Philip Larkin (1922 - 1985)
Philip Arthur Larkin was born in Coventry on 9 August 1922, the only son and younger child of Sydney and Eva Larkin. His father was City Treasurer of Coventry from 1922 to 1944, and died from cancer in 1948 at the age of 63. His mother lived to be 91 and died on 17 November 1977. The family lived in Coventry between 1922 and 1940. Larkin attended King Henry VIII School there between 1930 and 1940. His early talent as a writer was shown in his regular contributions to The Coventrian, the school magazine, of which he was joint editor between 1939 and 1940. In October 1940 Larkin went to St John's College, Oxford. He failed his army medical as a result of poor eyesight and so was able to complete his degree uninterrupted, graduating with First Class Honours in English in 1943. His close friends at Oxford included Kingsley Amis and Bruce Montgomery, and many of them shared his passion for jazz music. Strongly influenced by, amongst others, Auden, Lawrence and Yeats, Larkin's literary talent developed rapidly. His first poem to be published in a national weekly was 'Ultimatum' in The Listener, 28 November 1940. In June 1943 three of his poems were included in Oxford Poetry 1942-43. For the first few months after graduating Larkin lived with his parents in their new Warwick home, spending much of his time on his first novel, Jill. Two attempts to get into the Civil Service failed and he eventually applied for, and was appointed to, the post of Librarian at Wellington in Shropshire in November 1943. Despite a full-time job and part-time study to qualify as a professional librarian, he continued to write and publish. Ten poems were included in Poetry from Oxford in Wartime in February 1945. All of these were then included in his own

Philip Larkin (1922 - 1985)
The Hermit of Hull. The greatest poet laureate we never had. A miserable old sod. Philip Arthur Larkin was all this, and more.
Born in the English city of Coventry to staunchly middle-class parents (his father was, at the time, City Treasurer), he was educated at the King Henry VIII School before progressing to St. John's College, Oxford, where he earned a first-class honours degree in English in 1943.
He began to publish poetry while at university and while on his first jobs, as a librarian, in the Shropshire town of Wellington, Leicester (University College), and Belfast (Queen's College). During this time he also published his two novels: Jill (1946) and A Girl in Winter
On 21 March 1955, Larkin assumed the helm of the new library at the University of Hull, where he would remain for the rest of his professional life. In October of that year, his literary reputation was sealed with the publication of some 30 of his poems in the Marvell Press collection The Less Deceived.

Modesties
Words as plain as hen-birds' wings
Do not lie,
Do not over-broider things-
Are too shy. Thoughts that shuffle round like pence
Through each reign,
Wear down to their simplest sense,
Yet remain. Weeds are not supposed to grow,
But by degrees
Some achieve a flower, although
No one sees.
Since the majority of me
Since the majority of me
Rejects the majority of you, Debating ends forwith, and we Divide. And sure of what to do We disinfect new blocks of days For our majorities to rent With unshared friends and unwalked ways, But silence too is eloquent: A silence of minorities That, unopposed at last, return Each night with cancelled promises They want renewed. They never learn.
To put one brick upon another
To put one brick upon another, Add a third and then a forth, Leaves no time to wonder whether What you do has any worth. But to sit with bricks around you While the winds of heaven bawl Weighing what you should or can do Leaves no doubt of it at all.

Philip Larkin Aubade
I work all day, and get half-drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain-edges will grow light.
Till then I see what's really always there:
Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,
Making all thought impossible but how
And where and when I shall myself die.
Arid interrogation: yet the dread
Of dying, and being dead,
Flashes afresh to hold and horrify. The mind blanks at the glare. Not in remorse The good not done, the love not given, time Torn off unusednor wretchedly because An only life can take so long to climb Clear of its wrong beginnings, and may never; But at the total emptiness for ever, The sure extinction that we travel to And shall be lost in always. Not to be here, Not to be anywhere, And soon; nothing more terrible, nothing more true. This is a special way of being afraid No trick dispels. Religion used to try

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Philip Arthur Larkin (1922-1985) English poet, novelist, and critic, a leading figure of 'The Movement,' term coined to describe a group of British poets that coalesced during the 1950s, about the same time as the rise of the 'Angry Young Men'. 'The Movement' poets addressed everyday British life in plain, straightforward language and often in traditional forms. It first attracted attention with the publication of the anthology New Lines , edited by Robert Conquest. Among its writers were Philip Larkin, Kingsley Amis , Donald Davie and Thom Gunn. Conquest saw the group's work "free from both mystical and logical compulsions and - like modern philosophy - is empirical in its attitude to all that comes." Larkin's best known books were THE LESS DECEIVED (1955), THE WHITSUN WEDDINGS (1964), and HIGH WINDOWS (1974). "It is not sufficient to say that poetry has lost its audience, and so need no longer consider it: lots of people still read and even buy poetry. More accurately, poetry has lost its old audience, and gained a new one. This has been caused by the consequences of a cunning merger between poet, literary critic and academic critic (three classes now notoriously indistinguishable): it is hardly an exaggeration to say that the poet has gained the happy position wherein he can praise his own poetry in the press and explain it in the class-room, the reader has been bullied into giving up the consumer's power to say 'I don't like this, bring me something different.'"
