The hook is catchy enough. Henry, a Chicago librarian, suffers from a stress-related `temporal affliction' that causes him to be catapulted backwards and forwards through his own lifetime. At age 28 he meets Clare, a stranger who has known older versions of him since she was a child, when a 30-something Henry frequently materialised in a meadow close to her home. Here their relationship begins or, for her, continues... Often reading more like a movie treatment than a piece of literature there's no relish of description at all, and Niffenegger takes glib shortcuts like describing Clare as "a Botticelli by way of John Graham".

When Ms. Lahiri¹s collection of short stories Interpreter of Maladies Stories From Boston, Bengal and Beyond won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, she became the first person of South Asian origin to win an individual prize.
