Review by Aaron Hughes *QUASI-SPOILER WARNING*
This review does not give away the ending or any plot twists of The Telling . It does discuss some of the philosophical issues at the heart of the novel. If you prefer to come to The Telling fresh and have all of LeGuin's thoughts unfold for you as you read the novel, you may prefer to read The Telling first, and then to come back to this review and let me know what you think.

246 pages (right) Science fiction readers have to be delighted that Ursula LeGuin is once again focusing her energies on her Hainish sequence of stories and novels, set in the universe of the Ekumen. She has written several short stories in that universe recently, including the outstanding related novellas collected in Four Ways to Forgiveness , and now The Telling is LeGuin's first full-length Hainish novel in over twenty years.

I own more books by Ursula Le Guin than by any other author (twenty five as of mid-2000). My favourite works are from her "classical" period - the Earthsea trilogy and the science fiction novels The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) and The Dispossessed (1975). I might work up the courage to review the last two one day. Subjects Titles Authors Best Books ...

Insieme come amanti in Kemmer,
Come mani giunte,
Come la meta e la via.

And other stories

For more than four decades, Ursula K. Le Guin has enthralled readers with her imagination, clarity and moral vision; creating a provocative, ever-evolving universe filled with diverse worlds and rich characters: Here, in The Birthday of the World , are eight brilliant short works, including the original novella Paradises Lost , which probe the essence of humanity. Six of the are set in Le Guin’s world of the Ekumen - `my pseudo-coherent universe with holes in the elbows’ as Le Guin describes it; which was made famous in the multi-award-winning classic novel The Left Hand of Darkness . Step into the worlds powered by Le Gun’s extraordinary imagination, and discover complex social interactions and troublesome issues of gender anti sex, loyalty and survival, religion, history and slavery: Discover one of the most remarkable talents writing today.

Cuentos de Terramar
Ursula K. Le Guin
Tales from Earthsea
Trad. Franca Borsani

Le Guin The award-winning creator of mythic worlds, and a master of metaphor, writes about people, animals and trees "nothing that is alien." By Faith L. Justice As a reader, I have a complicated relationship with Ursula Kroeber Le Guin, the writer. It seems she's always one step ahead of me, reflecting my feelings and passions in her fiction. I read the young-adult "Earthsea" books while grappling with adolescent angst. I found my own deeply held social justice convictions explored in her science fiction of the 1970s and '80s. Her collections of short stories were required vacation reading, when I had the leisure to admire her lyrical style and glory in how she puts words together. Le Guin once said, "The writer cannot do it alone. The unread story is not a story; it is little black marks on wood pulp. The reader, reading it, makes it live: a live thing, a story." Given the way her stories have fired my imagination, it's vaguely disappointing to meet Le Guin. She stands a trim 5-foot-4, with white hair and a ready smile. I expect a literary giant to be bigger somehow, to take up more space and oxygen. I expect erudite conversation, but she peppers her speech with "ums," run-on sentences, fragments and common phrases like "Oh, golly!" just like the rest of us.

Question: In The Lathe of Heaven, you portrayed a world in which one person's utopia became another's dystopia. Do you see a parallel between the world you portrayed in 1971 and the world in which we live now, say with regard to the war in Iraq? Was there any event that inspired you to write Lathe of Heaven?

French teacher Did you know? She collaborated with avant garde composer David Bedford on an opera in 1985 - she wrote the libretto for Rigel 9, about a group of astronauts on a strange planet. The twist is, only one of the astronauts can see an alien city. Critical verdict Le Guin has been both prolific and diverse, producing more than 19 novels of science fiction and fantasy, nine volumes of short stories, essays, translations, 13 children's books and poetry. But it is for her science fiction and fantasy that she has received most acclaim, winning six Nebula awards and five Hugos. She created one of the most dazzling and magical epics of the fantasy genre in the Earthsea Quartet and explored complex ideas with moral force and stylistic sophistication in the Hainish suite, which includes The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness. However, her works are vehicles for her evolving views on feminism, environmentalism and utopia and some have been described as "didactic".

From the description I'd read previously and from the blurb on the jacket's inside cover, you would imagine that it was a straightforward novel with a central character and a linear narrative. This is not the case though, rather it is a collection of stories all coherently lead by a central theme and idea. This volume centres on something called, after its inventor, the 'Sita Dulip' method, that allows individuals to move between different planes of existence. The triggering factors required for this enterprise to work are the severe discomfort and irritation produced by air travel. Subsequently, airports are the only places where this type of journey is possible. With this assertion the tone of the collection is firmly established, it is a work that is heavy on dry humour and irony.
