Piers Plowman With hym ther was a PLOWMAN, was his brother, That hadde ylad of dong ful many a fother; A trewe swynkere and a good was he, Lyvynge in pees and parfit charitee. (General Prologue, I.529-32) William Langland, generally thought to be the author of Piers Plowman, was apparently born and raised in the West of England, but he lived in London, which is a principal subject of the early parts of his poem. There is, as a matter of fact, little proof for Langland's existence, and all that is known of him is inferred from supposedly autobiographical statements in the poem (such as the reference to his wife and child at the end of passus XVIII, for which see below). Scholars refer to the author as "Langland" for the sake more of convenience than of accuracy. There is no proof that Chaucer knew Langland or his works, but London was not a large town (about 40 to 50,000 inhabitants) and Langland's work, as shown by the number of surviving manuscripts (over fifty), was very well known in his time. William Langland's The Vision Concerning Piers Plowman The English poet, William Langland (c.1332-c.1400), was probably born at Ledbury in Herefordshire. He became a clerk but having married early, could not take more than minor orders, and possibly earned a poor living by singing in a chantry and by copying legal documents. He lived many years in London in poverty. His famous Vision Concerning Piers Plowman exhibits a moral earnestness and energy which is brightened by his vivid glimpses of the lives of the poorest classes of 14th century England. William Langland's allegorical poem Piers Plowman (not Robert Langland's, as the title alleges) reflects growing concern about the corruption evident in the late medieval Church and the state of the human soul on earth; it also reflected the political and social concerns of northern England in the fourteenth century in the wake of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. Thomas Whitaker (1759-1821), topographer, local historian, and vicar of Blackburn, translated the text for to its local interest and for its didactic content. Site map William Langland Profile Poet; possibly born at Cleobury Mortimer , Shrophire, where there is a plaque in the church porch to this effect, although Ledbury and Colwall , near Great Malvern, make equally strong claims to his birth. Very little is known of Langland's life apart from information contained in The vision concerning Piers the plowman , on which his fame endures. He may have been educated at Malvern Priory and the poem shows knowledge of both religious scriptures and the Malvern Hills. He is thought to have left the district to live in London, ending in poverty. Piers plowman is a lengthy alliterative poem which is extant in three versions (named A, B and C texts) written between 1362 and 1392. The first is the shortest and this is developed and expanded in Version B. Version C has many changes. Through the words of a narrator, called the Dreamer, it tells, with great energy of the search for Christianity and a path to salvation through a series of eleven visions. In the first of these the Dreamer is asleep on the Malvern Hills but has a vision of surveying the people of the world below who are directed by him to travel on a pilgrimage to find truth. The work is second only in importance to Chaucer's Canterbury tales amongst mediaeval literature. It has been widely studied and has provided inspiration for other literature.

It is both a social satire and a vision of the simple Christian life. The poem consists of three dream visions:
