Lamb, Charles
Charles Lamb (right), with Mary Ann, his sister and co-author, illustration from a Scribner publication, 1880 Mary Evans Picture Library (b. Feb. 10, 1775, London, Eng.d. Dec. 27, 1834, Edmonton, Middlesex), English essayist and critic, best-known for his series of miscellaneous "Essays of Elia," but also among the greatest of English letter writers, and a perceptive literary critic. Lamb's father, a scrivener, acted as confidential clerk to Samuel Salt, a bencher of London's Inner Temple. The boy read avidly among Salt's books, and at the age of seven he went to school at Christ's Hospital, where he studied until 1789. He was a near contemporary there of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, with whom he began what was to be a lifelong friendship, and of Leigh Hunt. He was a good scholar and, but for a stutter, would probably have proceeded to holy orders. Instead, he left school just before the age of 15 and in 1792 found employment as a clerk at India House, remaining there until retirement in 1825. In 1796 Lamb's sister, Mary , in a fit of madness (which was to prove recurrent) killed their mother. Lamb reacted with courage and loyalty, taking on himself the burden of looking after Mary, and being rewarded by her affectionate devotion.

    To a River in Which a Child Was Drowned
    S miling river, smiling river,
    On thy bosom sun-beams play;
    Though they're fleeting and retreating,
    Thou hast more deceit than they. In they channel, in thy channel,
    Choked with ooze and grav'lly stones,
    Deep immersed, and unhearsed,
    Lies young Edward's corse: his bones. Ever whitening, ever whitening,
    As thy waves against them dash;
    What thy torrent, in the current,
    Swallow'd, now it helps to wash. As if senseless, as if senseless
    Things had feeling in this case; What so blindly, and unkindly, It destroy'd, it now does grace. Return to top of page

    Lamb, Charles Lamb, Charles, Tales from Shakespeare. Lamb wrote four plays, none of which were successful. However, his dramatic essays, Specimens of English Dramatic Poets (1808), established his reputation as a critic and did much in reviving the popularity of Elizabethan drama. From 1800 on he wrote intermittently for periodicals, the major contribution being the famous Essays of Elia London Magazine, See his Life, Letters and Writings, ed. by P. Fitzgerald (1895, repr. 1971); biography by A. Ainger (1901, repr. 1970); studies by E. Blunden (1954; 1933, repr. 1967). The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,
