PULITZER PRIZE WINNER-FICTION
April 12 , 2000
Another of our conversations with winners of this year's Pulitzer prizes in the arts, and once again, to Elizabeth Farnsworth. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: The fiction winner this year was Jhumpa Lahiri for her collection of short stories, "Interpreter of Maladies." Using a variety of characters, Lahiri gives life in these stories to the feelings of alienation, loneliness, and hope that so often mark the immigrant experience. She was born in England in 1967 and raised in Rhode Island. Her parents were born and raised in India. "Interpreter of maladies" is her first book, and the title story also won an O. Henry award. Thank you for being with us, and congratulations. JHUMPA LAHIRI, Pulitzer Prize, Fiction: Thank you. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: Tell us about the title of the book. It's an unusual title, "Interpreter of Maladies." Where does it come from? ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: It occurred to me that you're kind of an interpreter of maladies yourself in these stories.

THE NAMESAKE
October 16, 2003
Jeffrey Brown talks to author Jhumpa Lahiri about her book, "The Namesake."
JEFFREY BROWN: In 2000, the Pulitzer Prize for fiction was awarded to a book of short stories, which is unusual. It was also the first book by the winning author, which is even more unusual. Now that author, Jhumpa Lahiri, has written her first novel, "The Namesake," about two generations of Indians from Calcutta becoming Americans. Jhumpa Lahiri joins me now. Welcome. JHUMPA LAHIRI: Thank you. JEFFREY BROWN: So a young couple comes from India to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and they and their children find themselves somewhat between worlds. JHUMPA LAHIRI: It's what my world is, and what I've always been aware of. My parents came from Calcutta. They arrived in Cambridge, much like the parents in my novel. And I found myself sort of caught between the world of my parents and the world they had left behind and still clung to, and also the world that surrounded me at school and everywhere else, as soon as I set foot out the door. So I've never not been aware of that division in my life, and I wanted to write about that in the book. JEFFREY BROWN: Now, there is of course a great tradition of writing in American literature about the immigrant experience.

Lahiri also worked for a short time teaching creative writing at Boston University and the Rhode Island School of Design ( http://www.saja.org/lahiri.html Newsweek International Lahiri, the daughter of a librarian and school teacher, has always been inclined to creative writing. Lahiri remembers a need to write as early as ten years old and she has always used writing as an outlet for her emotions, "When I learned to read, I felt the need to copy. I started writing ten page 'novels' during recess with my friends' writing allowed me to observe and make sense of things without having to participate. I didn't belong. I looked different and felt like an outsider" (Interview with Vibhuti Patel in Newsweek International At a press conference in Calcutta in January of 2001, Lahiri described this absence of belonging, "No country is my motherland. I always find myself in exile in whichever country I travel to, that's why I was tempted to write something about those living their lives in exile" (

She graduated from Boston University with graduate degrees in English, creative writing, and comparative literature. While completing her Ph.D. in renaissance studies, Lahiri realized her desire to write eclipsed her ambitions to be a scholar. A major fellowship to the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown proved life changing, and helped her to secure an agent, a book deal, and her first published story in The New Yorker . In 2000, Lahiri became the youngest recipient in the history of the Pulitzer Prizes to receive the award in fiction for her first collection of stories, Interpreter of Maladies (1999). Jhumpa Lahiri wins Pulitzer
Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies has been awarded the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The Bengali novelist is perhaps the first Indian to win the prestigious US prize. Also in the final fray were Ha Jin's Waiting and Annie Proulx's Close Range: Wyoming Stories. (Scribner). The 84th annual awards were announced by the Pulitzer Prize board at Columbia University in New York on Monday. Lahiri was born in 1967 in London, and grew up in Rhode Island. She has travelled several times to India. Both her parents were born and raised in that country. Her father is a librarian and mother a teacher. Three of the stories in the award winning book were published in the New Yorker which has recently named her as 'one of the 20 best writers under the age of 40.' The book appeared last year. Her title story has been selected for the O Henry award for the best American short stories. She was a recipient of the Transatlantic Review award from Henfield Foundation and fiction prize from the Louisville Review

A home-coming for Jhumpa Lahiri
Rifat Jawaid in Calcutta It was a home-coming of sorts for Pulitzer award winner Jhumpa Lahiri At a press conference five days ahead of tying the knot to Alberto Bush, Jhumpa answered every question that came her way from Calcutta's journos. She was accompanied by her father, a librarian, and mother, a professor of Bengali in the United States of America at the press conference. Be it a question on her marriage or knowledge of Bengali, Jhumpa replied to all without a tinge of ambiguity. When asked whether she knew her parents' language, Bengali, her answer was, "Yeah, but with too much difficulties." She added, "Truth to tell, I haven't read many books in Indian languages, especially Bengali. However, I have read many literary works of Rabindranath Tagore and Ashapurna Das in Bengali. It's a different matter altogether that it takes quite a lot of time for me to complete their books." On her favourite writer, Jhumpa said that there was no such writer that she could single out, adding that she had read Salman Rushdie's

The Namesake ... The Namesake Get this Book!
Q) In your first book, Interpreter of Maladies , some of the stories are set in India, others in the United States. The Namesake is set predominantly in the United States. Can you talk a bit about the significance of setting in your work? A)
The Namesake is, essentially, a story about life in the United States, so the American setting was always a given. The terrain is very much the terrain of my own life - New England and New York, with Calcutta always hovering in the background. Now that the writing is done I've realized that America is a real presence in the book; the characters must struggle and come to terms with what it means to live here, to be brought up here, to belong and not belong here. Q) The Namesake deals with Indian immigrants in the United States as well as their children. What, in your opinion, distinguishes the experiences of the former from the latter?

"The Namesake"
(Reviewed by Sudheer Apte When Jhumpa Lahiri's short stories first appeared in The New Yorker four years ago, I became among her avid fans. Later, when published as the collection of short stories, The Interpreter of Maladies , they won her the 2000 Pulitzer. The title story was selected for the O. Henry Award and for Best American Short Stories. Therefore her second book and first full-length novel The Namesake must meet extravagant expectations. When I read an extract from
