Spring 2003 As Ever Selected Poems Joanne Kyger Penguin Poets ($20) by Gary Gach his gathering, an overdue celebration, presents an awesome range of poems with a stunning developmental narrative baseline, from Joanne Kyger's discovery of her "voice" on through 40-some years of evolution into one of the leading literary voices of her generation. Naturally, wide recognition's been delayed merely due to an extra X-chromosome (the same reason that Joyce and Pound are still commonly valued over Woolf and Stein), but also contributory may be Kyger's humilitya stance which makes her work all the more endearing. Further reasons that Kyger remains a Poet's Poet, and thus too well-kept a secret: * Hewing to the middle voice.
* Reporting the splendor of mere being.
* Her use of a multi-vocal, intertextual, and sometimes ironic discourse, but referential to an individually lived world, complete with a moral sensibility (like, say, Creeley's), and narrative. Kyger has also remained elusive as to affiliation, though she's been closely associated with Robert Duncan, Jack Spicer, and the San Francisco Renaissance; the Beats; Black Mountain and Charles Olson's projective verse; the New York School (she's born the same month and year as Ted Berrigan); the Bolinas poets; and more recently the Language School. And she's rooted in Pacific Rim culture, with Eurocentricity still dominant in the apparatus of fame (New York as closer to Berlin-Paris-London; California as closer to Mexico, Bali, Australia). Curiously similar to the overall trajectory of W.S. Merwin, Kyger's work begins in a poetics of

T he fact of my camera has by itself created occasions. Nice afternoons when someone calls to say hello. Surprises. It's an opener to people I don't know, know only by their work, will see only when they come through Cambridge/Boston. None of it or little of it would happen if my work didn't exist, if people didn't know it, like it, want to see some of it. The stopping by is random; there isn't any continuity or relationship involved. But it rounds out the edges, makes me feel active; in a way, enlarges the time. T he first and only time I met Joanne Kyger she came over with Peter Warshaw and Sidney Goldfarb. She and Peter had just come back from Puerto Rico, she read a long prose poem from her journal; Peter showed us the slides he had taken of monkeys.

Memoir Strange Big Moon The Japan and India Journals: 1960-1964 by Kyger, Joanne $16.95, 290 pp., ISBN: 1556433379 North Atlantic Books , 10/1/2000 , Paperback Long Description
Published originally in 1981 as Japan and India Journals: 1960-1964, Strange Big Moon is Joanne Kyger’s journal of four full, tumultuous years as a young poet in her late twenties. Hungry to explore Zen and newly married to Gary Snyder, Kyger makes discoveries that will shape a lifetime of poetry. Whether studying under Zen master Ruth Fuller Sasaki or meeting with the 27-year-old Dalai Lama, her journals are witty, amusing, and razor-incisive. A fascinating look at the early poetics of a writer who would come home to create her place as a leading member of the San Francisco Beat Poetry movement. Reviews
A Strange Big Moon is a re-publication of Kyger's journals from that era, capturing her life at a time hwen she was developing both her poetic and spiritual identities. Far from being a book merely "preoccupied with keeping a budget and washing a drip dry dress," as she writes in her introduction, the journals capture the ruminations and perceptions of a young poet at a time when cultural sensibilities were experiencing significant shifts; traveling with rising counter-cultural luminaries provided her with perfect material on which to turn her sharp, perceptive eye. Some of the more stylized writing in the journal foreshadows the narrative strategies of Ron Silliman's New Sentence, Beverly Dahlen's A Reading, or Lyn Hejinian's My Life.

Joanne Kyger and the Tradition of Zen Beatitude
by Kirby Olson Author's Links

In a poem published in the San Francisco poetry journal Bluebook , Kyger writes of a phone conversation with fellow Zen practitioner Philip Whalen:
A Brisk Wind is Blowing Thoughts Clear Through to Phili on the Phone
'The New York Times says I'm a language poet.'
"Well are you?'
'No. Of course not.'
'Are you a beat poet?'
'No. I'm my own poet.'
'George Stanley says you're an Oregon poet.'
'Ha ha.' 'Do you understand what deconstruction is?' 'No.' 'Well, if you don't, I won't bother to try.' May 14, 1999 This short dismissal of poetry affiliations, with its consequent claim of the ability to be one's "own" poet, flies in the face of critical discourse which seeks to define poets in terms of a tradition and practice. And yet, can a poet exist outside of a tradition, outside of a school, with no ancestors, and no hope of being understood from within a common framework of reference, with no fellow poets to correspond, and read with? Kyger's interview in Crooked Cucumber: The Life and Zen Teaching of Shunryu Suzuki , offers an intense biographical list of philosophies, poetries, and fellow seekers in the California scene in the late 1950s and early 1960s, which does much to negate the sense that good poets are ever found who don't consciously work within some tradition. "My own interest in Zen came about because I had been studying Wittgenstein and Heidegger in Santa Barbara.

http://www.jackmagazine.com/issue5/sugreadingasever.html
As Ever As Ever is Joanne Kyger's latest book of poetry. It is edited by Michael Rothenberg, who says, "Joanne's poetry is poetry with an attitude. Immediate, playful, collogquial, and instructional. She lets you know where it's at and how to do it, and when. Now." David Meltzer wrote the introduction. The book is published by Penguin Poets. ISBN: 0-14-200112-0. "Joanne Kyger's poems: musing, sharp-edged, generous. Striking how she can take the most ordinary moment-to-moment-and ground it in depths we all share; then move out to the mystical and devotional and resolve in the magically plain. A superb poetic sensibility effortlessly playing like the shadows passing on a far mountain range: and yet so intimate!"
"Joanne Kyger's poetry is a continuous demonstration of true FREEDOM, on all levels of the world's phenomenal and spiritual realms. Her poems, of any that I know, come the closest to being actual beings-beings endowed with a genuine materiality of thought, feeling, language and humor. They make one glad to be alive."
"If existence is just what happens, can poetry rise to the occasion? Joanne Kyger's poetry is of existence as it happens, moving within earshot, and close-up, under her sharply critical, wildly affectionate glance. It is Kyger's peculiar sorcery to force the issue: a wave of her wand brings actuality into focus, shimmering in syllables newly familiar, momentous, and true."
