Contact us (please note that we have no contact with the writers and cannot provide contact information) She has put her fist through the window of her apartment. As she pulls her arm back, along with half the window, the shards slice across her wrist and the palm of her hand, simple as a knife slicing through uncooked white chicken meat. The blood begins to fill the gash to the brim, spilling over as she looks down at her hand with detachment. The sound of glass falling fills her ears with wind chimes, the sound of glass spinning in the blue night. Ballerinas of glass cling to her wrist; she plucks them out, lets them fall to the floor. She walks to the bathroom and holds the cut hand under the tap, filling the sink with diluted blood. She smiles to herself - she always smiles when she feels broken and ground-up, with nothing left except a diamond in her chest. A diamond that nobody can pluck out and possess. A diamond beautiful like herself. She knows she is beautiful, because the sure, sharp mirror tells her so.

The days drift by, sultry, dandelion parachutes borne by an unsteady wind. Summer has claimed Vancouver, and I've been recuperating at my Aunt Gayle's. I'm not going to die, because I've decided to shape a book out of this journal and will see to it that it gets flung whole into the bowels of the world. The book that will redeem me, justify my existence.

Always wanting to be a writer she kept a diary which was published as Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid in . The graphic book was a critical and commercial success. Her subsequent volumes of poetry and her first novel confirmed her as one of Canada's great young literary talents. She had a well publicized romance with the older writer W. P. Kinsella , a relationship that ended up with him suing her for libel . She currently lives in Vancouver British Columbia Works:

    Evelyn Lau
Evelyn Yee-Fun Lau was born in Vancouver on July 2, 1971 to Chinese immigrants. The parents were obsessively ambitious on behalf of their children (there is a younger sister), demanding constant top performance at school tests and expecting their eldest daughter, Evelyn, to become a medical doctor. When she reached the age of ten things got even worse as her father became unemployed and withdrew into emotional passivity - "... one of the most traumatic events in my childhood," Evelyn Lau later recalled. She had been closely attached to her father, her source of protection from the neurotic mother. Writing was her means to psychological survival. Lau claims to have been conscious of her urge to become a writer since she was six. In 1983 (age 12) she began publishing poems and short stories in 'little magazines'. Early in 1986 she ran away from her unbearable existence as a social outcast in school and a suppressed, unloved daughter at home. She took up the life of a drug abuser and prostitute in Vancouver - living mostly at social institutions and chronicling in a a diary her psychologically battered life and her struggle as an emerging writer. The manuscript became a bestseller when it was published in 1989 under the title

"When I'm writing I don't think about whether the story is going to be happy or unhappy. That is how I see that particular kind of relationship working out. The logical conclusion, to me. And so, it isn't happy. But I don't know if that'll change. I suppose none of my stories have ever had happy endings. Sometimes ambiguous endings. But I don't set out to write an unhappy story or a happy story." When the camera comes out, it's like a curtain drops. Gone is the engaging woman-child that I've feel I've come to know a little bit over the two-odd hours we've been talking. She has been replaced with the pouting artiste. Is it a pose or just protectiveness? I'm not sure. I only know that it prevents me from sharing her smile with you. And I'm a little sad about that: Evelyn Lau has a wonderful smile.
Lau has a lot to smile about. A difficult beginning has provided generous fodder in a career that thrives on challenges. Lau's first book

Rain slants through the casement window, black stains the brocade wall. Behind the gag, your pink tongue gurgles. I retrieve pins, razors from the debris at my feet like I would stones or shells at the beach. I clip a lock of hair, a nipple. I hold a flame to the candelabra. Open a bottle of resiny wine. I bend to kiss the pulse at your wrist and throat. In The House of Slaves is Evelyn Lau's third book of poetry. Packed with vivid and visceral images, pushing the power of language, Evelyn Lau acts as our guide into a bleak world of sex and power, pain and pleasure. Bold and audacious, Lau continues to explore the terrain of her previous collection, Oedipal Dreams, but dares to go further, into the world of bondage and torture. Lau presents terrifying yet romantic acts of love with brutal honesty. Evelyn Lau was short-listed for the Governor General's Award for Poetry at the age of 21, the youngest person ever nominated for the award. Lau's first book was the bestselling Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid, which has been translated into a number of languages, as have her other books, including Fresh Girls, Other Women and Choose Me. Lau's poetry has appeared in many journals, as well as in Best American Poetry and the definitive Canadian anthology Breathing Fire.
