The Dante Game
Jane Langton
Review date: 26/3/1999
Publisher: Penguin Homer Kelly, Jane Langton's detective, is more prominent throughout The Dante Game than he was in the other novel by her that I have read. As a professor at Harvard, he is asked to take a course in modern Italian literature at the American School in Florence, basically an establishment catering for American students wanting to spend a year studying in Florence. The American School co-incidentally - and how many times does that word need to be used when describing the plots of crime novels - starts being used as a cover by a group of men plotting to assassinate the Pope, who will be coming to Florence to bless the celebrations of the nine hundredth anniversary of the inauguration of the cathedral there. Kelly, who was a policeman in Boston before he became a professor at Harvard, begins his own investigation when the conspirators begin murdering some of those working for the school who they think may have tumbled to their secret. The assassination attempt, incidentally, is organised by drugs barons appalled by the success of a campaign sponsored by the Pope targeting teenagers. They have convinced the man who will actually pull the trigger that it is part of a campaign by certain cardinals to further a progressive agenda for the Catholic church - the ordination of women, the end of celibacy for the priesthood, abandoning anti-contraception teaching. I have heard this last item used as a justification for declaring the Pope the most evil man on earth - which is a rather extreme view.

Divine Inspiration
Jane Langton
Review date: 24/4/98
Publisher: Penguin This is a rather unusual detective story, featuring a detective who apparently turns up in a whole series of Jane Langton books, ex-policeman Homer Kelly. The plot concerns sabotage of the organ at a church in Boston, Mass., starting with a fire and the simultaneous disappearance of an organist living in an apartment block next to the church. Even though Homer Kelly is the series character, he isn't the hero of the book; that honour goes to the organist who installs a new organ at the church to replace that destroyed in the fire. His interest in the vanished organist and her abandoned baby lead to a wealth of complications over about a year (hence the book's structure based on the liturgical year), well handled by Langton who leaves you guessing until just before the end. The book is illustrated with pictures of Boston and excerpts from the organ chorales of Bach, which fit in with the book's structure and help develop the sense of atmosphere. The Fledgling , by Jane Langton published 1980; paperback 1980, Harper and Row Have you ever wished you could fly? Really fly, not just by using an airplane or other device, but as naturally as a bird does? Georgie Dorian, the young protagonist of Jane Langton’s The Fledgling , has this wish come true when a Canada goose lands on her roof one night and offers to teach her. She soon finds, however, that being granted your dearest wish doesn’t mean that everything will go smoothly. Georgie’s stepfather approves of the Goose Prince, but Georgie’s mother is afraid for her safety; her stepsister and brother worry that she’s going crazy. Their next-door neighbor, the dotty Miss Prawn, is convinced that Georgie is either a saint or a fairy and isn’t sure whether she should be worshiped or exorcised. Miss Prawn’s employer, Mr. Preek, wants to kill Georgie’s Goose Prince out of a mistaken commitment to protect her from the goose’s evil influence. And Georgie herself finds that she is starting to grow up. Will there be a place for a magical Goose Prince in her future? Besides being a well-written coming-of-age story

Story Rating 10.0 out of a possible 10.0 Afseneh writes the following about The Fledgling
This book is about a young girl named Georgie, who has the passion for flying. The "Goose Prince" takes her out every night and teaches her how to fly. But soon a man named Ralph Preek finds out, and will do anything to stop it even kill the "Goose Prince." I think this is a great book. Georgie shows a lot of willingness and courage. I would recommend this book to people who like happy yet sad storys. I give this book a 10!!! recommend this review to a friend

Jane Langton, The Shortest Day: Murder at the Revels (Penguin, 1995) At Winter Solstice, a number of morris dancers are meeting unexpected deaths. No, it's not an Anglophobe's wet dream; it's The Shortest Day: Murder at the Revels . Jane Langton has brought back her familiar cast of New Englanders, headed by modern-day transcendentalist and ex-lawman Homer Kelly and his perceptive wife, Mary. Without revealing too much of the plot, it's worth noting that this is one of those books in which the murderer's identity is fairly obvious from early on; the mystery surrounds how the culprit will be caught and how much more havoc will be wreaked before the capture. This structure may provoke a ho-hum response in those who read mysteries for intricate plots. But for folks like myself, who don't necessarily care whodunit and read more for atmosphere, The Shortest Day is a winner. The book is peppered with quotes from carols, mummers' plays, and other seasonal delights. (If you're a purist who wants to quibble with solstice-time performances of the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, you might also find some of the details distracting.) Other motifs in the book include homelessness and astronomy, both appropriate subjects for the season when a star helped people who found no room at the inn. One thing that often bothers me about Langton's books is the illustrations. Langton's whimsical line drawings of dancers and stately Harvard halls are at odds with the insanities and autopsies of the plot, distracting in a sub-Gorey way. Then again, to enjoy mysteries means one must ignore, or cope with, the idea of death as entertainmentthe same theme found in the St. George play, come to think of it.
