The Poems of Aemilia Lanyer: Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum (Women Writers in English 1350-1850) > Customer Review #1: Refreshing Woman Writer of the Renaissance

In Aemilia Lanyers only volume of published poems, SALVE DEUS REX JUDAORUM, this Renaissance author uses beautifully crafted poetry to defend women against prevailing negative female stereotypes of the time. In "Eves Apology," this portion of the poem is spoken from the point of view of Pontius Pilates wife, who is begging for the life of Christ. She explores who really bares the guilt in original sin. She is passionate, yet uses reason in her argument (something women were not thought cabable of doing) and makes her point that any guilt all women may bear in original sin will be far overshadowed by the guilt men, in turn, may bear for Pilates order to execute Christ.

MacDonald, Joyce G. "Review of Aemilia Lanyer: Gender, Genre, and the Canon ." Early Modern Literary Studies http://purl.oclc.org/emls/05-1/macdrev.htm
  • As Marshall Grossman's preface explains, the earliest versions of some of the essays in this first collection entirely dedicated to discussion of the life and work of Aemilia Lanyer (1569?-1645) were included in a session at the 1992 meeting of the Modern Language Association. Her country-house poem, "The Description of Cooke-ham," had first crossed his desk three years earlier as part of a packet of material sent along by a colleague who had served on a university committee charged with developing suggestions for the integration of women into the curriculum. Lanyer's admittance to college classrooms and her emergence as a fit subject for scholarly discourse are important signposts in the ongoing resurgence of interest in and recovery and recirculation of the works of early modern women writers. Indeed, her only surviving work, the long poem, Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum , was the first volume in the lamentably cancelled Oxford paperback series, Women Writers in English, 1350-1850

      AEMELIA LANYER
Aemelia Lanyer was the daughter Baptist Bassano, a court musician who was a native of Venice, and Margaret Johnson.  Her father died when she was just seven years old.  She was left with a small inheritance, which she was to divided with a sister, Angela, upon their mother's death.  A dowry was also put aside for her use upon reaching the age of 21.  Her mother died in 1587. Her father's career as a court musician allowed Lanyer access to the court, which in all likelihood was the source of her education.  Unfortunately, her court connections also got her into trouble insofar as she found herself pregnant by Henry Cary, Lord Hudson, who was  the queen's lord chamberlain.  As a result, Aemelia Bassano quickly and quietly married Alfonso Lanyer, one of the queen's musicians, on October 18, 1592.  Her son was born in 1593 and was christened Henry. Lanyer had an ongoing relationship with astrologer Simon Forman, whose records indicate that he was interested in her sexually.  A portrait of Lanyer can be constructed from his record books.  He portrays her as a strong-minded and attractive young woman with a wart or mole on her neck, who was prone to miscarriage, and who worried about her husband's success. Alfonso died in 1613, leaving Aemelia to fend for herself. After her husband's death, Lanyer founded a school, which lasted from 1617-1619.  Those years are recorded for posterity in a series of litigation between Lanyer and her landlord involving a dispute over rents.

      Lady Anne Clifford
Clifford was the only surviving child of Margaret Russell and George, Earl of Cumberland. When he died in 1605, Clifford's father left the familial properties to his brother. Clifford, with the assistance of her mother, fought tenaciously for her inheritance, finally receiving it in 1643. She was also an active writer, keeping a diary and a family history; however, only the years 1603, 1616-1617, and 1619 of her diary survive. The preservation of these years appears to have been an effort to detail her struggles to obtain her inheritance. Circumstantial evidence suggests that Clifford could have been the writer of "A Chaine of Pearle," a poem memorializing Queen Elizabeth. It is known that her maternal aunt, the Countess of Warwick, was a great favorite of Elizabeth's. Warwick was one of Clifford's chief mentors when she was a young girl, and Clifford counted herself amongst the queen's beloved. In addition, before 1605, much of Clifford's young life was spent at court, suggesting personal experience as a possible source for the details of court scandal recounted in "A Chaine of Pearle." In Progresses and Public Progressions of Queen Elizabeth
