark B. Wilson cience fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, poetry and even children's literature all have at least one thing in common: Ursula K. Le Guin. The prolific author and feminist stands tall in several fields. Among the 60-plus books bearing her name are science fiction milestones (including The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness , each of which won both the Hugo and the Nebula awards), fantasy classics (including A Wizard of Earthsea , the first novel in the Earthsea cycle) and beloved children's books (the best known of which are Catwings and its successors). Here, Ms. Le Guin looks back over her long career, talks about her new novel, The Telling , and contemplates the future of speculative fiction. You've written many different kinds of books. How do you feel about the way books are marketed by genre? Le Guin: I have no real objection to marketing and shelving by genre, because people who read a certain type of book want to be able to find it. The problems come with books that are cross-genreand with the critical assumptions that anything they call "genre" is going to be automatically inferior and they don't have to review it or learn how to read it. That's where I get cross and run around orating about it. ... I know that I'm always called "the sci-fi writer." Everybody wants to stick me into that one box, while I really live in several boxes. It's probably hurt the sales of my realistic books like

The Farthest Shore
Covers above are from Bantam books editions published in the late 1970s. Illustrated by Ruth Robbins.
Current editions of these books have different covers.
There are more Earthsea books than this "trilogy". Le Guin has in recent years written more books in the Earthsea cycle. The Earthsea books are classics of high fantasy. Originally marketed for teenagers, these books gained much wider appeal. Set on an archipelago on an ocean world, they involve the Wizard Ged, also called Sparrowhawk, at different points in his life.
A Wizard of Earthsea
Ged is a peasant boy from Gont with a gift of magic. He goes to the School of Wizards on Roke Island. Attempting to prove his superiority with magic he recklessly brings forth a shadow being from the realm of the dead that he must confront. The Tombs of Atuan Ged is encountered years later in an dark, underground labyrinth by the young High Priestess Arha, also called Tenar. She was taken from her family as a girl to become a priestess to the Nameless Ones. Ged is a powerful wizard seeking the missing half of the Ring of Erreth-Akbe, on which is engraved the broken Rune of Peace. She makes him her prisoner, but sees that she is bound by meaningless ritual.

Ursula K. Le Guin Ursula K. Le Guin is famous for her unusual stories and is best known for her four novels, beginning with A Wizard of Earthsea and ending with Tehanu, that are set in the imaginary land of Earthsea.
Le Guin was born in Berkeley, California. Growing up in a stimulating home filled with books and visited by scientists and writers, Le Guin absorbed her parents' interest in the study of different cultures. "My father studied real cultures and I make them upin a way, it's the same thing," she notes.
Le Guin keeps extending her work. Her futuristic novel Always Coming Home includes both poetry and prose, and the book comes with a tape of music.
It has been noted that Le Guin brings to science fiction and fantasy a "new sensitivity" and "a number of striking and sympathetic characters." One critic claims that she "examines, attacks, unbuttons, takes down, and exposes our notions of reality" and does so "in almost unearthly terms."

Le Guin, Ursula K. (b. 1929) Although Ursula Le Guin does not address homosexual issues directly, she includes homosexuals as minor characters in works that cause readers to reexamine their assumptions about sex roles and stereotypes. Le Guin was born October 21, 1929, in Berkeley, California, the daughter of the anthropologist Alfred Kroeber and the writer Theodora Kroeber. She was educated at Radcliffe and Columbia, married the historian Charles Le Guin, and now lives in Portland, Oregon. Sponsor Message.
She has been considered one of the so-called New Wave of science fiction writers who arose in the 1960s, though her work is by no means confined to that genre. Informed partly by her interest in Taoism, her fiction is notable for the purity and directness of its style, for the originality of its concepts, and for its air of solid wisdom. She has won a number of Hugo and Nebula Awards and a National Book Award. Le Guin has written poetry, criticism, several volumes of short stories, and some sixteen novels, but she rarely deals directly with issues of homosexuality. (An exception is the short story "Quoits" in the collection

A Left-Handed Commencement Address by Ursula K. Le Guin
Author Mills College Graduation - 1983 I want to thank the Mills College Class of '83 for offering me a rare chance: to speak aloud in public in the language of women. Maybe we've had enough words of power and talk about the battle of life. Maybe we need some words of weakness. Instead of saying now that I hope you will all go forth from this ivory tower of college into the Real World and forge a triumphant career or at least help your husband to and keep our country strong and be a success in everything - instead of talking about power, what if I talked like a woman right here in public? It won't sound right. It's going to sound terrible. What if I said what I hope for you is first, if only if you want kids, I hope you have them. Not hordes of them. A couple, enough. I hope they're beautiful. I hope you and they have enough to eat, and a place to be warm and clean in, and friends, and work you like doing. Well, is that what you went to college for? Is that all? What about success? Success is somebody else's failure. Success is the American Dream we can keep dreaming because most people in most places, including thirty million of ourselves, live wide awake in the terrible reality of poverty. No, I do not wish you success. I don't even want to talk about it. I want to talk about failure.

    Tehanu:
    The Last Book of Earthsea
    Ursula K. Le Guin
Victor Gollancz 1990 Amazon A book review by Danny Yee Warning: there are spoilers in this review Written some twenty years on, Le Guin's Tehanu is an addition to her classic Earthsea trilogy, albeit with a subtitle which suggests no more will follow. Tehanu is a rather different work, however: the effects of Le Guin's "feminist conversion" are quite obvious here. At one point in A Wizard of Earthsea we read of Ged: "There was a great wish in him to stay here on Gont, and forgoing all wizardry and venture, forgetting all power and horror, to live in peace like any man on the known, dear ground of his home land". In Tehanu Ged achieves this. Having lost all magical power through his exertions in The Farthest Shore , he has been brought back to Gont by the dragon Kalessin. The central protagonist of Tehanu is, however, Tenar. In the twenty five years since The Tombs of Atuan she has married, raised two children and been widowed. In Tehanu she adopts a maltreated and scarred child called Therru and journeys to the side of the dying mage Ogion.
