LANIER, SIDNEY Sidney Lanier, poet, critic, and musician, was born in Macon, Georgia, on February 3, 1842, the son of Robert S. and Mary Jane (Anderson) Lanier. He graduated from Oglethorpe College in 1860 and at the outbreak of the Civil War qv joined the Macon Volunteers. He participated in several battles and later served as a scout and in the signal service. He was captured on November 2, 1864, and eventually imprisoned at Point Lookout, Maryland, where hardships and illness led to tuberculosis. After his release in February 1865, he walked home, arriving in Macon on March 15, desperately ill. These experiences are reflected in his antiwar novel Tiger-Lilies (1867) and made the remainder of his life a battle against time, poverty, and ill health. On December 19, 1867, Lanier married Mary Day; the couple had four sons. Lanier practiced law with his father to support his family, and his health grew worse. In 1872 he left his family in Macon and traveled to San Antonio, Texas, via New Orleans, Galveston, Houston, and Austin. He wrote more than 100 letters from Texas, but apparently no poetry. He wrote three short essays: "The Texas Trail in the '70's" (a portion of which was printed under the title "The Mesquit[e] in Texas"), "An Indian Raid in Texas," and "The Mexican Border Troubles." All were published, under the pseudonym Otfall, in the New York World in 1872 and 1873. Lanier's long article "San Antonio de Bexar," with descriptions of places, peoples, and northers, and with historical accounts based on Henderson K. Yoakum'sqv

    by Edwin Mims [American (Southern U.S.) Scholar; 1872-1959. Preface The present volume is a biography of Lanier rather than a critical study
    of his work. So far as possible, I have told the story in his own words,
    or in the words of those who knew him most intimately. If I have erred
    in placing undue emphasis on the early part of his career, it was intentional,
    for that is the part of his life about which least is known
    I have intentionally emphasized his relation to the South, in order to avoid a misconception that he was a detached figure. The bibliographies prepared by Mr. Wills for the "Southern History Association" and by Mr. Callaway for his "Select Poems of Lanier" make one unnecessary for this volume. Of previously published material, I have been greatly indebted to the Memorial by Mr. William Hayes Ward, the fuller sketch by the late Professor W. M. Baskervill, and the volume of letters published by Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons. For new material

    Select Poems of Sidney Lanier Edited by Morgan Callaway To My Father Preface This edition of the `Select Poems of Sidney Lanier' is issued
    in the hope of making his poetry known to wider circles than hitherto,
    especially among the students of our high-schools and colleges.
    To these as to older people, the poems will, it is believed,
    prove an inspiration from the stand-point both of literature and of life. The biographical section of the Introduction rests in the main
    upon Dr. Ward's admirable `Memorial' prefixed to the `Poems of Sidney Lanier'
    edited by his wife, though a few additional facts have been gleaned here and there. For most* of the Bibliography down to 1888 I am indebted to my Hopkins comrade, Dr. Richard E. Burton, now of Hartford, Conn., who compiled one for the `Memorial of Sidney Lanier', published by President Gilman, of the Johns Hopkins University, in 1888. Obligations to other publications about Lanier are in every instance acknowledged in the appropriate place.

    38. Sidney Lanier's Marshes Of Glynn
    Text with modern photograph.
    http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/webspinner/glynn.htm
  • The Marshes of Glynn
    by Sidney Lanier
    Glooms of the live-oaks, beautiful-braided and woven
    With intricate shades of the vines that myriad-cloven
  • Clamber the forks of the multiform boughs,
  • Emerald twilights,
    Virginal shy lights,
  • Wrought of the leaves to allure to the whisper of vows,
    When lovers pace timidly down through the green colonnades
    Of the dim sweet woods, of the dear dark woods,
  • Of the heavenly woods and glades,
  • That run to the radiant margianl sand-beach within
  • The wide sea-marshes of Glynn;
  • Beautiful glooms, soft dusks in the noon-day fire, Wildwood privacies, closets of lone desire, Chamber from chamber parted with wavering arras of leaves, Cells for the passionate pleasure of prayer to the soul that grieves, Pure with a sense of the passing of saints through the wood, Cool for the dutiful weighing of ill with good; O braided dusks of the oak and woven shades of the vine, While the riotous noon-day sun of the June-day long did shine Ye held me fast in your heart and I held you fast in mine;
