Maeve Brennan, the librarian colleague of Philip Larkin, who was one of the most enduring and important of his friends and lovers, died on June 11 2003 at the age of 73 in her home town of Hull. A statement from her family said she died in Hull Royal Infirmary after a short illness. It added: " Born in Hull on th September 1929 , Maeve studied for her degree at Hull University and afterwards worked there at the Brynmor Jones Library where she held the post of Sub-Librarian from 1973 to 1985 having held other posts at the library since 1953. " In 1955, Philip Larkin came to Hull to take up the post of Librarian and this was the start of his and Maeve's great friendship. It blossomed into a love affair, aspects of which appear in a number of his poems. Much has been published detailing their relationship and, most importantly, Maeve's own account, The Philip Larkin I K new, was published last year by Manchester University Press. Now, for the first time, both sides of this true friendship can be seen through the interleaving of their private correspondence. "

His perfectionist, pessimistic verse appeared in The Less Deceived (1955), and in the later volumes The Whitsun Weddings (1964) and High Windows (1974), which confirmed him as one of the most powerful and influential of 20th-century English poets. He edited The Oxford Book of 20th-Century English Verse Collected Poems was published in 1988. He also produced two novels, Jill (1946, revised 1964), and A Girl in Winter (1947), and a collection of his writings on music, All What Jazz Born in Coventry, Larkin was educated at Oxford, and from 1955 was librarian at Hull University. His first collection of verse, The North Ship , appeared in 1945, but only after its appearance did he discover the poetry of English writer Thomas Hardy The Less Deceived , was well received, and it was classed with the work of the 1950s Movement poets, with whom Larkin shared a certain quiet tone and absence of rhetoric. After his death, his letters and other writings, which he had instructed should be destroyed, revealed an intolerance and misanthropy (dislike for humankind) not found in his published material.

Obituary
Maeve Brennan
The woman Philip Larkin nearly married, and a profound influence on his work
Jean Hartley
Thursday June 19, 2003
The Guardian

Maeve Brennan, who has died aged 73, was a colleague, close friend and muse of the poet Philip Larkin. I first met her in the early 1960s, when Larkin brought her to tea at our house. Since 1955, when my husband and I, who ran The Marvell Press, had published Philip's book of poems, The Less Deceived, he had become a good friend and a regular visitor. I remember thinking how lucky Philip was to have found a woman who was so pretty, warm-hearted, sensitive and open-minded. Over the years, as we met at parties, dinners, plays and poetry readings, it was clear that Maeve and Philip were very much in love. Maeve was born in Beverley, East Yorkshire, the eldest of three children. Her mother converted to Catholicism when she married Maeve's father, a dental surgeon from Kilkenny, south-east Ireland.

Search Monica Jones Philip Larkin's muse and mistress, over four decades she was an inspiring - if idiosyncratic - university lecturer in English John Sutherland
Guardian Thursday March 15, 2001
By the stern rules of her profession, Monica Jones, who has died aged 78, should perish. An academic for four decades, she published nothing. Yet she merits commemoration on two grounds: she was the career-long companion and aide (occasionally muse) of Britain's most acclaimed postwar poet, Philip Larkin. She was also, in her own idiosyncratic style, an outstanding teacher. Born in Llanelli, an only child, her father was an engineer; her mother was from the north-east of England. When Monica was seven, the Jones family moved to Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire. Her parents (at a period well before the 1944 Education Act) arranged for her to go to the girls' high school at Kidderminster. From there she won a scholarship and went up to St Hugh's College, Oxford, in October 1940, to read English. She was the first member of her immediate family to go to university.

Philip Larkin Aubade
I work all day, and get half-drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain-edges will grow light.
Till then I see what's really always there:
Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,
Making all thought impossible but how
And where and when I shall myself die.
Arid interrogation: yet the dread
Of dying, and being dead,
Flashes afresh to hold and horrify. The mind blanks at the glare. Not in remorse The good not done, the love not given, time Torn off unusednor wretchedly because An only life can take so long to climb Clear of its wrong beginnings, and may never; But at the total emptiness for ever, The sure extinction that we travel to And shall be lost in always. Not to be here, Not to be anywhere, And soon; nothing more terrible, nothing more true. This is a special way of being afraid No trick dispels. Religion used to try

Encyclopedia

Larkin, Philip Larkin, Philip, , English poet. He graduated from St. John's College, Oxford (B.A., 1943; M.A., 1947) and was for many years librarian at the Univ. of Hull. With an eye for the ordinary, Larkin wrote poetry of diminution, quietly exposing the weakness and pretensions of English life. His wit was subtle, delicate, and deadly. Among his volumes of poetry are The North Ship The Less Deceived The Whitsun Weddings (1964), and High Windows (1974). Larkin edited The Oxford Book of Twentieth-Century English Verse (1973). In addition, he published two novels, Jill (1940) and A Girl in Winter (1947); and two collections of critical pieces, (1970) and Required Writing (1983). With the onset of deafness in the 1970s Larkin ceased writing poetry and jazz criticism. Despite a slim body of mature work, Larkin has a secure reputation as one of the finest and most original poets of his era. See studies by L. Kuby (1974) and R. Day (1987); A. PHILIP LARKIN
"Deprivation is for me what daffodils were to Wordsworth." Birthplace

Coventry, England
Education
King Henry VIII school, Coventry; St John's College, Oxford, where he graduated with a first in English.
Other jobs
Librarian, jazz critic Did you know? Kingsley Amis tells the story of an afternoon visit to a reading competition at a boy's school after a pub lunch. Larkin felt unable to leave the stage to go to the bathroom, drunkenly trusting in his thick gabardine coat to soak up a few pints. The trickle of pee emerging from underneath the guest of honour's chair brought proceedings to a halt. Critical verdict Recommended works Larkin's most famous poem, of course, is the grim doggerel of This Be the Verse ("They fuck you up, your Mum and Dad¿"). There's more light and shade, as well as substance, in The Whitsun Weddings and Aubade. Required Writing, a selection of prose pieces written between 1955 and 1982, is also required reading - it includes the best of his reviews, interviews, essays on other writers and introductions to his own work.

They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you. But they were fucked up in their turn By fools in old-style hats and coats, Who half the time were soppy-stern And half at one another's throats. Man hands on misery to man.
